In a strange way, I'm actually looking at the lighter one as the likely candidate.   Protection isn't far off.  And that's .2bp and $ per turn per ship.  I'm going to wind up preparing a couple alternative options,  1 without the aircraft and more armor....and one without the aircraft and aiming to be even lighter.

I'm also thinking about a reprise of the Salado class, but with 10 x 120mm guns in a dido arrangement.

My issue is continuing production of serious fleet units, escorts, and cruisers simultaneously.

Working from the perspective of making a relatively light but powerful cruiser for its weight, my take on an Atlanta/Dido for consideration as the 1932 Cruiser.....benefit, a lot cheaper.....detriment, the guns will have to win fights by volume rather than individual punch, this is a somewhat different kind of cruiser.

Alternative Design, basically the 'heavy' DD but scaled up somewhat with a floatplane, protection for the guns and such, and the vitals all in an armored box.....a tad on the slow side though, to keep her under 3000t.

Salado's not far off some of my larger sloop ideas, but I don't think of them as cruisers.  Cruiser substitutes, maybe.  She's still got good firepower and margin of speed over old cruisers or AMCs but might have problems with modern cruisers.

Well, the original Salado class was made as colonial station cruisers, so sort of fast sloops.  In that vein I agree, these are more of a powerful sloop.  In that vein I might look at how to shoehorn hydrophones and depth charges onto her.

Going in the direction of a sloop as the 'high' of a 'high-low' patrol/convoy escort mix, I get the following:  Vitals are protected to a degree, there's torpedo/mine protection, 10,000nm range, ASW and Mine Warfare kit and a Floatplane.  Downside, she's 3kts slower than what's become the cruiser standard, and her main battery while useful as DP guns is a bit on the light side for fighting anything besides relatively lightly protected.....though even a heavy cruiser convoy raider could find its cruise cut short if it ate several dozen 120mm rounds in short order.  This would be the larger escort in conjunction with my 5-600t OPVs (Offshore Patrol Vessels).

So, have a question.  I'm refitting the 1922 Uhlan class heavy cruisers to the more modern standards of secbat and whatnot.  The question in particular is the secondaries.  I'm going from a 130mm gun down to a 120mm gun.  So the hoistways I have are plenty big for the purpose, it's just a change of the cradles and a few other maintenance items.  As literally everything else is simply a pierside pull and swap of gun for gun and welding on the catapults for the floatplanes where the Torpedo mounts used to be......can this be considered a refit or do I have to go for the heavy-side Refurbishment?  Basically I'm not seeing where the swap of a couple hundred tons of external equipment, and changing the cradles on the hoist chains and the racks in the magazines (not changing the magazines, just the racks inside them) is going to cost 20% the cost of a 17,000t ship.  There's no engine changes, and no changes to anything that's going to pierce the decks whatsoever.  495 tons per ship in specific, and that's me cutting the secbat's front plate off, and replacing the guts of a 130mm mount with 120mm guns and mounts before welding the plate back on.

At the moment, that's a refurb, yeah.

Which runs me into the problem of what to do.  If I go refurb I might as well go hog wild because an engine swap nets me right at 1.08 comp. I literally don't have enough stuff to drop on the ship to burn that tonnage.

I opted to keep my DP guns as the same caliber/weight as their predecessors to avoid this dilemma.  Wouldn't help with overall ammo loads but that's a different issue.

You could park some more deck armor on Uhlan if you were to re-engine her.  One of the less expensive additions, though I'm not sure what it would do to your seakeeping.

Actually it's why I went to 120mm for dp.   Because it's the same size and weight as my older 130mm

Though if the 130 to 120 is going to require a refurb.....I'll just pull the 130s and use my 90mm surface mounts.  Go with like 18 to 22 guns in 9 to 11 deck mounts instead of 14 in 7 deck and hoist mounts
