Kaiser Kirk

The 1922 refurbishment left the engines in place, but replaced the main guns.
This is a 'light' refit, not touching the secondary battery.
I expect I will do a full refurbishment in a year or two, replacing the engines and will
address the 120mm battery then, probably replacing with 115mm in tiers... !!

Kaiser Kirk

The Kalifern class is a class I like..oddly better than the 20-gun Vazyra even though it has a mere 16 guns.
But the 365L50 is an excellent gun, paired with strong armor and even my first armored magazine.

Anyhow, upgrading the 130 mounts, I researched 1925  130L50 32kg with the HALA mount to replace the old ...1915? 130L50 32kg in the AS mount....and then I decided to research the new 130L47 with 39kg shell.

1931 Basic AA refit upgraded the AA weaponry and added 1930 FC...which with 16x 365L50 is expensive !!

Kalifern
Dropping the Q turret of the prior class, the limited arcs
mean most of the firepower is retained, and with the upgrade
to the 50 caliber gun, they expect nearly the same combat
effectiveness from the smaller ship.
On paper the throwwieght is 91% the same, but with the improvements in sectional density and better arcs, they expect no functional difference.


Deck Guns
Deck guns are echloned outwards, like on Iowa,
allowing 4 to bear ahead (8 guns), or 4 on each side.
The single 90m AA are above them.

Main Belt Armor 
This embraces "all or nothing", but only has 1 deck level unprotected aft and 2 forward.
The main armor deck caps the belt at 1.5m.

Outsloped Wedge shaped Belt
Three steps
1) Figure adjusted height for wedge
2) figure % additional belt height for outsloping
3) apply +% to effective height of wedge.

Step 1
In the VII version, the lower portion of the belt tapers.
The upper 2.5m is a uniform 350mm, extending 0.5m below WL.
the lower 1.5m tapers from 350mm down to 310mm.

Mathwise that means there are 3 sections.

Step 3, applying the outsloping mod to the effective belt height
This is 1.034% more height than the standard 4m non-wedge shaped.
The effective height of the wedge shaped 4m belt is 3.91m of 350mm
So 1.034 * 3.91 = 4.04294m = 4.04

What if I had rounded up?
1.035 * 3.92 = 4.0572 = 4.06

All of which 'saved' only about 80 tons.


Deck Armor
Deck Armored is modeled as two parts
A 35/135/100 main armored deck : 4853 tons
and a 35mm box around the magazines : 133 tons
Which is a total of 4986 tons

To model that, the deck thickness is shown as

Which weighs 4988t

Which means vertical is a 135mm deck with a 35mm splinter box over the magazines.

Like most 'all or nothing' the Forecastle and Quarterdeck sections
are set up as protective decks.

Basic 1931 AA Refit.

The Parthians are unsure of the relative merits of the different AA weapons.
Typically the plan would be to have the 120 OR 90mm,  and then 37 AND 23.

They could do that by removing the 90mm and replacing it with the 37 Quads
but here they decide to keep both 120 and 90
and use the intermediate AAMG - the 30mm.  Which is thought able to do both the 37 and 23 mm roles,
though maybe not as optimal for each.

Vs. high flying bombers a medium artillery piece able to reach 30,000 is thought needed. The 115/120/130mm fill that.

Vs. Torpedo bombers, two bands of attack are expected

The first is barrage by 90/115/120/130 which for a long time I thought of as a curtain of shells, but is really more clusters shells exploding in line ahead of the formation, with overlapping lethal bursts. This means range is far less critical as you are saturating a line of travel.

The second is direct fire by - originally 57mm- 37mm, 30mm, 23mm

The 37 has a longer reach, but slower rate of fire.  Like the OTL USN, the 30mm is viewed as a sufficient caliber to ensure destruction, and fitted with a sensitive fuse. While the 37 is mounted in Quads to compensate for a lower overall ROF, the 30 is mounted in 2-Gun mounts with the expectation the lighter weight will allow it to be trained on mobile threats like the 23mm.

The 23mm has enough shell weight and power to engage torpedo planes just before they drop the torpedo, and the GAST design gives high burst capability, though long duration engagements (which is viewed as unlikely) could be problematic.

