Today the first train left Chicago's central station on it's way to North Mithlond. The Government has said this passage was very significant and have signalled a great improvement in the relations with the Rohimirran people.

New York 29th April

On this day with the absence of the King of our Great Nation, the late heir to the throne Prince Pascal Sauvage was buried in the grounds of the Royal Palace at Boston.

Rochester 3rd May

It was announced today that following a major hunt by the King's Cavalry, no arrest have been made and it seems that the gnag that is responsible for the death of the late heir to the throne, have got away. The Navies patrol boats will step up patrols on the Lake north of this city.

New York 8th May

This Paper conveys the grave sorrow of all the people of the UKA to the people of the Baltic League at this time of great national strife and sadness

Today, to great celebration the New Swiss Cruiser Pheonix and her cohort arrived in New York harbour. The ships were escorted in by a pair of destroyers, the planned escort, the frigate HAMS Troutbridge failed to show up, and has been reported as missing.

June 12th
New Bedford

The missing frigate HAMS Troutbridge returned to harbour today, after apparently going and mooring 60 miles north of where she should of met Pheonix. The crew have been threatend with a court's martial, but it is likely that this attempt to finally dispose of the navies most incompetent crew, will end in faiure.

July 18th
Rochester

On this day, it is this paper's sad duty to report on another awful massacre in the area east of Rochester. Four generations of one family, 24 people in all. This killing has been attributed to the same men who killed the late heir to the throne Prince Pascal Sauvage. The Kings Cavalry has been despatched to the area to help the search, and military officials are liasing with French border forces.

The last of the Norman class cruisers re-commissioned today. The fleet is now back up to strength and the admiralty have announced that they are pleased with the result of the refit

While passanger rail service to and from Chicago seem to be late on average, the people North Mithlond and many points in between have begun to use the rails for long distance travel. Freight traffic from the UKA to and through Rohan is still a little slow and rare as the UKA appears to have little dealing with Asia at this time and only shippments south to California and north into the Eastern Kingdom seem to come all the way to Mithlond.

With the apparent demise of the ACM and the turning rouge of several of its ships, the Admiralty has instructedd ships of the Merchant Navy to be on the lookout for ships bearing the flag of the ACM and under all circumstances to try to avoid contacy with them.

With the situation with the ACM becoming more clear the Second Battlesquadren has been ordered to prepare for convoy duty, if rouge ex ACM ships do start to carry out Piracy in the Atlantic.

October 18th
Rochester

On this day a shoot out occured between the King's Cavalry and what can be assumed to be a violent smuggling gang, just outside Rochester. Two of the gang were killed, for the injury of one cavalry man after his horse was hit. The identities of the two individuals has been confirmed, one of them was French Canadian, and well known on the otherside of the Border as a leading member of Quebec's strongest gang, while the otherman is a well known con-man from Rochester.

Rochester's mayor is dead! He was working in the city hall when a bomb went off in the buildings lobby. The Mayors office, on the first floor fell down into the lobby, the Mayor being killed by falling rubble. A curfew has been declared, and it is rumoured that several platoons of the first guards division are on their way to help the local authorities keep the peace.

October 28th
Oswego(near Rochester)

A Huge stash of liquor, tobacco and weapons has been found!!
The stash, found under a Wharehouse belonging to a local trader, is believed to be worth several million pounds, and has probably been smuggled across the great lake from French Canada.
Officials are saying that this stash does belong to the same gang that is causing much unrest in this region, but they are denying that official documents belong ing to the Government of French Canada have also been found.

New York - Vickers Dockyard

The UKA heavy engineering and shipbuilding firm, Vickers of New York has today revealed that it was they who designed the solution to the problems suffered by the stricken French Super-Battleship Greater Napoleon.
They warned the French military ,and naval designers in advance that the Greater Napoleon would have problems after they had learned the full story from an loselipped aid.

The solution is the addition of pontoons of high bouyancy cork fitted to the side of the hull.

Despite the fact that a UKA firm has been involved in the salvation of the disasterous French Battleship, Greater Napoleon. Admiral of the fleet Sir Hamish Percival-Percival, denounced the ship as an enormous waste of money, and materials. These materials he said could of been used to construct the 3 other Battleships, which could of come into service, before the megalomanic French ship construction had even sailed on trials.
It is thought that Lt Murray, Number 1 of the Frigate Troutbridge has been heard to say that the French Ship is as new, worse than his ship which in it's short career has rammed & sunk several merchantmen and is thus in quite a bad sight.

The Army today confirmed that 1st, 2nd and 3rd platoons of B company, First Guards Division, have been sent to the city to bolster the law enforcement authorities. Despite this extra firepower though, the violence hasn't stopped, and numerous innocent citizens have been injured in firefights. A number of Government offices have been attacked, wounding over a hundred people and claiming the lives of several Government workers.

The Government has advised all the UKA traders based in the Middle Kingdom, to either take steps to ensure their safety, or to leave the country altogether. Vessel's of the Royal American Merchant Navy, to avoid the coastal waters of that country and those of New Swiss.

The Royal Family has spent Christmas Day together, this only being made possible by the early standing down of the First Battlesquadren, in which Prince Steven, youngest son of the late Prince Pascal. The Family are expected to now travel up from the capital to New Bedford where they will spend the New Year.

Today the Armoured Cruiser Warwickshire and 2 D class Destroyers have been
despatched into the Atlantic to hunt for a reported raider on UKA fishing
ships.
The raider is suspected to be a ship of the ACM that has turned to piracy to
fund itself and possibly others in it's squadren.

4th January 1901

Unconfirmed reports are coming through that the Warwickshire & here consorts
have engaged an ACM trade protection cruiser. The ship is reported
as having been sunk, for the loss of the D class destroyer D5, and serious
damage to the Warwickshire. This paper will bring you more details of this
engagement as they become avaliable.

QUOTE

On the 4th of January 1901, the UKA Armoured Cruisr Warwickshire & 2 D class
Destroyers engaged an trade protection cruiser previously belonging to the
defunct Association Comercial de Mundo
in battle in the North Atlantic. The ex ACM ship was correctly identified as
the 'Swordfish', the first of Marlin class Heavy Cruisers to be finished at
the Azores ,with 4-8 inch
guns, and started to fire on the Warwickshire and her companions as
soon as they were spotted. At first the greater number of large calibre guns
aboard the 'Swordfish' gave that ship the advantage, and at the beginning of
the dual, the Warwickshire looked like she might be sunk.
After around half an hour of hard slugging from boths sides, the superior
armour on the UKA cruiser started to pay dividends, though her upperworks
were taking a battering, whilst trying to avoid fire from its two destroyer
consorts. Then disaster struck, the D class Destroyer D5 was hit by a fluke
shot during the failed torpedo run from one of the ACM ship's 6 inch guns.
The ship was blown apart moments latter as the main magazine ignited and exploded, leaving only a single survivor, the gunnery officer. While this was taking place though the Warwickshire's rear 9.2" turret scored a direct hit on Barbette of the ACM's ships forward turret, penetrating the armour, and plunging down into the bowls of the ship. The next salvo from Warwickshire brought a hit
amidships, the 'Swordfish' was seen to slow, with fires blazing all over and men
starting to abandon ship. Despite this though her rear turret barked out
defiantly for another 3 quarters of an hour before she ship finally slipped under the waves. In total the surviving UKA ships picked up 251 survivors from the 'Swordfish', many of these were suffering from the ill efects of the
freezing ocean.
These men have admitted that the ship had been sent out by the controller of
the Azores in order to 'gather funding'.
The Warwickshire and the surving destroyer D7 are now returning to New
Bedford where damage will be assesed and plans put together as to how to
refit the Warwickshire to return it to full service in the battleline.

6th January 1901

Today at the same time as the Warwickshire and D7 returned, the 2nd Battle
squadren departed the Anchorage in order to establish patrols on the UKA's
trade routes.
The damage to the Warwickshire is now plain for all to see. The upperworks
are riddled with many large calibre shell holes, and several guns are out of
commision. It is reported that around 150 men have been lost on the
Warwickshire, 99 on D5, and 18 on D7. D7 has fortunately only suffered a couple of smallcalibre hits in the upperworks, meaning to repair her will be a relatively simple and cheap operation. Warwickshire though will be fully
refitted and then brought up to the latest standards of ship construction.
The survivors from the 'Swordfish', being only of lower ranks, have been
offered asylum in the UKA, the only surving officer, the second in command
has been sent to the ACM embassy for safety. (mainly to keep him away
from the berived families of those who have perished in this battle.

Government of the Azores

The Government of the Azores feverntly denies the Acusations of the United
Kingdom of America, that the brand-new Heavy Trade Protection Cruiser
'Swordfish' had been sent out to 'gather funding' for the Government.
Rather they say that the cruiser had been sent out to take a Diplomat to
other countries in order to gain favour, and it was only on the inititive of
the crew to 'raise' some extra funds.

The King has offered his condolonces to the families of the men who have lost their lives in the naval engaement between the Warwickshire and the ex ACM ship 'swordfish'.

From analysis of the damage caused to the AC Warwickshire by the 'Swordfish', the best way of rebuilding all 4 County class ships. The rfitbuilds will add 6 inch secondaries, and increase the top speed to 23Knots, by using the latest technology avaliable to our ship builders. The Warwickshire will refitted to bring her back to full fighting capabilities, then the ships will be rebuilt one by one to make them suitable for full modern day service.

Several UKA diplomats have just returned from working in French Canada, dealing with the authorities there trying to catch the smuggling gang causing all the terror in the North. Some of them have talked of a large slip capable of taking a ship the size of the Greater Napoleon.

The New Swiss ship Phoenix has been blocked into it's berth, by a harbour tug was rammed & sunk by the tramp steamer SS New Bedford. The steamer was relatively unscaved, but the tug sank within 5 minutes. So far the tug hasn't been raised, and it is likely she will have to be broken up on site.

The Smugglers are cornered. After weeks of searching the smuggling gang that has caused so much trouble in the north of the country, has been trapped on a hill top farm near the border with French Canada. The farm has beem laid seige to by a company of the Kings Cavalry and a company from the 2nd Infantry Division. While only a farm, it seems to be well fortified.

As this gang have caused problems for the French as well, they have been invited to assist with the seige.

Scrapmen have begun the difficult task of cutting up the large harbour tug that has sank across the entrance to the berth that contains the NSS Phoenix. The work, which is slowed further by the changing tides, is expected to take at least a month.

Last Night the NSS Pegasus slipped her moorings, and left the harbour and the Nss Pheonix. The reason for sailing wasn't given, and though there have been reports of the ship being surrounded by a green mist before she dissapeared in the dark, these aren't certain.

Details have begun to filter through about the seige of the smuggler hold out which has come to be known as the Battle Of Hamburger Hill. The Hill farm which gained it's name from the Hamburger family who came to the UKA 60 years ago from the Baltic region, which ran the farm before they got killed and the farm was being used as a stronghold of the most violent smuggling gang in the northern region.

The siege was made by two Companies of the Kingdom's army. One from the Kings Cavalry, and one from the 2nd Infantry division re-enforced by a Division of French Zouaves

The farm was well defended by the smugglers. They posseded a New Swiss made Gatling Gun, and a pair of ex Navy 5inch muzzle loaders.
On top of this powerful arsenal they also possed many army surplus weapons, in particular old rifles.
With the arrival of the fearsome Zouaves preparations were made to attack. They had brought with them a battery of 155mm howitzers,
in order to pound the smugglers into submission, but they stayed strangly quiet before the attack. At 8am on the 6th of February
the Zouaves moved into position, to the North & East of the hill, while the company of the 2nd infantry held the West, and the Kings Cavalry
blocked the South.
On the given signal a mightly roar was to be heard right across the field as the Zouaves, and then the 2nd Infantry charged the hill. The effectiveness of the weapons at the
smugglers disposal was incredible and aweful. The Gatling gun, positioned so it was facing the main French assault, proved too much for the Zouaves, mowing down many men a time. In their fist
assault, the Zouaves reportedly lost 35% of their total strength. Many soldiers ran up the hill treading all over their late comrades.

The 5 inch guns also took their toll, the improvised grape shot proving deadly to French & American alike, many men on the Western, and eastern flanks falling prey to this lethal weapon.
After several Waves, the company of the King's Cavalry joined in the attack, charge after charge the brave men made, but the death toll was high, too hgih and they were pulled back.
The Zouaves were having no more luck on their side of the hill, though with both of the 5inch guns were out of action with blown barrels, the smugglers were still holding out against the
full weight of the combined attack. After a full 8 hours of fruitless assaults, the men pulled back and the order was finally given to the Howitzer battery to 'flatten the farm'.
Within minutes of the guns opening up, the farm was no more and the smugglers were vapourised. Many of the bodies that are strewn on the slopes up the hill are lacking in many parts, be they arms
legs, and even in a few cases heads.

This victory has been costly and has shown to both the French & American chiefs of staff that modern warfare is deadly, and highly costly.

The Crew of the NSS Phoenix have departed for home aboard the passenger ship SS Normandy. They have taken with them anything small enough to strip & carry from the ship. Left behind are a small Skeleton crew & a couple of guards. The Normandy will arrive in Phoenix in about 2 months time.

The SS Normandy has arrived in French Cameroon at the end of it's atlantic crossing. A New face aboard the ship in arrival in Cameroon, was that of the former Minister Rimauld, who is to become the French Ambasador to the New Swiss.

Led by the Ice Breaker Polar Bear, the French Liner Athene conveying the person of The French Premierre Jardan, entered New York harbour today to much fanfair. Once Docked, Jardan disembarked from the Liner and was greated by Prime Minister Sir William Gladstone, and Foreign Minister Sir Robert Peel. He then got aboard an open Royal Coach, and was conveyed to the Royal Palace to meet his majesty, King Harold VII. All the way throught the streets of New York, ticker tape rained down onto the coach.

Alliance!!!

Our Great Nation has signed an alliance with the Glorious French Empire. This treaty has already been demonstrated in the Battle of Hamburger Hill. This treaty will also bring a new security to our great nation, with it comes the knowledge that the world's greatest power is friends with us.
This unification of our two great nations has not come about, without much heart searching, after all the French were once our enemies, but we have seen that they are now very much our friends.

The Foreign Ministry has announced that the Engineering company Ruston Bucyrus is to begin work on developing a massive type of steam shovel. Designs for 15000HP steam turbines have been passed from the admiralty to Ruston Bucyrus, the design intended to power ships is being vanted as the powerplant for the giant excavators the UKA firm is to build for the Great Canal.

Several members of the skeleton crew aboard the trapped New Swiss ship Pheonix, have been caught attempting to smuggle opium into the UKA & aboard the ship. They have thus acted in a way that is not fit of guests in the UKA and have been arrested. The Governement is considering what action to take about this event.

March 27th

The Pheonix has been interned, and her crew placed in Government accomodation until further notice.

How in the world did sailors on board a ship got hold of opium?

The UKA wishes to remain neutral, and this is very hard with a tub of old iron that belongs to one of the warring parties docked in our capital. Worse still when the crew of the aforementioned ship have been caught breaking the law.

nb the Crime of smuggling currently carries the death penalty in the UKA.

You can't smuggle opium into the UKA and onboard the ship at the same time. If they are smuggling into the UKA, they would have to come from the ship which as been away from Asia for how long now? If they are smuggling onto the ship, then if came from the UKA, in which case they would not be smuggling anything into the nation, and opium is not a controlled substance in 1901 (at least not in the United States historically if I recall until 1914) as it is used in many medicines at this time (and still today actually).

Could someone explain why a warship of another nations has been detained in port for two months time? A tug does not take two months to breakup, and the New Swiss are hogging a potentally profitable pier. The local businesses are loosing money here with this warship and no freight moving. If nothing else, blast it out of the way.

I think it has something to do with the UKA/French alliance. My ship is blockaded under mysterious circumstances. The UKA/France attacks "smugglers" using "swiss" weapons. Then my own sailors are accused of "smuggling"

I smell a rat, a big one.

Unfortunately you must deal with it as cooly as possible, and as in character as possible. If that is what their law says then that is what is done....as there may be no international law.

The tug sank in a warm spell in January (no ice anyhow), but the American winter has set in hard. The Tug is now cleared away (work finished april 1st), and the New Swiss are asked to now remove their ship, towing can be arranged if required.

As for the opium, it is likely that it may of been a rowing boat out to the 3 mile limit job (away from the city), they were only caught when they tried to take the stuff onboard ship in the Dockyard, equivilant to crossing a small border.

OOC: Blowing up a tug next to the stern of another nations warship could be dodgy.

To the outrage of many citizens the government has instructed the customs authorities to drop the charges of smuggling brought against the crew of the NSS Pheonix. The Ship will be released at 4pm today, and is instructed to leave the harbour within 72hours, inorder that the UKA may be able to restate it's neutrality.
In a seperate incident, a tramp steamer, loaded with opium has bee detained by Customs, it appears that some of it's registered cargo is missing.

Outraged at his own Government, the King has called for the rearrest of the New Swiss sailors who were reportedly caught smuggling last month. The King has had this to say

Well that brings up the question, is there an international law? Because if there isn't then this is legal (its wrong, but legal within the UKA). The usual method of overturning such things was to place a warship off the coast to remind them that wars start this way. This is the age of battleship diplomacy afterall. However, being an Atlantic Power, and the New Swiss being a Pacific Power...getting big guns to the UKA will prove difficult aside from the understaffed Phoenix.

Harbour Front,New York

With a fresh crew, and fully re-supllied the NSS Pheonix left the Harbour in New York at 11am sharp today. She leaves behind the members of the Skeleton crew who are to face trial for smuggling.

Also at the harbour front today several large kits of parts were being loaded onto specially chartered cargo ships. The kits are actually the first batch of dragline excavators bound for the Great Canal project, though these are not powered by the roumoured 15000hp turbines. Each has a more modest 2000hp, and can move 25tons of spoil in one bite.

With the arrival of the Liner HMSS Queen Wilhemenia in the Harbour, their is much activity at the docks. Marquise de Reux was met at dockside by Foreign Minister Sir Robert Peel, he geeted her in the name of King Harold. Lady de Reux rode with Sir Peel in a Royal coach drawn by 8 pure white horses with an escort of the King's Cavalry in full dress uniform. The other passengers will, once they have passed through the customs formalities they wil be asked where they wish to settle & then shall be directed there

The shipyards of New York, and to be fair the ocean accessable yards all around the Kingdom are even more a hive of activity than they are usually. The keels of many new Armoured cruisers have been laid down. Parts for these ships have already begun to arrive, apace, and it seems that almost the entire industrial might of the Kingdom is being thrown into the construction.

April 15th
In a joint inititive with French Scientists & the French Government, the King has announced the commencement of construction work on an aluminium production plant. This plant will increse the UKA's industrial production and allow more work to be carried out on ships.

After over a month docked in the French naval dockyard in madagascar, the SS Normandy has sailed, reportedly south West towards the Orange Republic. The cause for the delay has been engine troubles, one of the ships main steam pipes reportedly sprang a number of serious leaks.

Dock Foreman's office, Naval Dockyard, Gjoa Haven.

Siting at his desk, dock foreman, Bert Harris was enjoying what to him was an average day's work, in other words very little indeed. He enjoyed his job, maintaing the Navy's Fleet of Ice Breakers,
the largest ship in the squadren was the Armed Ice Breaker Polar Bear, of the Artic class, the sister ship of which had been reduced to fleet reserve.
Into the office strolled a naval officer, obviously not from that area of the nation, he was red in the cheeks and his hands were verging on the side of being blue with cold. "Morning Sir, what can I do for you?"
Bert said, hurridly dropping his newspaper & attempting to hide the beer bottles that sprwled across his desk. "Morning Mr Harris, I'm Captain Markam" the officer replied "I have with me designs & supply orders
for a new design of armoured cruiser for the Navy of the United Kingdom of America."
"Well, what do you expect me to do with them then?" Bert stated sarcastically, smiling at the captain wryly. "You are to build the first one!" Captain Markam replied, his voice not swaying from the strict
regimented tone that was instilled into him at the officer training college.
"You must be joking, there hasn't been a big ship built here in 6 years, many of the workers have got other jobs, most don't even turn up for work!" Bert stated, staring in bewilderment at the Captain."Why would
the navy build ships up here, aren't there plenty of yards down south?"
"Yes Mr Harris, there are yards down south, but those slips are busy with the half-sisters of the ship you are to start here. Those ships are for France." Markam stated. "Further more, in answer to your problems with labour, all the men you
need will be at your disposal. These new ships are of top priority to the navy, they are seen as the future of the Cruiser squadrens."
"That's what was said about the River class ships, what makes these new ships better?" Bert asked, not sure why the navy kept changing standards. He stood up, walked over to the window, and looked
out on the large slip in the mid distance, very much over grown with bushes. "Look for yourself, Mr Harris, these ships can go far faster than the River's, are better armoured, and all for 1500tons lighter."
The Naval officer replied, walking over to join Harris at the window. "And all that is thanks to the great advances made in propulsion technology!"
"Ahhh, yes turbines, far lighter and more powerful than ordinary engines, they will prove saviours of the Navy I'm sure" Mr Harris said with a smile on his face."Ok then, when does the Navy want this ship, laid down
"You will lay down the first ship on the first of April, you should be able to add 500tons a month and launch her in mid November." Markam stated, removing a piece of paper from his brief case.
" All the plans and material orders you require are here."
"Thank you sir. I will order my men to work preparing the slip" Harris said, hoping he could find enough men to clear away the undergrowth. "Hope your Journey back too New York is a good one."
"I hope so too, it's gonna be a long way back." Captain Markam said, leaning out of the door " Goodbye Mr Harris, I will see you at the launch."

April 30th

Dock Foreman's office, Naval Dockyard, Gjoa Haven.

Bert Harris's office was busy, there were papers strewn everywhere, and drawings spread out across the desk. "You know," He said talking to his assistant "Gjoa Haven has never been this busy, a train arrives everyday bringing
more equiptment and materials to build this cruiser."
"Yes bert, your right!" The assistant replied, looking out of the window. "We had another 4 wagons of steel channel in this morning, and the templates for the barbettes have arrived."
Bert walked across to the door, and opened it just as another load of papers & drawings arrived. "And another thing, have you ever seen so much paper work" the assitant added.
"No, I haven't! This place always used to be quiet, and the work was easy." Bert stated, leaning against the door. "Now we've got a big ship to build, and a budget like we've never seen!"
"How fast are these tubs again?" the assistant asked. "23-24 knots I think, though the variants being built in the south are faster still!"Bert replied, scrambling for the appropriate piece of paper
His assistant walked over to the door, and went to leave. "You know Bert, I think that Captain was right, these ships will bring the Navy up to date, anyway I've got to get to work."
"I'll see you later then", Bert said out of the door after his assistant."Cup of tea in a while eh?" He wandered back over to his desk just as the phone began to ring.
"Hello"He said, dropping into his chair."You what? 165mm guns? I've got no reference to those here." Bert looked for the list of parts he might 'recieve in error', he found it eventually, underneath his mug.
"Ah, got it any guns of Metric calibre are intended for the Ville class cruisers, not the Town class. Right send em back to New York, let the admiralty sort it out!". Putting the phone down, he lent back in his chair, and went back
to his crossword.

Minus Minister Rimauld, the SS Normandy has sailed from the Orange republic. She is said to heading for Tahiti. The Captain was unable for comment, but it is thought that after Tahiti, the SS Normanday will proceed to complete a circumnavigation of the globe.

Having finished sorting through the papers of the Late Heir elect Prince Pascal Sauvage. The Government has found papers wwhich refer to a deal done in the Azores about 6months before his death. These papers document the Hawaii Islands as having been sold to the UKA. The government was piped to the post in actually finishing it's claim to Hawaii by the Prince's death. Now having finished sorting his papers the Government has been overtaken by other event's in this matter.
The Government are unhappy that a lawful claim to the Islands has been overun by the underhand dealing of the New Swiss.

The 5th infantry division has sailed aboard the charted passenger ships SS Brooklyn & SS New Bedford. They are being sent to be trained by the French forces based in Brazil, and the ships will meet up with the Naval force also on it's way to Brazil. It is hoped that this training will better equipt our armed forces for combat in all conditions.

The Squadren of ships belonging to the UKA has arrived in Brazil. The squadren is being refueled, and has been joined by an number of Government chartered civilian coal ships. The 5th Infantry division has interestingly not disembarked from the ships, and they are expected to sail south with the rest of the squadren tomorrow (the 4th).

The World tour fleet has arrived, and is in the process of refueling prior to sailing for tahiti.

9th July

As the tension in the French parliament grows, the reasons for it grow daily at the dockside. The fast cruisers being built are more able than anything France currently has. The Government has also said that the ships will be completed on schedule. Several high ranking officials have commenced chasing the paper trail in the UKA.

Bert Harris sat his desk ponderingwhat to do with the last half hour of his working day. Suddenly the door was flung open and two French officers walked in, "Monsieur Harris" one of them bellowed, "We are
here to investigate the purchase by our Glorious navy of the Ville class Fast Cruisers".
"You must be mistaken sir." Bert Stuttered, "All we are building here is the UKA variant." "There is no mistake monsieur!" The other Officer stated bluntly "Our sources have told us that it is here that the papers concerning the deal are being stored." Bert looked quizically at first the officers, then at his desk, then back at the officers. In his mind he ran through all of the papers that had flowed into his office since the visit of Captain Markham back in March, he could not recall seeing any official
paperwork relating to the sale of ships to the French. "I'm sorry Gentlemen, nothing springs imediately to mind. What do you want to know anyway?" Bert said, hoping desperatly for a clue.
"Our Government is keen to know whether it was the late Minister De Creme or ex-Minister Rimauld who did the deal." The officer who was first to speak replied. Bert looked up, and having spent some
moments considering this decided he needed to know more. "What date would this be sir?" He asked.
"From our information we have been able to assertain that the deal was done in late February." The second officer stated.
"Well that will help, but not really today." Bert said, "You see I finish in quarter of an hour, but tomorrow will be a different matter."
"Very well monseuir we will return in the morning to continue our inquiry" The first officer said, and the pair left.
Thank goodness Bert thought, "I better get home and have a bit of a think.

"Well, really all of them!" Bert stated nervously, "All these papers relate in some way or another to the sale, and there seems to be no order to them."
"Well then, we better get started, our Government is waiting for answers" the other French officer replied. "Please hand me that file there."
"Here you go." Bert said, passing across the folder. "I'll just go and get you Gentlemen a cup of tea."
" Coffee!! Not Tea!!" The Senior officer corrected sharply.

2 hours latter

"How many more files are there to check now?" Bert asked as he placed another pile of papers pack in it's folder.

"Can I see that?" Bert said, "Ah that makes sense, Vice-Admiral Greenwich. He is the Navies best deal maker, he's presently at the Peace talks in the far east."
"This man is a good salesman then, no wonder Rimauld signed!" The junior officer. " Anyway Monseuir we have troubled you long enough, we will take a copy of these papers, and I hope that we meet again,
it is in better circumastances." With that they left, leaving Bert scratching his head, and wondering where he left his mug of tea!

Prime Minister Sir William Gladstone. has today announced that it has been proposed to hold a royal fleet review to celebrate the wedding of heir to the throne Prince Michael to Anna Roberts, Daughter of the Earl of Boston. The Wedding,will be held on June 15th, 1902, and it is reportedly the Prince's pleasure to invite representatives from all nations to the ceremony. The fleet review has been decided upon beacause the Prince serves in the Navy. Ships from all nations are invited, and the Review will be held in New York Harbour.

OOC: I don't forsee any explosions or freak events resulting in loss of life, so this will be a safe event to come to.

The world tour fleet has resumed it's trip today, and is said to be once more sailing west. The Crews reportedly enjoyed their stay in Hawaii, and say that they were made most welcome by the local people.

September 25th

The 5th Cruiser squadren has entered the pacific Ocean on it's trip to visit Rohan. The new ships have aparently behaved well on the long voyage, and the crews are said to be adapting well the modern turbines aboard the Town class Light Cruisers.

Work has been started on building the first 4 Destroyers of the new turbine powered F Class. The Admiralty plans to build these 600t ships in large numbers, and thus provide for the needs of the fleet for several years to come.

The Merchant Navy tramp steamer Barnard Castle limped into harbour yesterday after being severely damaged 2 days earlier. The ship had been caught in a vicous atlantic storm, on her way to Essaylien. This explanation though does not provide a reason as to why part of the ships load of Timber is missing.

The French Battleship Devastation, which has been rebuilding in the UKA has been floated out of Dry dock and is being redied to make the journey to the Grand Canal. All but her front main guns have been removed, and she has had a large dragline excavator to the stern (mounted on the rear turret's barbette). This is powered by a 15000HP turbine set, and the bucket can move 60tons in one bite.

Admiral Hayden: "Signal officer; Cheif, belay those orders!!!!"
Captain Beatty:"Why sir?"
Admiral Hayden:"There are civilians in danger over there Captain. We are able to help them, and we shall!"
Luitenant Green"But sir, the King's orders clearly state "

Today the World tour fleet, now under the command of the recently promoted Comodore Beatty has arrived in Jakarta Harbour to much pomp and ceremony. The Dutch fleet escorted the ships in, and has granted the use of it's refueling facilities. The Fleet is expected to stay in Jakarta for 10 days allowing the ships crews, and the soldiers aboard the passenger ships to rest, and enjoy the local facilties, each having recieved a bonus payment as recompence for their long time at Sea. The Comodore has stated that he is going to open His Flagship, the Battleship HAMS Ocean to the public between the 21st, and the 28th.

Cunard has announced today that the French Government has purchased the companies largest liner the 21knot Nordmandy. The ship, currently sailing for Indochina with the World tour fleet, will remain in Indochina after the fleet has left.

The Normandy's sister ship, the RMS New York will be completed in April next year, and will imediately start it's bid to grasp the Blue Ribbon.

The 5th Cruiser squadren has departed from North Mithlond, and will sail around the tip of South America and return to New Bedford to be joined by the second pair of Town class light cruisers.

The Ships will spend Christmas docked in French Brazil, having refueled at the Pacific end of the Great Canal works. They will arrive in Brazil on December the 20th.

The World tour fleet has arrived in French Indochina, and is being prepared for the journey home that will commence in the New Year. The SS Normandy has been transfered to the French Government, and the troops she has been carrying have been returned to French command.

UKA Mission to the Great Canal
1st Annual Report, 1st March 1902

The Mission has the honour to be able to report on the following:

1)Control of disease
2)Progress in Construction
3)Defences of Canal
4)UKA Excavators

1)Control of Disease

Since the commencement of construction of the canal, many hundreds of workers have died from a terrible plauge of Malaria. The Institute d'pasteur have attempted to control and combat this disease in a number of ways. It is now the hounour of this Mission to announce that they have enjoyed great success in combatting the Malaria, and the mosquito's that carry it, as a result many hundreds more lives have been saved and work on the canal has not ground to a halt at the hands of nature. The UKA American Medical Organisation has thus despatched a team to the canal zone in order to gain as much knowledge about this disease and the preventative methods as possible, so that similar practices might be used to combat disease in the UKA.

2)Progress in Construction

The Canal works are now proceeding well on the Carribean coast, with the canal stretching out towards the Istmus, where a set of very large locks are to be constructed. The original plan to cross the mountain range on a rotating lift, with massive pontoons, though cost has caused this plan to be abandoned. On the Pacific coast, the works have proceeded at a lesser rate, but are expected to increase in speed with the delivery of several large excavators constructed by the UKA firm Ruston Bucyrus. One great area of progress at the Carribean end of the canal has been in the construction of a great harbour to accomodate ships waiting to pass through the canal. The Canal is proceeding to plan, and will be completed on schedule.

3)Defences of Canal

The French Government has recently commissioned the construction of a number of forts in order to provide defense for the canal, on top of this there will be ships protecting each end of the canal.

4)UKA Excavators

The UKA company Ruston Bucyrus has developed a number of large excavators that are helping to accelerate the work on the canal. On top of the land bound diggers developed by the company, the company has provided the parts to convert a pair of obscelete French Battleships to excavator barges. The First of these ships, renamed Gargantuan is working at the canal.

Today New York Harbour sits full of warships of nations from all around the World. Included among they're number are the French Battleship Verite and the Grand Columbian Battleship Resolouto.
Following the Wedding of the Heir to the throne Prince Michael, to Anna Roberts, daughter of the Earl of Boston, the happy couple attended the review in a pure white coach. Having viewed several of the ships, and having been welcomed aboard the Battleship Ocean, the couple sailed for New Bedford, where they will spend they're Honeymoon.

I went to the Canadian shipyard where the great liner is being build. And great it is. The biggest ship in the world, even bigger than DeCreme's beached whale, Greater Napoleon.

The keel isn't even finished, but it's already over 200 meters long. And thanks to the money from your office, the new town of Halifax rising along this great endeavor is the most modern in the world. Monsieur Charles McKim is doing a great job leading this project.
Unfortunatly, Monsieur Eifel is requesting to go there to, as the statue in St Louis is progressing on scedule. That's the only shadow on your great plan. It's so great all influencial architects and engineers want to participate.

A second old French Battleship has arrived in New York in order to be rebuilt as a Large Digger barge for work on the Great Canal. This ship will be like the Gargantuan (previously Devastation) in most ways, but a number of improvements to her digging equiptment will increase her capacity.

Monsieur Palpaté, I wonder what your plans are with the old aft turrets of Courbet and Devastation.

Premier Jardan, I was planning to use them for the fortress on the atlantic side of the Great canal.
Otherwise we could use them for the defence of our new class 4 slip in Halifax

It would be a waste to reuse those turrets on a new ship, but they are very suited for a coastal defence battery.

I agree Monsier Palpaté. Use them for Halifax, the great Canal needs something grander. Tres Grand ,merci. How is the work progressing on the new large guns for the battleships? Those 340's never have shown their power actualy, and tests didn't work to well.

The research on the new 305's 52 caliber shows very good results, but the shellweight/muzzle velocity tests are not conclusive. If it's up to the weapon developers , they want a 340 or larger, with a very high muzzle velocity, if this means a lighter shell then they opt for that. But my dad always told me, "if something doesn't work, use a bigger hammer"

So, what do you advice, we only have a few weeks before I get replaced, and non of the polls shows any conclusive winner for the next elections. Even those new fangled royalists have a fair chance.

Sir, what I would advice is bigger shells and higher muzzle velocity. But that would be too expensive. Our scientists are working on this.

The Admiralty has today confirmed that the navy has taken over 4 old French Coastal Battleships as down payment for a number of ships to be constructed for France in the UKA for the French Navy. The Old ships will likely be scrapped in order to free up the materials for the completion of the Town class Armoured Cruisers.

