QuoteD)  Do I increase the ship's size to about 21200 tons, which is ~3550 tons per HY for 6HY, take the 6 months more of build time and potentially take this ship up to 12 x 240mm guns?

2 set of 2T3x240 allows you to engage 2 targets at the same time.

It's a lot of firepower for its size, but the speed would concern me.  But you probably figured that already.

Speed is a little low.  But there's a lot of the fleet with speeds down there, so as a screen/escort vessel it has utility.  I've trended towards 29-31kt cruisers anyway, the tonnage being burned to get 32kts is killing everything else.

And a quick note.  The Constellation-class Carriers, laid down in 1929, will have their mid-construction automatic refit in early 1931 before they complete in the yards......pulling the deck-mounted 130mm LA-QF guns and 70mm AA guns in favor of deck-mounted 90mm DP guns and 40mm AA guns (not rotary, single guns).  This installation is non-invasive and meets the rules for a mid-construction modification.

And looking at 1932 when the Constellation and Pleides complete, the third ship in the class, tentatively named Hydra.  Notes are that the 30mm AA guns have been stripped in favor of no fewer than 6 of the 'new and hot' Rotary 40mm AA guns (that will prove to be less than the amazing shell hoses they're advertised as) and 5 twin 90mm DP guns on each 'gallery sponson'.  Some of the notable things that are coming out with Aztec carrier design are a 5 squadron airgroup, a 'clean' deck unencumbered by guns with everything above deck being on the single island (this will prove a two edged sword.....nothing on deck to interfere with flight ops, but the entire armament split between two galleries means that against low-level attacks half the AA is completely useless at a time and fore and aft coverage is not amazing).

And finally, this is the 'Through-Deck Cruiser' design, the Condor Class.  Laid down in 1930 and designed originally with 100mm QF Secondaries with 200 RPG.....well before she even launches this will change to the final armament already in development of 90mm DP Secondaries, the 274 rounds per gun is the precise amount per gun to fill the same magazine space without going over.

Yeah, I've gone with the clean deck approach so far.  Not surw if that will last or not.

And for something entirely different, another 'small ice-capable cruiser' for my more extreme-environment territories.  I've only got one ship, the Penguin, capable of operating all-weather off Terra del Fuego.  With the Toucans being scrapped, and my Salado-class not really being designed to deal with ice or other conditions down towards Antarctica, I need another small icebreaker.  Super compact, and a generally functional if light armament, this is a patrol/customs/rescue ship, not a first-line warship.

Unfortunately, I don't have the huge yards and large BP/IC counts to push a lot of classes at once.  So I'm already looking out at 1932 when the Constellations come out of the yards.  I'm considering the option of running singleton classes of Constellation-type 'Strike Carriers'......but also looking at running classes of a Martinique variant that's smaller, more rapidly produced, etc.

For consideration, an updated Martinique.  Benefit, it can be produced in 4HY, is cheaper per HY, and therefore gives me the potential of more hulls in the water.  Downside, the air group is only 36 aircraft, which means a single Attack Squadron if I'm running a defensive fighter heavy airgroup as I expect I'll need to run.