Then there's the strafing to suppress AA ...and now dive bomber threat emerging from trials
Originally met by relying on the old Gardner cranked guns for dockside security and boarding actions, then by the 15mm GAST for fortress use - heavy bursts of fire. That has now stepped up to the 23mm GAST...or the more sophisticated 30mm.

Weaponry
The 255mm L 47 gun with the heavy shell was developed to take advantage of new artillery research.

While there had been hopes of fielding a 230mm gun, evaluation of it's penetration at
18km was not entirely satisfactory.  Using 18km as a standard by which cruiser sized hulls
are expected to be visible, and so full FC be effective at some point, the desire is
to start to punch holes in cruisers at that range, though decisive battle range is expected
at 14km.

The L47 has slightly less belt armor penetration compared to an L50, but somewhat better
deck penetration. The belt penetration rapidly improves as ranges close.

Secondary
The 120mm guns allow 6 guns forward/aft and 8 guns on either beam.


Armor :
The main battery has heavier armor than the belt,
reflecting that the belt has the protective deck behind it.

The first true foray into "All or Nothing"

The Protective Deck is from 0.65m down to -1.8m

The belt rises 1.25m over the belt and descends
to 2m for 3m total.

The Belt is from 1.9m to -2.0m
A distance of 3.9, but is inclined 10deg so needs 3.96
(3.9 / cos(10) = 3.960 = 3.96.)

Giving an unarmored freeboard of 4.4m.

The 60mm deck will defeat splinters up to 360mm.

TDS
The vessel is designed for Depth of TDS, which drives the Beam.
With 17.4m across the amidships, and 3.5deep on each side, there is a large volume which
should not be flooded, minimizing list from Torpedo strikes

The 3.5m deep side protection has a 19mm STS bulkhead seperating the compartment
in two, and a 38mm (laminated 2x19mm) bulkhead backing the system.

The compartments are an outer 2m wide, and an inner 1.3m (4.3ft) wide.
The outer filled with oil fuel, the inner with air. This is expected to
minimize list if the outer is breached, as fuel and seawater will be exchanged. The
fuel is expected to disperse and broaden the concussion on the 19mm  bulkhead.
That bulkhead is chosen for maximizing deformation ability and toughness.
While also being splinterproof.

The 38mm (2x19mm) provides a backup which will stop any splinters, but is also
able to deform.

The 1.3m (4.3ft) void space between it and the 19mm will allow Damage control
access for leaks, or counterflooding compartment on the far side of the vessel.

The 'Watcherbird' seaplane cruiser is completing, so might as well get the the final product up to snuff.

These ships are expected to be 1 per cruiser squadron, providing a search function, allowing the carriers to focus on fighters and/or attack. It's actually the IJN concept, which for 1930 makes sense.

Just musing, but I think our view of carrier assets would be different if the hordes of US carriers were not available in WWII, and it was just the Royal Navy carriers the IJN. Actually that could be an interesting 'what if' - a simple Anglo-Japanese Naval war, say sparked from the Sino-Japanese spilling into Hong Kong in 1938..

Kaiser Kirk

The Parthian predreadnaughts are reaching the end of their time with the fleet.
The Turtle class is used for training, while the Rohk and Simurgh
act in support of the Battleships of the territorial fleets.

The 300mm armed Turtle and Rohk can probably kill any armored cruiser, and could be dangerous in night combat, but the Simurgh with the new 333L43 guns is actually dangerous
to most ships out there.

So the first two classes are not prioritized for AA/FC refits, but the Simurgh is.

Refurbished in 1924,
the Simurgh is considered a 2nd rate battleship.
The 4-gun main battery is a limitation that can not be completely overcome,
but with the 333mm guns and thick armor, it is expected to be capable
of engaging all but the newest dreadnaughts with a reasonable expectation of succeeding. Like the Rohk, it is faster than the Byzantine battleline and able to oppose their pocket battleships.

The Royal Nissean IIA, Maelstrom and Ranger classes received their AA refit in 1929, so they only need
the fire control updated to 1930. While they can not fire that distance, this should capture some of the early AA controllers. 

The Moulek class though was not updated in 1929, and so needs the whole kit and kaboodle.

The Tiamat class is due for a refurbishment.

