Rocky, with such high prices, I will not often see my Inca friends.

Example 2: Suez Canal
Quote
When first opened in 1869, the canal consisted of a channel barely 26 feet (8 metres) deep, 72 feet (22 metres) wide at the bottom, and 200 to 300 feet (61 to 91 metres) wide at the surface. To allow ships to pass each other, passing bays were built every 5 to 6 miles (8 to 10 km). Construction involved the excavation and dredging of 97 million cubic yards (74 million cubic metres) of sediments. Between 1870 and 1884 some 3,000 groundings of ships occurred because of the narrowness and tortuousness of the channel. Major improvements began in 1876,

Excavation for the Suez canal would cost $18.5.
Presuming the ship went around Africa from Aden, and stopped at Alexandria, that would be about 11,500nm, rounds down to 11,000nm.  That would generate $5.50 / turn. This is assumed to be part of Byzantine's current IC and Revenue.

That mean, all ships with much 8m draught could'nt use Suez Canal in 1919.
If I want to my big ships could use the canal, I have to dredge the bottom at 11m, it will cost me $ 18.5.

Part 1.
The quote refers to the historical status, and has been there for quite some time.
The quote ends "Major improvements began in 1876,"

From the context, I think the canal was deepend from 1876-1884,
as that is when the groundings stopped.

That is also a decade before our pregame navies were to start.

Part 2.

If you have vessels with a deep draft of 11m, that may be an issue.
It has been too long since I tried to look it up,
but as memory serves the British as late as WW2 had a draft limit
of 9.5m or so.
As long as your Draught Normal is that or less, there is no problem.

It does sound like an issue that needs
A) more research
B) Snip's input - as initiator of N7, his view of what was intended is important.

Hmm, the 1957 deepening increased it from 35feet to 37feet,  or 10.67m to 11.28

Ok, took a little bit of digging (pun not intended).

QuoteAnd for years work went on to increase both the depth and width. In 1895, the canal was so enlarged as to give a depth of thirty-one feet, a width at the bottom of 108 feet, and at the surface of 420 feet.

In 1915 the channel was 36 feet deep, and the bottom width 134 feet. The deepest vessel to date, to pass through had a draft of 28 feet. The plan gave passage to vessels with a draft of 31 to 32 feet. Vessels have increased in size in keeping with the yearly increase in the size of the canal. In 1870 the average net tonnage was 898 tons per ship; this had increased by 1911 to 3,688 tons per ship.

Based on that, sometime around the 1910 Start of the Game, a draft of 9.45-9.75m was the maximum.
Which fits my recollection which was 9.5-9.6m in WW2.

I vaguely recall bringing up the Suez's depth ages ago, but it would have been pre-game or 1910ish.

Anyhow, on this matter Snip may overrule me and decree it can pass deeper.
World Design was on his watch, and as Mod Emeritus, that's what we pay him the big bucks for.

Apparently I will need to dredge the Kiel Canal before I try to run my just-started battlecruisers through it.

Desertfox

I'd say pick either 9.5m or 10.0m as the limit, that seems to align with historical precedent.

Snip has weighed in with his design intent.

Suez :
The Suez canal is considered an integral part of the Byzantine position.
By design, it is large enough to pass any Byzantine warships..whatever that is.
That will continue throughout the game.

Kiel :
Snip did not mention that. Doubt I asked...
However, I believe part of his point in expanding Wilno to Rotterdam was
to ensure good ports on the North Sea, while the Baltic is surrounded by Wilno.

The Danish straits are controlled by Wilno, and there is apparently a 377nm
route with a max depth of 15m that can be followed. https://danpilot.dk/pilotage/transit-pilotage/
So the Kiel does not seem to fall in the same critical category.

So, I do not believe Kiel is as strategically necessary as

Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

I paid for the historical Kiel canal expansion in about 1912 or so.  It's not a problem for me to dredge it a little deeper at some point, I'll just need to do the math and remember not to overdue my capital ship drafts.

That's what I recalled.
But with you controlling Denmark - and the Baltic, faster transit for a handful of ships may not be worth it.
