Aztec Ships of the Mid Thirties, a Tale of Three Navies

To preface:

The RAN in the mid-30s has basically three cabals of officers running about:

1)  The Mosquito Fleet club.  Due to the Caicos War, and the post-Caicos madness of trying to rebuild a fleet on a budget and quickly, a LOT of GTBs, MTBs, and whatnot were built.  The fact that it was an MTB-A that took out Sublimis while the entire battle fleet didn't take out any Roman Battleships in its death also lent a lot of credence to the maximum torpedoes way of life.  However, the Mayan War really showed the weaknesses inherent, and while there have been no new designs of GTB in a decade, submarines have vastly improved.  Overall this club's political fortunes wax and wane and it will be pushing for a new GTB as well as more submarines as we go into the 30s, possibly with the consolation prize of large MTBs which we can now build.  I've got to get better at designing sub-500 ton ships anyway.

2)  The Aviators.  While fairly young, they have the backing of the Crown Prince which helps quite a bit.  4 carriers, all quite young and relatively modern, the Parthian built seaplane carrier for experimentation, a pair of aviation cruisers in the works, and a steady stream of AP and Seaplane Tenders under construction.  While they'll be pushing for more Strike Carriers like the Constellation, I forsee that they will not be top-billing for tonnage just yet as carriers haven't proven decisive, and in the 30s will be getting escort carrier types and other carrier types, maybe with the first armored carrier coming along.

3)  The Gun Club.  The Battleship Admirals got the oldest units refit already.  And they have the Royal Sovereign in production.  While naturally they'd love to have two or even three of those in the drydocks, for budgetary reasons I see a return to building a smaller battleship.  I don't see any more 24 knotters being built, we have 9 already.  I see more attempts to build out a sub-30,000t 'fully armored battlecruiser' that compromises protection and firepower to keep a 28+ knot speed.

First on the docket of ideas, a carrier to support operations.  While an additional Martinique would give more instant aviation access, the idea of a carrier that can defend itself while also functioning as part of the fleet train, and be a repair depot ship for deployed carrier groups has merit to keep those carriers fully functional longer.  Note that it doesn't carry the full AP/DP 6400t of a seaplane tender, rather she has 20 of her own aircraft, a squadron of fighters and 8 scout bombers, but she does have a full deployment point of resources to maintain aircraft in the field, which would presumably include crated major parts or even crated entire replacement aircraft.

And a 3 year build.  From the perspective of the gun club, there is an interest in having a larger number of fast platforms that can deal with ships like the Byzantine coastal battleships or their somewhat close cousins in the Peoples Republic Navy.  The hard requirement to keep under 27,000t means that armor is insufficient to deal with battleship fire at combat ranges, and the speed is slightly lower than desired but not significantly lower.

A carrier designed to provide decks to escort and support the transport fleet as well as the slow battle line.  While she's very small (near Bogue dimensions but with a shallower draft), she's able to provide 6 scouting torpedo bombers, and a dozen fighters for air coverage.  In light of the great expenses involved in building the Martinique and Constellation class, I see there being a few intervening years in which other things are done that aren't full-up aircraft carriers, and this not only gives flight decks, it gives flight decks to the battle fleet, which frees up the fast carriers to operate as their own task forces.

I've been trying similar-sized ships but my insistence on 32 knots kind of limits everything else about them.

Compared to a Bogue, my ship is a bit finer in her lines and has a lot less range, Bogues have around 20,000nm of range to this ship's 9300nm or so.  However, she's pushing 26kts, which is just enough to give her an appreciable speed edge over the ships she needs to escort, so rather than the 18-20kt crawl of the classic 'escort carrier', she's still reasonably 'fast enough' for that particular job. 

My next fleet carriers will be really fast, but for now, trying to save money.

Incidentally I've been driving myself crazy, trying to make a 500t GTB......basically it's a disaster, and I doubt it's getting any better.

I think that's my problem,  and yes I've looked at yours because you're the only one doing 500t combatants.   

Overall I think it's the low speed that's going to hurt this for me, vice building 6 x 80t MTB for each.

I've basically come to the unfortunate conclusion that I'm just not going to be able to make that ship work.  Not that it's an awful thing, but unless I can get those capabilities for 750t or less, the efficiency loss just isn't worth it vice a bunch of 80t MTB-Hs.  For general patrol work I have the OPV-28 and OPV-33 series that I'm quite happy with, these would have been torpedo-heavy ships mostly for the Caribbean.