Originally this was planned years ago, and the 390L46 designed as a 2G would fit where the Triple 365L40 is. Since then, a new 390L46 was researched with the 1925 technology and DP (HALA) guns introduced. The new gun has roughly 18% more belt penetration, with 1/3 more deck pen at long ranges.

Converting to Diesel-Electric was considered, but the concept of mixing the fuel used by the main fleet was not viewed well.

The Tiamatlike the rebuilt USS Maryland will have deck DP and casement DP.
That triggers a warning about Casement DP, and I only expect them to be useful vs. torpedo bombers. The Maryland's casements actually splashed at least one. Fellow the next town over wrote a book about his time on the ship.

The cost is higher (as always) than I'd like.
Paying or it will put a dent in my budgets.
Time is 16.99 or 17 months !

Right now without the Tiamats the Home Fleet only has 2x Vazyra, 2x Kalifern - 72 guns

if I add the Expeditionary Fleet, I add 2x Stormbringer & 2x Wirozag - 36 guns

So I think I need these 4 hulls & 40 guns
to fill the line if the Expeditionary fleet is deployed to reinforce the Pacific or Atlantic (30 x 333L43 each) 

I think the rebuilt ship is a tough opponent that can square off against most out there.
The Tiamats will have an IZ of 12km to 27km to its' own guns.

Refurbishment 1932

Designed Pregame, and laid down in 1909.
Pregame, we were not supposed to know what others were building.
Looking to History, the HMS Orion, first of the 13.5" were built in this time period, and orginally the 345L45 was to be the gun for this ship. Desirign to 'Beat' Agincourt for # barrels, instead of 5T2, they were 5T3.  Late in the process, I decided to adopt the 365mm gun for more power, and the combination made them large ships for the day.

Completed in 1912, they were contenders for the most powerful dreadnaughts for a time. That time has long past, and while still formidible, they are worn down and not to current standards.

The original 390L46 was developed as a 2G version would fit in the barbettes of the Triple 365L40.

The new 390mm gun, developed with the 1925 artillery tech, fires a heavier shell, gaining ~10mm penetration over the earlier 390mm.

This replaces the 165mm deck and casements with 130mm firing the new heavy 39kg shell.
The 130mm was originally chosen as 2G would fit 1G 165mm mountings, while the 39kg was chosen as the heaviest practicle single-piece round.

The 130mm deck "DP" is expected to allow engagement against surface threats and aerial threats from high altitude to dive bombers to torpedo bombers.

The 130mm casements are rated "DP" to indicate the are equipped for engaging torpedo bombers as well.

Between the deck and casement 130s,
up to 14x 130mm can bear on broadside.

Kaiser Kirk

The end of 1931 saw the completion of the last of a dozen 12x180 Royal Nissean series cruisers, to form 3 full squadrons, with the Pasbanendag seaplane cruisers being added to each squadron to bolster their fair-weather reconnaissance capability....and allow the final scrapping of the antiquated Mus-Sag converted torpedo-boat carriers.

The new cruiser series being considered is the Pouseki.

While it fields a smaller bore gun - the 165mm than the typical 180mm,
the shell is nearly the same weight (80kg vs 85kg) and is at a higher velocity, giving better belt penetration. Deck penetration drops, but even the 180 does not have great deck penetration, but is thought fairly similar to the Byzantine 191mm in performance.

The power assisted 165mm is also expected to be faster firing than the 180s, with even +1rpm being a benefit.

In the end this is a concept cruiser series.

The concept is that the ships will surge past the expected enemy fleet position, preferably upwind,  hook around and search backwards at daylight, seeking the 'support' vessels - carriers especially,
but also the stores ships, oilers, etc.

The key here is that most ships cruise at 12-15 knots, so if you have sufficient starting overtake speed, you can catch them even if they are faster at top speed.

They can be thwarted by guard ships, or a number of other means, but the Parthians feel that may take more resources than it costs the Parthians, while the Pousekis can also be used in other ways.

Overtake
Conceptually, if steaming at 22knots cruise, and meeting a vessel steaming at 14knots cruise, there would be a +8 knot advantage.

Assuming the ship traveling 14knots was steaming directly away, and immediately went to flank speed when the range was 21km and the mast tops were visible, but not the hull.

A carrier turning to launch, or a ship delaying flank speed, or if the Parthians are charging towards a spot, and they close faster. The same math works for them escaping as well.

