66 ships today puts them 58th among today's nations, right behind Lithuania, and right ahead of Venezuela, according to the wikipedia list I suspect you pulled that number from. Hardly a shipping power. How many of those are engaged in trade outside the Black Sea? Also, just how much shipping is flowing through Romania without the Danube-Black Sea canal?

Even tankers to New Zion would not be nearly as numerous as you expect. How much oil do you think a nation so small consumes?

At any rate, even if there are 66 ships (flagged or simply Romanian owned?), I seriously doubt any of them are traveling to the relative backwater that is the Rift Sea. That number also doubtlessly pales in comparison to the top Nverse shippers. Pretty much all our player nations, with the exception of Ireland will have more merchant ships flagged by their nations or owned by their nationals.

In the area, the vast vast majority of merchant ships will be Orange, DKB, or Italian, with Swiss, GC, Dutch, Ottoman and French also comprising large percentages. It is these 8 nations that are most likely to suffer a minestrike, I expect.

Overall, a plea to all: New Zion is miniscule in economic terms compared to world GDP. There just isn't that much reason for ships to go there. Let's not get carried away.

Sachmle

Oh, I agree wholeheartedly. I doubt there are more than a couple of DKB tramp freighters that even go to NZ. Most of what little we import to them probably gets dropped of at Nairobi and taken overland the rest of the way. We could just as easily travel up the south end and stop there. As to exports, well I doubt Dodoma is the destination for many of them, most will come to Dar-es-Salaam I'm sure.

Well, having a whole-lotta oil tankers, to supply the RRC and France and Orange, as mandated by treaties, and other nations, does help. :P

Also, 66 and 40 and 22 together does make 128, still a significant power....and we would take the Rift Valley route to supply Orange...not much traffic to New Zion, but the lane to Orange is important.

The Persians must be very surprised to find out they aren't shipping oil to Orange anymore. At any rate, the Italians have been rattling the saber for some time now. Would not a smart captain take the long way around? I also suspect that maritime insurers might require ships to avoid the Rift Sea simply because of the number of underwater hazards present there since the last war, especially for ships not bound for ports there.

To our Brothers around the World. Once again we face the murderous hand of the Roman Legions and the Catholic Popes. For two thousand years we have been without a land to call our own, and now we are once again a free nation. The Papist Nations unable to see a free and independent Jewish Nation, are once again on the warpath. We ask for your support and help in this time of trial.

"We have a situation," Princess Flowranis said, as she walked into the office of Alexandru Ulmais, the Foreign Minister.

"What is it, ma'am," Alexandru replied wearily, as he looked up from his desk. His workload had grown sevenfold since the beginning of the war, and it was taking its toll on his sleep.

"The Zionites are blaming us, apparently, for the war. Why would they be doing that? It's simply unacceptable to blame us for what happens to them, by their own hand. We weren't even invovled in this war!" she said, irritated not at him, but at the Zionites.

"I'm....not sure, Flora," he said. He had taken to calling her Flora since the war, as the amount of times she had seen him had also expanded, and his sense of etiquette had been another thing that had fallen to his workload. "It may be an error, but you never know with those pawns of the Swiss. They do seem to like to antagize even us, one of their closest friends, simply because they have no other nations that even listen to them."

"Send them a message, or something, please? Cause that cannot be allowed," she said, gentler this time.

"I'll get on it," he said, already looking back down at his paperwork.

September 4th

"What's all of this about sacks of rice in the pantry? And why are there 100 bottles of this "Ruou De" in the wine cabinet?" said Princess Flowranis, still in her leather flight jacket after taking a short flight back from a meeting with Admiral Burestai in Constanta?

"Well, well, well, your majesty," began her Grand Bouteiller, the master of the wine, "An ambassador from some foreign nation, Chinese or something to that regard, came to the Imperial Palace while you were in Constanta. He asked to see you, and when one of the Butler's told him you were not home, he sat down in the front parlour, and is still there. He brought some gifts, which were the rice and this "Ruou De."

"Don't keep him waiting," she said, slightly irritated. "Bring him in here!"

About five minutes later, the Grand Bouteiller walked back in, with the Indochinese ambassador. After he had taken a seat, the Bouteiller spoke up.

"Would you like a glass of Burgundy?" he said. "Or maybe a glass of Pinot Noir?"

"The do will the Burgundy." the Indochinese ambassador said, in very choppy Romanian. After that was fetched for him and the Princess, the ambassador, with a huge smile on his face, decided to speak.

"My Country and President would thank to like you for the genius ideas of your ambassador. We had budget surplus years two ago, and not knowing what to do, we ask your ambassador what to do it with. Suggested he to invest it in the economy. Now our economy flowering is! Thank you for suggestion the!"

"Well, you are welcome, for the deeds of my humble ambassador. And thank you for the wine. I understand it is a deliciay in your nation?" the Princess, rather startled, replied.

"Oh, yes, it be delicious," the ambassador replied. "Now, if excuse me you will, I must be leaving. I have a rather important meeting with the Minster Naval about purchases."

ooc :
I thought I had some link squirreled away with Merchant marine sizes, but it turned out to be 1939's top 8 http://www.historians.org/Projects/GIRoundtable/Fleet/Fleet1.htm

Doing some simple searching, I did come across a forum that addressed the Rumanian size in 1940 and has a list of shipping losses and tonnages. That also gives a nice illustrations of tonnages. As with all forums, the value of the data is suspect, but if 516,000 tons is correct, that was sizable in 1940.
http://www.feldgrau.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=5659

Given the rise of modern "flags of convieniance" the 1940 numbers are probably relatively more representive of 1919  than current figures. Also, just looking at the google results, it seems the Rumanian merchant navy has been subject to substantial declines since the 1990s, referred to as a scandal for reasons I did not explore.

I strongly doubt the average tonnage would be 8,000, most frieghters would be substantially smaller. Use the type 0 port as a common reference.  An example of tonnage ranges can be found in US losses..of course those are Gross, standard would be larger.  http://www.usmm.org/ww1merchant.html

Actually Ireland might have more than Bavaria :) When Trieste was the seaport of the Hapsburgs "By 1913 Austrian Lloyd had a fleet of 62 ships comprising a total of 236,000 tons."....but I doubt much of that survived the change of ownership...
