Im a bit tied up today, so I can respond in more detail later. Is there a reason you wont just do construction from 1890-1899 with nothing funky?

Well one, it was simple enough not to occur to me as a viable option.  We have build points, they come at a certain rate, spending more than one has is simply illogical captain. Why again did I leave Vulcan ?

As for the funky....well the funky bits are part of the fun.
I do want at least a couple of Rams, and the Italians actually had some similar ships.
Likewise, I'd like to keep the Italia class, as Duillio was rebuilt 1898, as their troop lift capacity tickles me.
Other than that I've managed to make pretty standard vessels, and they mostly fit in 1888-1889. :) Should be good enough.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

Ok, so here are two MTBs,
the first is an 1898 upgrade, the 138t Condore capable of carrying the new torpedoes and the second is the S56 seen already, but without the Torpedo tubes specified. While the OTL had several other classes...here I'm skipping them.

I had started with the older ships in the fleet, so reworking for a younger timeline meant many of my original efforts needed to be redone.

Historically, the Italians fielded 11 predreadnaughts and had 4 building at 1900.
2 x Duillio
2x Italia
3x Ruggiero Di Lauria
These 7 were central-turret barbette battleships with 17"+ guns... mainly out of date. Historically rearmed in the 1890s, some rebuilt.

I've decided to scrap the first 2, as muzzle loading 450mm/20 just won't cut it.
The next 2 I will be retaining in large part for their amphibious capacity - noted for a 7.5m freeboard and the ability to pack in 10,000 troops. Where Duillio was historically reeingined, rearmed, rearmored in 1897-1898, instead these two will be.

The Ruggiero Di Lauria s will be moved up in time, and built much like Sargena of the next class the Umbertos were.  The 13.5"/30 of the Umberto class packed more kinetic energy per sq. inch than much later guns, so it's passable.
That will give 6 similar predreads as the core of the existing battlefleet.

The St. Bons and Regina Margerhetia I'm still tinkering with- historically they were building.

I should note, I generally start with the historic parameters and worked from there.  The Italians fielded big fast capital ships.

40 tons represents torpedoes in 4 beam and 1 bow tube. (note that firing submerged tubes while going over 20knots is hard).

The Ruggiero di Lauria Class was rearmed in 1895 with newer guns.

It appears Re Umberto and Sicilia may have been Barbette ships, but pictures of Sardegna show turrets, and the data shows turret armor.

126 tons of Miscellaneous weight below hull represents torpedo nets.
40 tons represents torpedoes in 4 beam and 1 bow tube. (note that firing submerged tubes while going over 20knots is hard).

The on deck includes 45t for 2xshort & 1xlong range sets, and 50 tons for an admirals suite.
The remaining 255tons are a design reserve.

As noted, it appears Re Umberto and Sicilia may have been Barbette ships, but pictures of Sardegna show turrets, and the data shows turret armor, so these have armor.

Last for now, but not least, the 1876 Italia. The design is that of the original ship, tweaked to work in SS3, with some additional elements from the 1873 Duillio class. In this case, the class is presented after an 1897-98 rebuild.
If I ever need to reinforce Corsica, they may be useful.

This design is a comprimise of the OTL Italia and Lepanto variations. more Lepanto.
OTL ships had a 7.5m freeboard, and carried troops, which can't work in SS3.

The protected deck is designed as 2 layers, with a "cellular raft" with dozens of compartments between. OTL citadel armor could not be fitted, 185belt is "best"

A variant on the historical Italia class.
These vessels have the same freeboard and dimensions as the historic ships.
Additionally, they have the 2 x TB (or landing craft) compartment in rear.

Rearmed, rearmored, & reegined in 1895 (instead of Duillio)
Miscellaneous weight:
122: Torpedo nets
16 : 32 x Torpedos : 2 bow tubes, 2 each beam.

2500 : Troop compartments for 10,000 troops (actually historical) for 1 day,
or 825 troops (Battalion) for longer.
100 : torpedo boat docking aft, now converted to landing barges

45t : 2x short range, 1x long range radios.
275 tons : Unallocated misc weight.

Total unpaid weight : 2775t

Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

This ram is intended to charge towards her foe and transfix them with the 100 ton foreward ram

The foreward 10"/32 mk II gun is fixed in traverse, but can elevate and depress, it is aimed by aiming the ship and hurtling towards the foe. A massive gun shield protects the weapon from ahead fire.

Behind the main gun are the double stacked casements of the 6" guns (ala Omaha CLs)

Scattered along the sides of the vessel are light anti TB guns.

The ship is designed as a protected cruiser, with 30mm flat, and 80mm slopes (50mm belt) along vitals

Of the miscellaneous weight, 35t is for a short & long range set. 105 is for torpedo nets, and 100 is unallocated.

