The cost per turn is about the same.  You get a bit more bang for the buck with the bigger ship.

So it's kind of a question of whether you need coverage (smaller hulls) or concentration (bigger hulls) right now.

Certainly you can build Connie iterations that are technically one-offs while still ensuring they're completely inter-operable.  It's an approach I had moved to in the final years at Wesworld.

TacCovert4

My view is that for the first several years there'd be an inertia about the ships.   The martinique mk2 functionally only adds Catapults for emergency launches and a flush flight deck instead of the two level flight deck.  A major design change wouldn't happen until more testing occurred.

I'll probably go with the smaller one, the idea being coverage and time to learn from the constellations.

Who knows, by the time we get around to the next iteration of 'big' carrier, I might be looking at a 27,000 tonner with a 2 level armored hangar.

Distinctly possible you will.  I've gone up to about 24,000 so far but have not like my armored box outcomes.

I concur.  I tried to duplicate the Implacable, and the cost of the armored box is such that the air group was going to be less than 50 aircraft.  On the same tonnage, an unarmored carrier, single hangar, powerful battery with 100t built in for additional AA at a later date if needed, all the bells and whistles, Flag Facilities and Quarters, and even an expanded maintenance shop for the aircraft, etc etc.....72 aircraft in the hangar and tonnage set aside for 8 deck parked aircraft.

What I'm leaning towards in 1932 is a pair of experimental ships.  A Mk2 of the Martinique, with the 'kinks' worked out but a roundly similar airgroup and updates but nothing ground-breaking.  The Constellations will be working up and involved in fleet exercises, so no Mk2 of the Constellations until they've had some sea time.  Instead, only a single Mk2 Martinique will be laid down, concurrent with a 'through deck cruiser' of the Condor Class, which is experimenting with combination ships for providing scouts and fighters for the fleet screen or engaging in independent cruiser operations while having aircraft for self defense or limited strike.  Basically the 16 aircraft flight group could be 16 fighters for the fleet screen CAP....or a split with bombing aircraft as an 'independent aviation cruiser' role.

Unfortunately not.  I've tested the bow all the way up to 8m, and it's still throwing that.  It's just going to be one of the quirks of a combination cruiser, it's going to have some wash problems in heavy seas at high speeds.

And looking back at smaller cruisers for general purpose work.  As a proper deck and belt are a bit beyond the abilities to get it under 6000t with an 8 gun main battery, sufficient secondary, torpedoes, and a scout plane.....I've gone with a 50mm magazine box backing the deck and belt to preclude hits from being catastrophic.  I'll work up a version with a 6 gun battery (a la Arethusa) to see how much more can be crammed on.

If you go with six guns on the original 5,900 t hull, what can you do with the rest of the parameters?

Pulling that turret lets me beef up the armored deck to something functional, and the belt to 90mm, plus heavier armor on the main battery....and a 2nd floatplane scout.  Alternative to the floatplane is adding 3mm to the armored deck.

That's not a bad trade-defence cruiser.  Got the gunnery and armor to take on AMCs and other CLs, couple planes to look for trouble, etc.

I will probably go with one of the 6 gun options.   For cost savings purposes. The improvements in fire control somewhat alleviate the issues with a smaller spotting ladder.  And for general patrol purposes the main battery isn't quite as important.