The Commander of the Navy has recorded his astonishment at the decision by the Admiralty to Sell the 4 County class Armoured Cruisers. One ship, HAMS Yorkshire has been sold to Peru, while the other 3 have been sold to the Middle Kingdom.

He stated that he didn't understand why good ships were being sold off, when they could be rebuilt for further service.

Patrols from the Cavalry Barracks in Pierre has reported that during an operation to disarm Native Americans who roam freely in some areas of the Wwest of the country, a fight broke out. The Cavalry men carrying out the operation reportedly came under fire from the middle of the Native camp, and responded with Heavy fire. It is thought that 10 Cavalry men were killed and 25 wounded, while 120 Natives died, many being caught in the crossfire.

The Great Western Railway has today reported that while working a Pan-Ocean Mail Train, one of its engines, the City of Truro, was recorded as travelling at a maximum speed of 102.4 Miles Per Hour. The service, the Pan-Ocean Mails, is one of several competing services attempting to set the best time for the delivery of Mails from the Pacific Coast to the Atlantic Coast. City of Truro was taken off the train at Chicago Grand Central, where another engine took over for the run to New York.

Major General Howard stalked the staging as he sumommed the words for his speech, in the twentieth row back, Lance Corpral Jones of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Infantry Division whispered to the man next to him; "I wish he'd bleedin get on with it, it's bloody freezing out here."
"Silence in the Ranks!" Snarled a Sergent a few feet away. Up on the staging, General Howard stepped up to the megaphone and began to speak. "Men of the United Kingdom of America, you have already all served with great distinction in this conflict." Cheers rose from parts of the assembly, in other areas there was silence; "You have come a long way to get here today, but that distance has come at a cost, the 6th Infantry is now shattered, and will be relieved;" Further back faint cheers rose up from survivors of the 6th Infantry who realised that they would be returning home.
General Howard waited a few moments, thinking over how the already weakend 6th Infantry had bee ambushed by a larger force of Eastern kingdom forces, and had had to fight for its survival, only being saved by superior firepower. "Despite this, we must go further, and there are more Battles that must be won in order for this war to end honourably for us. I therefore emplore you to continue to stand together, and march on for the Glory of your Kingdom & for the Glory of your Regiments." Pausing once more, Howard simply looked at the men, standing silent, waiting for further words from their leader. Taking a Dead Breath, he made his closing statement. "My orders for you are this, Reach Anchorage and Conquor the Eastern Kingdom. GOD SAVE THE KING!"
"GOD SAVE THE KING!" Came the thunderous roar back from the troops.

Then as the Dismiss order was given, Lance Corpral Jones once more turned to his mate and uttered the immortal words, "They don't like it up 'em! They do not like it!" The Sergent, still listening was heard to mutter under his breath "Then you bloody give it them then!" And with that the force moved back to it's respective posts.

More like 40 days actually, marching at between 2.5 to 3Mph for 10 hours each day. In reality the advance will now slow considerably, mainly cozI except toughter resitstance now.

Ahoj!
Have you ever trekked across snow covered mountains?
Of which 6-7 hours are in daylight?
And with somebody shooting at them from time to time?
IMO in such conditions 3 miles A DAY would be a good advance figure.

When thinking about marchng distance, add an hour or two in the morning for the men to get their food, dissessamble their tents, arrange themselves into marching columns, etc. And another 2 hours at the end of the march for the preparation of camp and food.

25-30 miles a day is a good result for a fully mounted force.

Marching 25 to 30 miles a day in military kit is not feasible. Particularly over a long span, and during spring - which is the time period (April - May) in question. It's going to be cool, and fairly wet.

I feel sorry for the Normans once they run into the mountains, a good guerilla defence can really hurt them there.

If the EK has really lost 35,000 men, it will be in dire straits as it represents nearly 20% of its armed forces.

We need a good map of the region. Anybody have one?

Rohan would not like the Eastern Kingdom overrun either. Treaty or no, this heavyhanded attack was unwarrented and rather unjustified. If the Swiss situation in Anchorage is relatively resolved or at least at place where negotiations are working, the UKA's assualt should hold.

OOC: Just noting, if it was missed, in the Rohirrm news the Mark has mustered its armies again due to the multiple crisis near Rohirrim and Gondorian lands. (around April 29, 1904) This means the Mark will try to build up its army again to its pre-war level (add 11 more corps) by 1905. It was also stationed two Armies on the Missouri River in case they are needed. (around June 5, 1904) These two armies consist of 11 corps equivalents, 7 of which being cavalry.

Just thought I should mention that in case it got lost in the news.

The News that a Peace Treaty has been agreed to by the Government has been met by a mixed reaction in the City. Many people are unhappy at what is described as meddling by the New Swiss, and a violent mob has ram-sacked their Embassy. For the families of soldiers, the peace has come as a relief, with many soldiers wives stating that they cannot wait for the return of their Husbands.

Somewhere off the coast of Gran Columbia, near the Brazilian border, a lone Frigate sails slowly south......

"Left hand down a bit," echoed across the Bridge from the Navigating officer, one sub Lt Phillips. "Left hand down a bit, it is sir" came the solemn reply from the Helm, where CPO Pertwee stood wearily. "Mr Phillips Sir." Pertwee inquired, "Yes Chief? came the haughty reply. "Mr Phillips Sir, are you sure that we are just 5 miles North of Boston?" The Chief looked worried, and he had right to do so. "Don't bother asking Chief, how noddy thinks we could have sailed South for 3months, and only been patrolling the North Atlantic, I'll never know." Came the voice of Lt Murray, the 1st Officer. "Hey, I resent that!" Phillips shouted, "Love-able Leslie knows best, and I say in 5 miles we turn right into Boston Harbour."

meanwhile at the Starboard lookout position

"I don't like this Taffy!" Came a moping voice from (Un)able Seaman Johnson, "I don't like it at all!" Leading Seaman (Taffy) Goldstein wasn't listening to his friend, he was looking Aft, all of a sudden he shouted. "Starboard Lookout reporting, several armed canoes are behind us!"

Up on the Bridge, Taffy's shout's startled Sub Lieutenant Phillips into action, "Full ahead both Chief!" He shouted, "Full ahead both it is Sir," Came an equally urgent reply from Pertwee "Armed canoes, since when did the Navy have them!" Lt Murray stood upright now, and un-calmly replied, "They don't! Mr Phillips, are you sure we are nearly off Boston?" Before Phillips could reply, the Captain, Commander Bell entered the Bridge, "Hallo Chaps, whats all the commotion about?" He looked ragged, his uniform covered in cake crums, and a piece of toast stuck on his trousers. "We just spotted some armed canoes sir, and we have taken evassive manouvers." lt Murray explained, keen for the Captain to leave the Bridge immediately. "What, Canoes! Goodbye Chaps, I'm going to lock myself in my Cabin till they give the all clear!" The Captain replied, and with a clatter of something breaking, he left.

10minutes sailing latter.

"Right we should be nearing Boston, boy it is dark." Sub lt Phillips stated intruiged. "If it is Boston at all, even the lighhouse light is out!" Came a worried reply from Pertwee. "Stop argueing Chief! Now, we are going to turn right, ....... Now!" Phillips replied. "Turn right it is sir!" Came the Chiefs reply.