Next, the Piemonte which at least one site claims was the first warship with VTE engines.
I was having horrid problems getting this ship to work.
Historically, it was the first warship with VTE engines, and had the record breaking speed of 20.4 knots.
Great.
It also was overarmed, and so they removed the 6x6" on it, and left the 6x4.7".
Ok.
Here, it was rearmed in 1893, 2x6" and 4x4.7" used.

But, the historical ship...still failed miserably in SS3. Negative comp hull.

So that's a fair bit to chew on. I still have a fair number of vessels to kick out.
Granted, mostly older, but I had started with the old stuff and so needed to bring them "forward". Before I did that, I wanted to figure out what they would be armed with.

Still have 6 PCs, 5 ACs, 15 Avisos, 6 destroyers, and 4 battleships to account for.
then there's the pair of monitors I'm considering- Or I can build more ACs... or account for the fleet train.

but enough for now.

Let me know if I'm mucking something up.

I see a few things that need correcting or further comment.

We decided (tho I dont recall if ether Logi or I wrote it down) that wireless sets would be a 1900 or later thing. So that is a no-go on pre-start ships.

Re Umberto and Lepanto need to have Engine Year 1890 unless they are reconstructed in 1898 or later. Then they would get 1900 engines.

Also on Lepanto, you have the 37mm noted as MGs. I assume you ment QF?
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when solider lads march by
Sneak home and pray that you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Good for finding them,
I didn't know on the radios, wondered since one of the ships is the one Marconi used for his experiments ship-to-shore in 1902(?) ish, but didn't see anything about it. Easy to fix.

Engine year - the idea is Italia and Lepanto are indeed rebuilt, new guns, new engines, new armor.  I'm strongly considering using the guns on some monitors.

As for Re Umberto for some reason I was just assuming (bad of me) there were 5 year increments there, and they went 1890, 1895, 1900. I'll have to fix that on some ships I'm working on there.

As for the 37mm, I've been consolidating my weapons table and looked to have mashed 2 37mms together.
I've got the 37mm 1885 as a Maxim-Nordenfeldt, which was a big MG, but it was 1888, /30 with a 0.45kg shell. I wonder if I deleted a 5 barrel hotchkiss and put this in it's place?  http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNRussian_37mm-30_maxim.htm

a ship I'm not certain I shall build.
They would be a pair of monitors featuring guns removed when Italia and [/i]Lepanto[/i] were rebuilt.
Which would also slake my desire to field 17" guns.... and given the number of islands around, may be useful.

Embarrasingly, I seem to have failed to save the final version of Ammiraglio St. Bon, a pair of predreadnaughts for the mid 1890s.  Historically, they were an attempt to build predreads on the cheap, armed with 4x10" and- for Italians, slow at 18.3kts. In Navalism they will be a cut down version of the next class presented.

which brings us to a class that will be building in 1900, the Regina Margarhetia. Inspired by the double casements of the Hapsburg class, but with more of them, it's a mid-caliber beast. Considering the ranges the Spanish American War was fought out, and the number of fires started, alot of shells capable of punching through medium armor has it's appeal. At 20 knots they are actually....just as fast as historical (20, 20.3).

Some neat designs here.

I wondered how you'd do Italia/Lepanto, and what you've got makes sense.  It's a concept worth contemplating for those of us operating in confined waters.

I like the idea of a monitor, but her speed seems pretty high.

Regarding the Regina Marghetia and her 20 194mm guns.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when solider lads march by
Sneak home and pray that you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.
-Siegfried Sassoon

Snip - thanks. Good bad or indifferent, it's fun.
Rocky-  I didn't look at the historic RN Monitors, I should have.  I simply chose a top speed requiring 4x the SHP that the cruising speed did, and set the latter equal to the rest of the Italian fleet. Nearly done with the various classes, so I'll be deciding if Monitors or some cruisers are of more use.

Well currently my spreadsheet tracking ship costs - and I had to remember to go back and subtract that reserve tonnage many of my ships have- has a surplus of 2.014BP. I'd like to put that into moving the Regina and Garibaldi closer to completion, yet I remain inspired by Rocky's fleet train and want to add some...which will have to be later. I may eliminate a couple Partenope gunboats, or resize a monitor.

However, I think I've finished Lampo- the first DD class (Fulmine was the first Italian DD), though it doesn't make the historic 30knts on trials, just 27.
The AC class of the Garibaldis has been worked up. While OTL the cruisers were impressive, here there are a number of big ACs already, so they are not so gaudy. They are under construction in 1900.
The Volcano class of 3 scout cruisers will stand in for a number of very small "torpedo cruisers" the Italians had.
The Agordat class of protected cruisers will round out the fleet.
Last but not least, the 2 Ammiraglio St. Bon battleships. Mounting the historic 10" guns, they represent the same school of thought as Jackie Fisher that the higher ROF of the 10" would lead to more telling hits at battle ranges than the 12".  Of course the later 12" has a great deal more kick.

Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest
