Liedtke Class Armored Patrol Sloop

Captain Hans Liedtke and his crew fought hard, but in the end - as reported in the 2H12 news - they were unable to prevent the loss of their ship and their lives in a gale in the Dragon's Tail (OTL Strait of Magellan).

Recognizing that its existing inventory of patrol craft were often incapable of patrol and search and rescue in the treacherous waters at the very southern tip of the Ericas, the Union Navy has proposed the construction of three so-called Armored Patrol Sloops to be based at Hiekka Niemeke (OTL Punta Arenas).  As the designation suggests, the class is extensively armored to protect against floating ice and collisions with other vessels, such as when coming alongside for inspections and rescues.  Even the underwater hull is protected against possible groundings in the relatively poorly charted waters.

Above water, the ship is kitted out with a towing rig, extra boats and cranes for rescue operations, and water cannons for fire-fighting.  Internally, the ship has additional medical facilities to treat casualties and an area of crowded, emergency bunking for survivors or other short-duration passengers.   A long-range wireless is fitted for communications purposes.

The ship is not heavily armed, and the main battery is mounted high on the centerline, to reduce wetness in bad seas and to avoid being destroyed in collisions and boarding operations.  That being said, the primary enemy of this type is the weather - not other ships.

Type 1917 Submarine Chaser

As part of a build-up on its anti-submarine capabilities, the Vilnius Union will build a good-sized batch of submarine chasers ("Ścigacz okrętów podwodnych").  With a basic hydrophone package, two quick-firing guns, and a bunch of depth charges, it's expected to be a serious threat to a submarine it happens to encounter - or at least make life difficult for said submarine.

Type 1917 Korweta

Complementing the submarine chaser would be a larger corvette ("korweta") with a heavier armament, enhanced hydrophone package, and electric drives to allow more precise maneuvering in pursuit of targets.  It's still a coastal defence vessel, though - not long-legged for cross-ocean work.

Quakenbruck Class Sloop

A decently armed, mostly unarmored sloop.  It would serve a few functions - trade protection and inspection, escort of naval auxiliaries.

I went back to single 130mm as the beam seemed a bit narrow for twins.

The 50mm secondary is for close-in deterrence/bang during inspections and other boarding actions.  The conning tower is armored against small-arms fire in case the inspectees are feeling their oats that day.

The range and speed would allow a decent operating radius across the Atlantic and the seakeeping is reasonable for that as well.

Type 1923 Coastal Escort

Scuttlebutt coming out of the nearby war - maybe a few of those 80,000 internees mentioned it in passing, who knows - is that airplanes are proving a bit more problematic than the Union might have anticipated.

The Union's existing complement of patrol vessels do not, thus far, feature much of an AA suite; they've mostly been built for observation and ASW.  A new coastal escort/patrol vessel would offer some decent all-round capability for its size.

This has a single 100mm gun for anti-surface work, and two 50mm AA guns to swat down bad guys.  A pair of fixed 450mm torpedoes offer a limited ability to threaten big bads or scuttle bad friendlies.  Hydrophones and a small suite of depth charges allow it to keep a submarine honest for a short time.

Type 1924 Korweta

The 1924 korweta class is somewhat longer and heavier than preceding types, and the flush deck gives her a decidedly chonky appearance.

The class replaces two 50mm QF with a second 100mm QF and a 50mm AA mount, both aft.  Operating range is increased.

The higher aft freeboard and longer enclosed superstructure should make the ship more habitable and workable in rough sea conditions.

Type 1926 Coastal Escort

The 1926 coastal escort takes advantage of slightly lighter machinery and trades some hull strength and anti-surface punch for the addition of a sonar dome, a bit more oil, and a bit more miscellaneous weight.

Visby Class Sloop

The V-class sloops are, functionally, replacements for the Vitava class protected cruisers, which have spent the last few years as heavy patrol assets in the Caribbean.

Though the sloop lacks significant protection, it has a heavier armament, superior speed and range, and scouting capability that the older cruisers lack.  It also has the legs for a patrol into the Atlantic and the command facilities to control an escort group as required.

A notional build of six to eight units is anticipated at this time.

Type 1928 Gunboat

The "Guntub" is designed to be lugged around by the Union's Korsarz and represents a small, slow way to get a light caliber gun into close range of a hostile shore target.  The production run will be small.
