Title: Need some designs, Austria-Hungary
Post by: miketr on October 08, 2012, 07:10:48 PM
Hey Darman has a couple of designs up for Austria but I need to make some 'minor' changes and I need some other designs.  As I am trying to feel my way back into the rules if people would be willing to help me out with some designs I would be grateful.

Armored Cruiser

Max of 120 Meters, 19+ knots, 4,000 NM @ 10 knots (I want to place 1 one Black Sea, so need a bit more range)
Weapons to choose from http://www.navalism.org/index.php/topic,5977.msg78610.html#msg78610

Coast Defense Battleship
The current choices are good but I will stay with historic Hapsburg weapons so at game start nothing larger than a 240mm main.  So the 'Schwarzenburg' needs to be redesigned to 240mm guns.  Perhaps a bit more speed?  Try to keep them to 9,500 light tons displacement or less.

Protected Cruiser
Weapons, 19 cm / 15 cm / 12 cm main
20.5+ knots speed
Keep 'em under 4,500 tons light displacement

KWorld thanks for the design files.

I made some modifications to the PC design provided.  Increased length slightly and put in 120mm weapons in place of the 70mm.

As long as you develop the 120mm, that's fine.  :)  I figure when I'm kicking up a design for someone else, provide the design file so they can modify it as needed.

The one thing that I'd worry about the new design is that anti-TB firepower seems a bit light: all you've got is 2 120mm and 4 3 pounders per side.

Oh I know, it would be better to ditch the 19 cm mains for another four 12 cm QF.  My main worry was to get the design to 3,500 tons and 12 cm weapons.  I will refine the design later on.

so knowing the situation in the med as I do (seriously ACs under 20 knots need to just go away there) I came up with this little toy for your study.  Now like Jef I dont feal that 2 main guns is enough so I gave her 4, and a 5K@10 range.  she has 116 tons left over in a building/whatever reserve.  I also included the SS file so you can play with her if ya want to.

You may want to move the torpedoes below-deck, above deck they're vulnerable to exploding if they're hit by a 9-pounder.

I really do NOT like this design that I a came up with.

More than double the size to get 1 more knot of speed?!? compared to this design.

http://www.navalism.org/index.php/topic,5979.msg78663.html#msg78663

I was hoping to go to a 10K design to get 22 knots and roughly same weapons.  I will have to rethink this.

On the AC, take a look at my USS Georgia, it's about the right size for what you're looking for, and with 1900 engines can probably be modified to be close to what you want.  At least it's a starting point.

Don't know that I'd be happy with only 2 70mms and 2 3-pounders on each side as TB defenses myself.  Given how narrow the seas where the Austrians operate are...... no, I wouldn't be happy.  But it's not my ship.  :)

with 20.5 knot BBs in service I cant justify a 22 knot AC weighing only 3K tons less than them... However I imagine the mission for these would be as raiders/fast heavy scouts for the battleline.  In that mission they would chew up my PCs so I would have to say its a reasonable ship. (outside the sorta light anti TB/DD battery)

Its not final design, I can double the 70/47mm guns with no real effort.  Since A-H BB's are 18 knot designs a 22.5 knot design is a real bonus.  Also this will odds are be built for the Black Sea.  If no one buys the 4 BP I have for sale then it will be a two ship both in the Adriatic.

Depending on who else has BP to offer for Sale, Italia may be interested in the ones your offering likley as 500 ton DDs without guns (since I use a mismash of German and British guns) but it all depends at this point...

Probably something with the direct drive/geared drive/etc options sellected. Probably something done there that SS does not like.