Assuming both ships gained 1 knot per 2 minute turn, (aka non-Destroyers), it would take 38 minutes for the 14knot to hit 33knots (if they can) and slowly pull away. 

In that time, the Pouseki would have closed 4.7nm or
7.425km, down to 13.5km. At that range the 165mm can cause a fair amount of damage. With A, B and S1,2,3 &4 bearing, 8 guns firing.

Per our guidelines, under 16.5km the shell splashes can be self-spotted, that is also about the range they will penetrate 100mm belts - and in a stern chase they may have a nearly 90degree angle on the transverse armored bulkheads - which SS calculates as the same thickness as the belts.

A ship moving 34knots would have a 2 knot advantage, and be able to pull away slowly, but would take an hour to reach 17km, and 2 hours to reach 20km. During which time a hail of 165mm hits may adversely effect performance. AP or HE, depending on target, should do a number.

Mission
This ship is meant to be a hunter.

At dusk or in poor weather, a division of 4 will  will start a sweep at 22knots, seeking a way around the enemy battle line, seeking suport ships, tankers, or carriers. The 165mm guns are expected to be effective at closer ranges of night or weather.

The range, to support this plan, is immense, with a 19.0% fuel fraction, which is very high.That is however the upper end of what I find 'reasonable'.

Years ago I simmed empty USN WWII hulls, and came up with the idea that 19% fuel seems about the upper end of what they had. So I use 20% as a limit for my ships.

From 1929.5 to 1931.0 the 165L55 is developed.
I thought I developed the 165L47, but looking at my turnsheets, it was L55.

With 1925 Tech, a 165L55 firing a 67.11 normal or *20% overwieght shell
is possible.  67.11 * 1.2 = 80.53kg as maximum shell weight.
Parthia considers 80-90kg the maximum reasonable handloading,
and a 165 firing a 80kg seems more compact than a 180L45,
and has better sectional density. 

Power assist for loading/ramming/training  is provided (10% main armanent weight), like the British 7.5".

Kaiser Kirk

I have been posting conceptual Coast or Light battleships off and on since I scrapped the Gatekeeper & Keymaster CBB class that guarded the Straits of Hormuz from the shallows of Khasab,

The old refurbished Armored Cruisers and Predreads mostly run at 23-24 knots and that fast enough to at least not easily be caught by Byzantine battleships- though their speed keeps increasing.

The class somewhat assumes that the opponent will be faster, and will choose a longer range, but it overall is reasonably armored for it's size.

The 333L43 are capable guns, and with 8 barrels can maintain spotting. Based on how the IJN were building their ships, they should be very good against those, but also capable against the various pre-dread style ships the Byzantines field. Though these probably would not face those, but they might face Mayan ships...or deter them.

The Rustam and Sparabara classes of ACs, the Tortoise Class of PB - they are all getting scrapped soon regardless of if I've built replacements. 

The Rohk class will probably stay in service as a training platform, but could be scrapped. The double-casement monsters would be scary to a cruiser, but that's about all.

The Simurgh, with the 4x 333L43 will stay in service a while - I think it has a good chance of beating a IJN BC, so can serve in a defender role. 

But if I can find the BP to build this, I can replace that as well, move it to training and scrap the Rohk.

Given the Parthian-Aztec alignment in 1930, well at least a limited alignment, these also make a lot of sense.  The 3 Implacable-class BBs that the Sultanate has refit are also 24kts with similar armor profiles, though 10 x 280 rather than 8 x 333.  A couple of these in the Caribbean or West Coast areas would match up well with the Implacables as a 2nd line battle-squadron, or even be able to fall in line with the Monarchs, Majestics, or Victories for battle line service, even if their protection is a bit lacking to stand fully with their 27,000t cousins.

The old refurbished Armored Cruisers and Predreads mostly run at 23-24 knots and that fast enough to at least not easily be caught by Byzantine battleships- though their speed keeps increasing.

The class somewhat assumes that the opponent will be faster, and will choose a longer range, but it overall is reasonably armored for it's size.

The 333L43 are capable guns, and with 8 barrels can maintain spotting. Based on how the IJN were building their ships, they should be very good against those, but also capable against the various pre-dread style ships the Byzantines field. Though these probably would not face those, but they might face Mayan ships...or deter them.
