The rate of fire will drop to nothing once the ready rounds are out, it might actually be better to just go with a heavier gun if you are going have stacked turrets.

The stacked turrets on USS Kearsarge and USS Virginia weren't glowing successes, but they weren't that bad, either.

Personaly I never liked that layout (for starters it just looks funky) but it might give you a jumpstart on the SF layout style (for this mod atleast it would depend on the quality of the storyline and you showing what I felt was a beliveable liniar progression)

QuoteMain belt does not fully cover magazines and engineering spaces
You might want to tweak the belt length a little.

As it is longer than 170 m it would require a type 3 dock/slip, are you aware of that?
Title: Re: Ships of the US Navy
Post by: KWorld on October 17, 2012, 12:15:05 PM
<shrug>  I've got 10 of each, and that's not counting the Type 4 slips & docks I have (4 of each).  It IS slightly awkward in that it's JUST BARELY over the length of a Type 2, though, so I may see if I can tweak it a little to save around 5 feet.

What exactly do you mean by that? Especially the "MMB"?

I expect he means the following:

BB/AC Architecture - Main battery in turrets
1880: Main guns in twin turrets, secondaries in casemate
1890: Mixed main armament or AQY with double turrets+casemates
1904: All-big-gun ship with wing turrets, superfiring turrets (restricted axial firing arcs), improved turret hydraulics, Torpedo Bulkheads
1906: Superfiring turrets (unrestricted firing arcs), triple turrets
1912: Quadruple turrets
1920:  No restriction (high or low) on caliber of turreted guns

Secondaries are 4-7" guns. 8-10" medium-caliber guns are not secondaries, but medium-caliber main guns

The "MMB" is a reference to the comment in the above about 8-10" guns being medium-caliber main guns, though he used a B vs a G (probably for battery).  The 1890 tech doesn't allow for a mixed main armament on AQY ships, you can have either a mixed main armament OR AQY, not both, which my design had.

Why don't you make the mine warfare ship single shaft to save weight and simplify the design?

Because I want them to be able to dock without needing a tug, and generally be able to maneuver at lower speeds.  A single-shafted ship is going to lose rudder authority, where a dual-shafted vessel can manuever with differential thrust.  Also, if I were desperate to save weight, I'd go to a complex reciprocating engine instead of the simple one I'm using.

And a smallish collier for the USN.  Even though she's not huge by any means, she can still carry 4500 tons of coal, and she's equipped with cranes to unload the coal.  (And she only costs $ 0.16 to keep on active status per half-year.)

USS Hannibal, United States Collier laid down 1901 (Engine 1900)

A quick design sketch of a heavy armored cruiser/fast battleship to match the French armored cruisers with their 274mm guns.  The USN lacks any guns between the 10"/45 and the 12"/40, so this design carries the 12"/40.

USS Minnesota, United States Battleship laid down 1900

Displacement:
   16,411 t light; 17,239 t standard; 18,566 t normal; 19,627 t full load

Dimensions: Length (overall / waterline) x beam x draught (normal/deep)

I think its too early for secondaries in twins. Except of course for something like a 10" intermediate battery.

I think those are stacked turrets, ala Kersarge. KWorld. if you want your shell weights to sick as whole pounds, for some reason you need to add a .00 onto the end of each one. Otherwise it adds that annoying .01, and yes it bugs me a bit when it does that to my designs.

These 6" twin secondaries are in stacked turrets, like on USS Kearsarge or USS Virginia.  They're not mounted separately, should have made that clear.

QuoteA quick design sketch of a heavy armored cruiser/fast battleship to match the French armored cruisers with their 274mm guns.  The USN lacks any guns between the 10"/45 and the 12"/40, so this design carries the 12"/40.

Armament race is expensive with expansion engines ...

I could built a lighter version 8500-9000t with 2T2x274-21kts.
or re SS with 3T2x240mm guns from D'Entrecasteau AC

I dont like to have all eggs in the same basket...

Italia is honestly Snickering at all of them... only a knot faster than my True BBs, not worth it IMHO (actualy if I slashed their armor to the level on these ships I could be a knot faster... yes I experimented with it...)

I'm not thrilled with this idea, at all, having planned on an 18-knot battle line being sufficient until new engine techs come along and become useful.  But that happy world may have been blown up with the stroke of a pen.

Build big fast ships is not cool for medium & small countries.
They are out of the game before playing  :'(

Ok France didnt built cruisers with 3T2x274-12400t
I built a mixture of AC3 & AC4 - 12400t/8500t

10450t-2T2x274+164mm guns-21,..kts

You could be Russia, having to defend against two great powers on land and three on the sea, separated by thousands of miles. That's why my armored cruisers are basically fast light battleships. They might not be able to outrun other armored cruisers, but they can certainly put up quite the fight against most ships able to catch them, Italian battleships being about the only warships they are vulnerable to.
