She puts on about ten thousand tons when she's loaded, yeah, but that comes out of the operations budget, not construction.

Very nice effort on the artwork. Are those roll down doors amidships for boats possibly?

The one criticism I have is the mastwork. I like that you tried for something distinctive for your ship, but I suspect that the latticework masts would likely have been much heavier than necessary for the weights they are carrying. Such masks didn't really come into style in our timeline until the need to carry radar up high came along.

The tertiary armament in turrets is also an interesting choice. I understand the the thinking there (especially with the decks space issues of all those guns on board and the potential blast interference). I wonder though if those turrets might not have trouble tracking their intended targets quickly enough.

Please don't take this comments as anything else but the most well meaning constructive criticism however. She is otherwise splendidly belligerent looking, especially her bow with that paint scheme.

And the CSA is probably most interested in Maori thoughts on barbette reinforcements. :) I may have mistakenly understood that you were adopting the CSA 15" gun, which is a true 15" (381 mm), not a 380 mm gun. If Maoria developed it's own, that's cool, I'm happy to see Confederate ideas on turret design finding other adherents.

Oh and for other readers: Valles' illustration is actually a lot bigger (1231 by 762 pixels), so if you want to get a better look at her, I recommending opening just the image in your browser or downloading it.

The doors amidships are indeed for ship's boats, yes. Once I decided to move the 75s up from their original hull casements there really wasn't anyplace else I could put them that wasn't in the way of one or the other of the turrets.

The mast design I selected, oh, way back when I started playing, based on the memory that the USN's cage masts, as bulky as they looked, were actually lighter than the RN's tripod designs. The Maori setup is essentially intended to be strong only against the compression and weight of the equipment atop it; lateral stability comes from the wire stays that I once again forgot to draw. ^_^;; (along with spotlights, argh.)

The 75s might well end up being found to be too cramped in actual service; I've been eyeballing them to replace each pair with an additional twin 150 turret (total of four new)... but that won't be for a couple of years until after she's done either way.

The main guns... um, argh. The one millimeter difference in bore could easily just be the use of a marginally thicker liner, but the shell design...

Hm. Welp, I'm waiting for the armor tech to be ready anyway, there may end up being time to get a new gun ready first.

I don't think time to build is necessarily a reason not to build a ship like this. To whit: an 8x15" BB with reasonable protection and stability is going to displace at least 28,000 tons (at least built to confederate standards). That's a 37 month ship, so in practical terms, probably a 39 month or 42 month ship. So 10x15" in 42 months is reasonable.

To get under 42 months build time, you'll either accept less barrels, smaller caliber, or less protection. Taking less speed than 20 or 21 knots probably won't help you all that much either. At least in my recent experience working on 15" and larger armed ships, it seems the hull size is dictated more by stability requirements than speed, at least up until about 23 knots or so.

For the Maori, the choice is likely something to the extent of building 2 18,000 ton ships, or one 34,000 ton ship. You can build two pretty nice 13.5" armed 18,000 tonners, that's true, but they will be completely outgunned by a 15" armed ship.

Updated with the armor layout - I blame Korpen.
