I started with something along the lines of Scott's RRS Discovery, but it became a little bit bigger than that.
While it is a civilian ship, the 17.7% armor on it means that it needs to be built as a military ship and cannot use the Mercantile Standards/Auxiliaries rule.
Now the springstyle notes says...
Quotecivilian merchant ships, divide crew and damage survival values by 10 - they have small crews, and lack the extensive compartmentation of naval ships.
... but that would mean a crew of 17-23 while the 1000 ton smaller RRS Discovery had a crew of 11 officers and 36 men. 179 - 233 look to be way too much, so I divided that value by 2 instead of 10 which, compared with the Discovery's crew and all that rigging that needs to be tended, probably gives a more realistic value. I kept survivability as is since it is built as a military vessel.
The whole hull of the ship is protected. The main belt thickness is 3 inches except for the forward 20 feet which is 6 inches thick. The rest of the bow area is 4 inches thick and the rest of the hull is 1 inch thick.
The extreme angle of the bow of 68 degrees is to get the proper length oa with the bowsprit sticking out on the front. The rigging weight and sailing speed is based on calculations of a previous version of Navalism (half hull speed = 5% normal displacement weight, every additional knot = +1% normal displacement weight, every additional knot above hull speed = +2% normal displacement weight)
Expedition members and scientists weight values are based on those of a liner that I use. Expedition leader cabin = 1st class passenger (= 2x cabin passenger weight for given year), scientists and/or senior expedition members = 2nd class passengers (= cabin passenger weight for given year) and finally the other expedition members = 3rd class passengers (= steerage passenger weight for given year).
