Alright Gents, I'm beginning the slog of getting the Aztec Empire, aka Sultanate underway.  Haven't decided on a few odds and ends, but I felt a need to get some designs fleshed out at least in part.  This is the current design for the Aztec light cruiser/ DD leader.  I've got battleships, armored cruisers, destroyers, and a lot of other ships to design in a relative hurry to get the Aztecs off the ground....then I can slowly and carefully consider new designs.

Without further ado:

I'll post some comments in the order I run into things.

1) TDS of any sort on a cruiser of this size is a waste of weight. You dont get enough depth out of it to resist anything meaningful.

2) The 88s in B and X superfiering the 105s at A and Y is unique. Not sure how much I would like being one of the 88's gunners without a blast shield of some sort.

3) The sloping freeboard feels off to me. I would go to a uniform high for the Forcastle and For Deck, and a lower height for the Aft Deck and Quarterdeck. Based on the drawing in Conways, this is what the OTL Magdeburg's had.

4) For a protected deck, its quite thin. I would take the strenght you get back from the TDS and dump it into the deck. 60mm seems about right.

Overall, I think its a good near-contemporary to the Roman Lauri class, but geared to a different environment. Good starting point for sure.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when solider lads march by
Sneak home and pray that you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

TacCovert4 asked for some help designing Aztec ships, since I have some available time.

First up is a German inspired pre-dreadnought with heavy secondaries. Six of the 150mm guns are on single turrets like the Kaiser Wilhelm III, the rest are on casements.
