A Refurbishment of the Henrique o Navegador class of AC's for their 10 year over hauls.

10.3 * 0.2 = $2.06 each
New Misc Weight = $0.3 & 0.3 BP each
Coal to Oil Conversion 1,657 / 2,000 = $0.8285

$3.189 & 0.3 BP each

Note some wierd things happened when I changed the engines to oil fired total engine weight went down and I picked up extra armor weight for some reason.  Range increased because of the better performance of oil but bunkerage weight dropped.

Two options for oil firing.
a/ install oil burners in existing machinery. This should not make the ship any lighter, contary to whatever SS2 is thinking. Keep coal firing in sim, decrease bunkerage to cover misc weight. Sim again for the same bunkerage weight to get new range.
b/ install new boilers. They'd weight say half of the machinery, 800t or so. Sim as usual.

I tried to do something like A but shoved my structural strength below 1.0.  If I keep range the same I have to much structural strength.  So what I did was add 300 tons to cover my needs and put what was left over into oil.  Then I got all the wierd weight changes...

As to B if go that route might as well do a radical reconstruction and totally replace the machinery.  Could double the SHP and push the speed to 25 knots.

I posted such sim in my old BB thread.
What I did was to keep coal firing for the weight calculation, added the misc weight, then decreased bunkerage till I get a composite strength of 1.00. Structural weight might change (or not), but assume some of the misc weight is reinforcement. Save/Copypaste report
Then changed to oil firing, set range so that the bunkerage would have the same weight as above. Put a note in the report about the real range.

I'd argue that the ship should be reclassified as a second-class/coastal BB if no new machinery.
With new machinery it could operate with your 23-25kts ACs.
I'd consider extending the hull and the machinery spaces to get 28kts, but that is getting expensive.

A more radical reconstruction of the AC's this is to allow them enough speed to operate with larger 1907 class AC's.

172 tons of light displacement = $0.172 and 0.172 BP

Change to trim, freeboard, etc.
10473 / 5000 = $2.1

Convert to all oil fired bunkerage
2735 / 2000 = $1.37

Increase Misc Weight
2 tons to 328 = $0.326 & 0.326 BP

New 38,000 SHP Machinery
1,416 tons / 1,000 = $1.416 & 1.416 BP

Scrap old Machinery 1,667 * 0.15 = +$0.25 + 0.25 BP

If I go by hull weight the math its 4497-4422=75 tons.... 75/1000= 0.075 BP and $.15.  I didn't see the change in hull costs that reconstruction has...  Might want to move some of the text up to Refurbishments as it assumes as near as can tell no change in displacement which you are going to get if you change bunkerage.

On a refurbishment there is no cost for the change in displacement. This is because the rules assume that the hull around and below the waterline hasn't changed. You rightly point out that changing fuel will inevitably change light displacement (since SS calculates light based on normal), and at least in theory you ought to also then change draft and freeboard slightly to compensate, but this isn't necessary according to our rules.

Similarly, if you are keeping your existing machinery, and just changing it to 100% oil fired, there's no additional machinery cost. The cost of this conversion is covered by the general refurbishment cost.

In this case though, the whole plant is being changed, the whole weight of the new plant must be accounted for.

So by my math (meaning of course I made a spreadsheet), your refurbishment should be:

This is before any costs recouped by scrapping the old machinery. If you wanted to charge yourself more, I suppose you could charge yourself the cost of the oil going in, but in my mind I'd always figured that the coal coming out has value somehow too, and the two cancel each other out.

That to me says you need pay bunkerage / 2000 to convert to oil inpart or whole.

Also Misc weight is going from 2 to 328 tons.

The Base cost I thought would be 10.3 * 0.2 = $2.06 & 0 BP. "A refurbishment costs 20% of the original dollar cost of construction, plus the dollar and BP costs of new components described below.  Refurbishments take the greater of 2.5 months, or 25% of the ship's original minimum time of construction plus one month per 2 BP of new components added to the ship."

This will save me a few bucks no matter what though.

Right. You're paying to gas the ship up before it leaves the yard, in essence. But the coal you're taking out also has value. I suppose you'd be right either way you want to do it. If you want to include the value from the "bunkerage" blank on the engines tab divided by 2000 in your costs, feel free.