An area of South Manhatten has been sealed off, and declared off limits after an number of people have died in the district from a mysterious disease, which is now spreading the rapidly from house to house. The Source is suspected to be a New Swiss Merchant who was the first to die, bearing the symptons of the Disease. Could this quarantine notice be delayed a bit? It seems just a bit too early unless you want to create your own center of epidemic. And in 1904, a few people dying of diseases will not make much concern, to act too harshly.

Alikchi was, respondible, for a fairly deadly outbreak in Wesworld that effected at least three nations directly, and about five others indirectly with much loss of life and a secondary war started from the threat of the outbreak. I beleive this is what Rocky is refering to in the above quote.

We return now to the Bridge of HAMS Troutbridge

"Mr Phillips, if Boston harbour is dead ahead, where are all the lights?" lt Murray asked concerned. "They must have had a power cut!" Was the simple, and still haughty reply from sub lt Phillips, "Now Chief, lets take her in quick, and get ashore before the Mess closes!"
"Take her in quick it is sir!" the Chief replied, looking very uneasy.
Suddenly a shout broke the tension, "That isn't Boston, it looks like a Jungle ashore sir, there is no harbour!" came Taffy's voice. All that came from the Bridge was the confused voice of Sub lt Phillips saying "What?!?!?" and the Chief hollering, "Get Down!!!!!"

CRAASSHHHHHHHH!

The ship lurched to a halt and the crew recovered. "We're hard aground sir!" said the Chief, "Looking over the side, there can't be much more than 8feet of water here, we aren't getting off!" Luitenant Murray stood considering the facts for a moment then gave the order, "Cheif prepare to Abandon Ship, we'll take our chances in the boats I think."
"Aye Aye Sir," came the voice of Pertwee, already halfway down the bridge steps.

Aboard the Protected Cruiser Casanare...

By dawn Casanare and the torpedo-boat Cali were off New Amsterdam, neither having detected the reported interloper. A blinker light from the town's small depot flashed out a challenge which Casanare duly met with the correct response.

The shorebound light then strobed again, and the captain awaited the new information impatiently. "Sir, message from the depot. They have civilian reports of strange noises and men in boats in the following area...", the signal rating reported.

Marching to the chart table, the captain examined a map of the area. The location was perhaps a half hour away at flank speed, though an odd choice for a raid of any kind. He'd have landed troops closer to New Amsterdam so the marines weren't exhausted when they arrived.

"Query the depot about their alert status", the captain instructed.

"They're at general quarters and the town militia is being turned out", came the reply.

"Good, good", the captain murmured. It was possible that the landing was actually targetting some location west of New Amsterdam, but he didn't want to discount the possibility that the town was the genuine target and the landing merely poorly situated.

"Sound for General Quarters. Relay the message to Cali, and instruct them to follow us. Helm, come round to two-eight-five and ring for all ahead full."

"Bridge, port lookout reporting - possible ship's mast close ashore, twenty degrees off the port quarter."

Casanare's captain and executive officers reached for field glasses and stepped out onto the wing. The lookout pointed and the officers raised the glasses. A pole mast and crowsnest was outlined against the lightening sky. "Well done", the captain remarked. "Went right past her, I see. Helm, come around to zero nine zero. Guns, I want all batteries trained on that ship."

The cruiser circled about, trailed by the Cali.

"Keep your eyes sharp. I want to know the first hint of activity on that ship", the captain declared.

"She's in pretty close, and up by the bow a bit. I think she's aground", the XO remarked.

"That might explain the noises the locals reported", the captain mused. "Makes things easier for us, too. Helm - reduce to all ahead one quarter. No sense in overshooting him before we have some light to work with."

Minutes passed, and the sky grew brighter. Nonetheless, Casanare had to come around again. "Looks like a large torpedo-boat. I don't see an ensign", the XO observed.

"Any signs of activity?"

A chorus of negative responses answered the captain's query. "Forward gun - fire a warning shot well wide." A few seconds passed, and then the forward 14 cm gun barked. The shot was slightly over, kicking up a plume of mud and vegetation a hundred yards off the mystery ship's port bow.

It was like an anthill had been kicked over. Figures boiled out of hatches and milled about. "Are those...?", the captain began.

"They look like Anahuac", the XO replied, bewildered. "But the ship doesn't look Anahuac. I'm going through Jean's and it looks American. Yes, Troutbridge class - see? Two seventy-fives, two torpedoes."

"But those are Anahuac", the captain. "Did the Americans give her to them, or did they take it?"

"Either way, Captain, I think they're bringing that aft gun to bear", the XO observed in a tight voice.

"Very well. Guns - weapons free! Trash that bastard!", the captain snapped.

In a smoke filled room in North Mithlond a mixed bunch of men sat around a table talking. Around them were stacked boxes and boxes of rifles, revolvers, grenades etc, and in the middle of the table sat a sword which bore a distinct resemblance to the Sword of Narsil. After a few minutes another man entered the room, he was regimented, and having taken his place at the head of the table, spoke. "Gentlemen, I trust that you now understand why I have called you all here this evening." A series of murmurs reverberated around the room, followed by a wave of nodding heads. "Good! Excellent in fact. Now then, I must warn you I expect loyalty till death, any attempt to double cross either myself, or one of your number will result in an untimely demise." He looked out across the table, there before him sat 2 former riders of the Mark, two former Zouaves, and a number of other men, who all duly nodded. "I am glad that we understand each other. We will meet again when the moon is new, till then, bonsoir."

The night of the new moon.

The group stood in the shade of the Great Museum of the Mark, the leader, signalling with his left hand counted down to 1 as 2 Guards walked by, and within a few moments both were heaped in a corner. That done, all effect of stealth was quickly abandoned, as several other guards were dispatched with rifle fire, for the loss of one of the outlaw's.
As the group heaped their victims into a corner, 4 of the men, wearing identical uniforms took their places, and their leader acquired a ring of keys. Entering the museum itself, the group made rapidly towards the treasure room. Spates of rifle-fire and the explosions of 2 grenades, dealt with the guards encountered, the Noble Rohirrim seeming not to want to surrender.
Once in the treasure room the group set to work, display cases were smashed, and stands demolished, in the center of the room sat the Sword of Narsil, the 2 former riders stood in awe, before the legendary sword of their king. Past them walked the groups leader, who in one swift movement drew an identical sword from a sheaf on his back, made the switch for the original. He held the great sword in his hands, and after a moment of silent awe, he sheaf-ed it, and signalled for the group to leave. As they went, further mess was made throughout the museum, though oddly nothing was taken. Finally, a short note was left sitting on the swords pedestal, it simply read "Next time we'll do better!"
With that they left, the 2 former riders, and their leader rode off into the dark, while the others made for the mountains, they would be less fortunate.

At Daybreak the three mounted men swapped horses, and rode on towards the rendezvous point.

Early November, port of New York

In a downpour, the ceremony of the Habsburg Empire taking possession of two UKA built trpships took place. The vessels, curiously named the SMHS Ersebeth Bathory and SMHS, are owned by the KKK, but crwed with reservists.
These ships will be used either to carry the Kaiser's sldiers, or steerage class passangers - no 1st, and very few 2nd class cabins on them.

In a few months' time a similar ceremony will be taking place on the other side of the globe, at the Russ-Sud yards in Nikolayev in the south of the Russian empire, where two half-sister ships - the SMHS Xantype and SMHS Salome - are being built.

This use of foreign yards is due to Austrian backwardness in the construction of turbines. They are very clever with VTE engines however, possibly making the best there are.

"Cease fire!", the captain of the Casanare shouted over the hideous crackling of a magazine detonation. The UKA frigate's forward ammunition had gone off, obliterating the forward half of the vessel. Ironically, the stern floated free for a few seconds before it tipped forward and began settling. Seeing that there were still living Anahuac aboard - albeit, Anahuac who were picking themselves off the deck - the captain added, "Belay that! Keep at it!"

The guns barely paused, and soon reduced the stern section to ruin, leaving no survivors that the captain could see with his field glasses. "Cease fire!", he called again. "Signal Cali to close in and look for survivors to finish off. If they see anything that proves the ship's identity, or useful things like codebooks, they are to collect them."

"Aye, sir." The action had been brisk. The Anahuac had brought the frigate's aft gun to bear, but had little ability to gauge range and clearly weren't experienced as a gun crew. They'd fired sporadically, and other than a shell through the aft funnel, had failed to hit the protected cruiser at all. The cruiser's fire had been accurate and effective, putting the enemy gun out of action within minutes. The captain could only assume the magazine detonation had been some intentional act of defiance.

Cali idled in carefully, several men forward watching the depth of the water beneath the ship as the gunners and a few sailors with rifles and pistols waited. A few shots rang out here and there, and then, for good measure, the torpedo-boat shot up the jungle beyond the wreck. After a few minutes, the torpedo-boat's blinker light flashed.

"No more survivors, sir. They report that the vessel's name is Troubridge."

The name resonated with the captain, but only vaguely. "Signal Cali to proceed west for twenty miles and alert all coastal communities to possible Anahuac raiders. UKA survivors, if any are located, are to be rescued and taken aboard under guard. Cali is then steam east for New Amsterdam, which is where we'll be when we've finished alerting communities in that direction."

"Aye, sir"

Today, an Armed Coalier of the Associacao Comercial do Mundo docked in the harbour and took on a full load of coal, the first time such an event has happened since the companies collapse several years ago. While she was in harbour, he Captain enjoyed Drinks in the Foreign Ministry, and left carrying a pleased smile, and a large Case.

After delivering the Position of the Habsurg Gov't on the 2nd Treaty of New York, the Habsburg Ambassador asks for passports. The Ambassador is recalled indefinitely.
In the afternoon most of the Austrian diplomats and their families leave by train for the CSA. A skeleton staff is left, with the highest ranking official being a Chargé d'affaires. Thus the Austrian mission was downgraded from Embassy to Legation, with the lowest possible rank of Head of Mission.

New York 16th December

The News that Austrian & DKB forces have attacked, and effectively destroyed the remnents of the ACM at the Azores, has been met by rioting and the targeting of nationals from those nations in hate attacks. A large number of wharehouses owned by firms from both nations have been burned, and many workers injured. The crowds are calling for retallation on the part of our New Allies.

In other News the Government has announced that the 1st Battlesquadron, the 1st Cruiser Squadren, and the 1st and 2nd Destroyer flottilas have sailed from New Bedford, Heading for the Azores. They are to be joined by the Peace time strength 4th and 5th Infantry divisions aboard the liners New Bedford, Queen Mary, King Harold & New York, which will sail from New York harbor latter today.

New York, more liners including the new Mercury have sailed from New York carrying the peacetime strength 8th & 9th Infantry Divisions, they will be escorted to the Azores by the fleets new G class Destroyers.

The 3rd Cruiser Division has sailed for the Bahamas in order to re-enforce the ACM forces based there.

In other News, the King has delayed travelling to New Bedford for Christmas, while he and the Cabinet decide on the best case of action with which to proceed over the matter of the ACM.

Word has been heard from the foreign Ministry that our relief force has landed in the Azores today, to no resistance. The sight that reportedly greeted them was one of desolation and dispair, with many homes in ruins, and grain wharehouses burnt to the ground. In the absence of any directors, General Hammond, of the 4th Infantry Division has taken command, pending orders. He has called for an immediate relief effort for the Island, and has stated that without significant help, the ACM will totally collapse.

New Switzerland does not see the need for the destruction of the homes or the graneries. While there is a need to capture the criminal mastermind Agrival, NS does not see why those that have been the most injured by his actions must suffer any further. Swiss merchants will be made available for relief operations.

The Foreign Ministry has announced today that the UKA has assumed full administerative control of the remnants of the Associacao Comericial do Mundo as of this morning. All ACM forces in the Azores and Bahamas have reportedly agreed to join the UKA's armed forces, with only minor changes to the line of command.

It was also announced that the 2nd Treaty of New York is now null and void.

New Bedford

In addition to the Foreign Ministry's statement, the King had the following to say from the Royal Families Winter home:-

The Republic of Orange condemns the landgrabbing that just classes UKA amongst the tyrannical states that has no will whatsoever to respect the sovereignity of elective states. However, declaring an International Treaty null and void, changing direction faster than the wind, signed by His Majesty's government a mere months ago eliminated any doubt that the United Kingdom of America does have any honor left. It has none. This place his dishonorable American majesty's government to a position where the Government of Orange can only conclude that UKA acted on bath faith, not having even had the will to abide the treaty it was committed to.
The Republic of Orange notices other countries, especially other Republics to take this into considerations in further deals with such a the UKA. Such a treacherous act at least questions whether the Normann kingdom wishes to abide its other former treaties, or just declare them null and void if it fits their agenda on an actual date.

The leader of the ACM was acknowledged to be Agrival Mars before the treaty was signed. Apparently the UKA Foreign Ministry does read neither intelligence reports nor newspapers, which were full of speculation after the news of the new ACM director emerged worldwide.

The other explanation is that the UKA knowingly made a treaty with the ACM, ignoring the fact that it is lead by Agrival for a time being, knowing that this will be a perfect pretext to abandon the treaty. Then, after making a secreet agreement with the Habsburgs, they let Austria raid the Azores without even a Declaration of War, which would force the Director to flee to the Bahamas.

At this stage, although the spirit of the treaty made it clear that the UKA should declare war on the Habsburgs unless Austria offers to pay compensation for the damage caused, they decided it is the right time to extend their "protectorate" over the former ACM.

The Azores will dwindle into oblivion, as no one will have any reason to stop there, instead of going right to the destination.

Modern ships has no need to stop for recoaling, just to pay harbor fees and lengthen the voyage by one or two days.

There are powers in Orange that sees the events as an act by the World Conspiracy of Monarchies ®, with the agenda is to clear all Republics and Democracies from the face of the Earth.

Every government can deduce their own conclusions how the 2nd New York Treaty was observed by the UKA. The one Orange arrived at is not putting the UKA in a favorable light.
