Title: Habsburg minesweeper M1918
Post by: Borys on October 14, 2009, 03:27:21 AM
I decided that it was time to refresh my design with newer engines and more misc. weight. I also gave them pom-poms.
Nothing exciting - two will be laid down each year starting 1918.

   £0,067 million / $0,268 million

Distribution of weights at normal displacement:
   Armament: 8 tons, 1,4%
   Machinery: 80 tons, 13,5%
   Hull, fittings & equipment: 233 tons, 39,5%
   Fuel, ammunition & stores: 150 tons, 25,3%
   Miscellaneous weights: 120 tons, 20,3%

- minesweeping equipment
- rails for 30 mines

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
     1 205 lbs / 547 Kg = 37,7 x 4,0 " / 102 mm shells or 0,7 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1,15
   Metacentric height 0,8 ft / 0,2 m
   Roll period: 11,5 seconds
   Steadiness   - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 50 %
         - Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0,18
   Seaboat quality  (Average = 1.00): 2,00

Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak
   Block coefficient: 0,639
   Length to Beam Ratio: 7,92 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 13,78 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 51 %
   Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 25
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 0,00 degrees
   Stern overhang: 0,00 ft / 0,00 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
      - Stem:      20,00 ft / 6,10 m
      - Forecastle (25%):   19,00 ft / 5,79 m
      - Mid (30%):      19,00 ft / 5,79 m (11,00 ft / 3,35 m aft of break)
      - Quarterdeck (15%):   11,00 ft / 3,35 m
      - Stern:      11,00 ft / 3,35 m
      - Average freeboard:   13,50 ft / 4,11 m

Ship space, strength and comments:
Space   - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 77,6%
      - Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 130,2%
Waterplane Area: 3 458 Square feet or 321 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 171%
Structure weight / hull surface area: 30 lbs/sq ft or 147 Kg/sq metre
   Hull strength (Relative):

I also gave them pom-poms.

So, are you going to call them the "cheerleader" class?

What makes a ship a minesweeper? Misc weight? If yes how much is necessary?

And it seems you made the same mistake as me with my latest study: to change the engine year - or have you already finished the last engine tech?

Ahoj!
Yes, declaring miscelenous weight for minesweeping equipment makes a ship a minesweeper. How much it should weight - nobody really knows :), we guestimated it.

As to engine year - the year limits are on turbines. I give my minesweepers Verticle Triple Expansion Engines, not turbines.

Ahoj!
Corrected the design with proper engine year - 3 tonnes difference ...

As to "how much misc. weight makes a ship a minesweeper" - this is a N-verse copy of this ship, so I hope that it can carry the necessary equipment:
