Title: Ottomania runs wild...
Post by: The Rock Doctor on April 15, 2014, 11:04:01 AM
I'm sure engine years and gun calibres will need tweaking.

Anywho:

The oldest "modern" capital ships in Ottoman service are German-built variants of the Siegfried-class coastal defence battleships. By 1900, these have been relegated to station duty in more remote bases and auxiliary functions at home.

In due course, the Ottomans - like the Germans - figured that the CDS ships weren't really up to spec.  When the Germans ordered the Brandenburg class, the Ottomans paid attention and ordered some (slightly modified) versions for themselves.  The first was built in Germany, the second and third at Constantinople with German assistance.  These probably took a year or two extra to complete.

One of the ships was subsequently lost in an explosion, and I won't be counting that in my starting allowance.

Per the gun table here (http://www.navalism.org/index.php/topic,6422.msg83932.html#msg83932), those 280mm should remain 35 caliber weapons. If they are meant to be direct copies of the historical 28 cm MRK L/40 (http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNGER_11-40_skc90.htm), as permissible under the historical guns clause AFAIK, then they should have the historical shell weight.

And then the butterflies flap.

Figuring that the Battle of the Yalu doesn't happen as historical, the Ottomans (maybe the Germans, too) don't get really excited about intermediate-caliber rapid-fire guns.  So when the time comes for new battleships, they don't that the German approach of putting 24cm guns as the main caliber.

Instead, they basically stretch their previous class.  This provides space for a uniform main battery, and incremental improvements in most other respects.

All three are built locally, using some imported components (guns, range finders, etc).  I'd wager the third is still building in 1900, and the second might be just finishing as well.

They are indeed meant to be historical, so I guess I'll tweak the shell weights when I do the next round of sims.

Two technical notes.

1) The 1897 battleships need to have 1890 engines. If you move the laydown date up to 1898, they can have 1900 engines. We are going with 3 years after listed date for implementation of techs that happen between 1890 and 1899. Given how you have stated the ships will/could be under construction at sim start, the latter might be a better solution.

2) We are still going to account for torpedoes in Misc weight as SS3 sometimes does not count the weights listed under its torp loadouts. It looks as if all these designs have the necessary weight, so moving the requisite tonnage below the waterline should not cause much, if any change.

1)  Okay, I'll bump them to 1898.  No problem with that.  Probably means #1 is finished, #2 is launched, and #3 would be laid down in 1900.

2)  Easily enough fixed, thanks.

Starting to build the smaller units of the navy.  I'm finding that my "modern" fleet costs almost $5 in upkeep, or around 20% of the Ottoman budget, yet I've only spent 202 of 240 BP allocated for fleet purposes.  I have a suspicion I may end up allocating the remaining 38 BP to older stuff - sailing ships, armored frigates, etc., all of which would be in reserve.

Fleet make-up kind of looks like this:

3 BB @ 11,871 t L
3 BB @ 9,997 t L
6 CB @ 3,797 t L

3 AC @ 8,243 t L
7 PC @ 2,780 t L
12 PC @ 2,136 t L

20 TB @ 500 t L
36 TB @ 200 t L
10 GB @ 600 t L
8 River gunboats @ 500 t L
14 River gunboats @ 250 t L
46 Patrol/customs boats @ 50 t L

6 transports (civ spec) @ 2,000 t L
8 transports (civ spec) @ 4,000 t L
14 tugs (civ spec) @ 400 t L
6 colliers (civ spec) @ 4,000 t L
4 survey ships (civ spec) @ 1,000 t L
1 hospital ship (civ spec) @ 4,000 t L
1 royal yacht (civ spec) @ 2,000 t L

3 large shore battery @ 1 BP each
2 medium shore battery @ 0.5 BP each
18 small shore battery @ 0.1 BP each

491 tonnes Light is indeed a big bad destroyer for pre-1900. HMS Havock was only commissioned in 1894 and weighed in at 240t light. The Brits OTL didn't build em that big until the Rivers, completed in 1905. The Germans didn't build them that big until 1905 or 1906 (sorry I can't be more precise, I don't have a better source for German boats than Wikipedia in front of me right now).

You're not wrong.  I was having considerable difficulty successfully simming a smaller type, but think I'm on track for that now.

Still - this guy has the same dimensions as the German Type 1898 boat, right down to the deep draft.  But even with a BC of just 0.40, the actual displacement is much higher.  Not really sure what, if anything, I can do about that.

But this ain't bad, and the "trials speed" is probably up around the historical class' 27 kts.

Lots of small coast defense ships please.

Yeah, I think we need to role play a bit for the era between 1890 or so and 1900.

Should I arm them or leave them as "fitted for but not with"?

Indeed.  I will have to reign myself in a bit.

A generic river gunboat for service on the Danube/Sava, Euphrates/Tigris, and Nile river systems.  It's primarily intended to keep locals in line, so the armament is not super crazy.  The armor protection is basically intended to keep bullets out of the important bits.

Seakeeping is not great, but ought to be just fine for rivers.

The main gun is a howitzer, to facilitate shelling forts or elevated positions as might be found on river banks.

The miscellaneous weight was originally for deck cargo or a small detachment of troops.

On the small riverboat, I'd mount a smaller gun. I think rate of fire would matter more, and with something like a 75mm you can carry a lot more ammunition. It'd still be plenty to scare the locals.

It occurred to me that I'm trying to pack too much into the 1898-99 period for the new engine year, so I will be tinkering with smaller stuff designs once I figure out sequencing for everything.

Okay, I'm sorted out.  Major changes to my previous OrBat will be:

-Two of the three newest battleships are still under construction as the sim begins.

-I am counting a blown-up PD in my BP totals.

-There are only 2 (no longer 3) ACs from the mid '90s.

-But I'm adding 2 smaller ~5,000 t AC from the early '90s.

-My larger class of CLs will be remodelled with the 1890 engine tech.

-Half of the new, big TB will be remodelled with the 1890 engine tech.

Let's revisit armored cruisers.

The older pair are, indeed, older.  I was eyeballng the historial Austrian Kaiserin und Konigin Maria Theresia class as I built this.  The outcome was less sucky than I expected.

The newer AC class suffers from the older machinery, but has some general similarities to the historical German designs of the period.

The Sultan's royal yacht, which is rigged for sailing whenever the Sultan isn't in the mood for coal smoke.

The remaining miscellaneous weight above water and on deck would be assigned to accommodation/recreation/working space for the Sultan's immediate retinue, while the below-water cargo would be stuff like the sultan's baggage train and maybe his private motorcade or something.

The four guns are saluting mounts rather than combat pieces.

The tug seems big, at least for harbor use.

For instance: http://www.steelnavy.com/Tug%20Brooklyn.htm (http://www.steelnavy.com/Tug%20Brooklyn.htm)

Hmm.  Maybe I'll leave that design as an oceanic-ish design and add a smaller class for harbour work.

I get the impression I'm the only person who will be starting out with a fleet train.

You may inspire others.
I recall in Wesworld, when I joined, I was informed fleet trains and such were all handwaved in.
Later, esp after the mercantile construction rule, folks were making them.
This kinda shows the use from the get go.

Well, seeing as the USN really didn't need to go anywhere more then a few hours from a base until recently, I think an underdeveloped fleet train is period. Given that I still dont really have major places to go, I don't think it has to get to big. Maybe any intervention in Panama *ahem* Columbia will change that line of thought.
