How does a government frown upon a religion while allowing full religious freedom?

The United States has been touted for its religious freedoms for two centuries, but still the general public and to an extent the civilian government did not like Catholics in numbers for a century, and in more recent years Muslims have been more on the scornful end of the American freedom train.

Ask anyone who's visited the Middle East. It's legal to call God whatever name you want in Iraq (at least I know there were mosques, churches, and even a synagogue or two), but let some of the shop owners find out that you are a Christian and suddenly the prices are a little bit different for you.

That is the shopkeeper, not the Gov't at work ...

But yes, freedom to profess a religion and being frowned upon by Authorities are not exclusive, as e.g. British and Dutch Catholics can testify. Catholics in England were given full rights somewhere around 1880, IIRC.

Well the Anahuac did some impressive burning in their day. Not sure about the Inquasition in the present as to burning, but they seem rather...effective.

Mind you religion sometimes is only a side effect of racism. Jews the world over will understand that one. As will Irish and Japanese and probably any grouping of people when they are not in their own lands. And sometimes even when you are in "your" own lands...ask the native americans about that one.

The government allows that kind of discrimination to continue, though... so they are at least unofficially agreeing with it.
