Rather than lay down a second armored cruiser in 1928 to make a class of two for the program, there is an alternative proposal to build another aircraft carrier. In effect a stretched Cardinal Richelieu built atop the relative hull form of AC-26, the design can accommodate fifty-seven aircraft [Reduced to forty-eight post-1933, its calculated Airgroup at 4560t] while being fast enough to keep up with the battleships and armored cruisers in a sprint. Its value is seen as providing mobile fighter cover to the battlefleet, rather than as a strike asset.

The Rock Doctor

I can see why Rome might be tempted to go with something like that.

Jefgte

Just 9 m above the sea. This may be a little low for a 215m and 18700t AC.

The Rock Doctor

I've understood the 9m to be the hanger floor, meaning the flight deck level is another 5.5 metres above that...

TacCovert4

I get it.  9m is a bit low on the freeboard.   But it would account for the hangar and flight deck.  In service the ship might find the flight deck to get wet in a head sea.

So yes, for a single hanger carrier we use 9m.

Carriers are like destroyers...the darned things don't sim well. :)

So that isn't meant to be the "reality' necessarily.

The 9m and 12m heights on carriers are meant to sim the superstructure material involved in the hanger, the elevators, etc.
Using those numbers seemed to make the ships sim out similar to the historic ones.

But obviously the 3m height difference between the 9m single and 12m double isn't enough to fit another hanger level.

I suspect in "reality" we should be looking at the real hanger heights being about +3m/hanger level or about 6m.

So about 6m hangers at 12m and then 18m.
Maybe even a 2.5m deck in between the upper hanger and the flight deck. So 14.5 and 20.5m.

Did they play the fife lowly,

Looking at some upcoming refits, the Pilum class destroyers seem to be a good testbed for the upcoming 90mm DP mounts. They receive a complete armament refresh, as well as reallocation of miscellaneous weight. Also preview of a designation change that I'll post when its fully baked.

The Isca class cruisers are due for an Anti-Aircraft battery refresh. This refit replaces the torpedoes and old 100mm guns with a modern battery of 57mm and 28mm guns. Due to the extremely tight build of these ships, they are unable to carry the same ammunition loads as more modern ships. The refit also adds a single catapult with accompanying armed recon plane.

And now for more Destroyers. The Rainier Marion's are the oldest "modern" destroyers and the genisis of the current line of Heavy Destroyers. While the reclassification is going to alter how they are described, they are in need of an update. This sees the replacement of the long 140mmL55 with the L40 version found on more modern examples. Additionally, they receive additional AA guns, and a quadruple 610mm torpedo launcher in place of the old 530mm fish.

More Refits, this time another battleship. The Totanis class is being taken in hand for a Secondary Battery Modernization. One of the ships with a combination of 140mm and 100mm guns in a anti-light ships setup, the configuration has been found to be less than reliable due to the sheer amount of shell splashes. Totanis is being taken in hand first as the other classes with this heavy secondary setup are in need of more extensive rebuilds. This refurbishment completely overhauls the secondary battery along the lines of LBS-26; the 140mm guns are now in deck mounts with hoists, the Anti-Aircraft Battery has been brought up to modern standards. The Fire Control System is also replaced wholesale to accommodate the changes.

Kaiser Kirk

On the aviation frigate, it's a big (litterally) advance from the Cardinal Richeliues.

Could you include the waterplane/hanger calc so we can see the airgroup result?
9m freeboard, so single hanger.
Single hanger means 3619/65= 55 aircraft - not 57.
2280 + 2280 = 4560 / 80 = 57 , so overpaid slightly

I notice the TDS is 2m higher than the draft, if you're deliberately having it rise above the WL to meet the deck like I do, it would be handy to mention that design feature in the notes. Otherwise it might be overlooked and you might not get credit for it.

I forgot just how many categories you broke out your Misc weight in.
Still difficult to ascertain how to evaluate all the categories in a battle
and how it would differ from what would normally be on a ship of that era.

There has been some discussions about 'how much' is needed for night fighting.
25tons is being judged as 'full' with searchlight tower and associated gear.
Less is kinda up to the different players. I've settled on 25t or equal to Fire control, whichever is less.

As a Mod clarification I have provided that 25t = full suite, including a Searchlight tower.
So, 55t may be more than you want.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest
