Future Ottoman Mini-AC?

Alikchi

An 8000-ton armoured cruiser carrying six 200mm guns at 21.5 knots. Relatively cheap but still capable of knocking holes in PCs from range. Plus heavy armour. Useful for escorting the battlefleet (probably about as good as larger ACs in this role) and perhaps independent operations.

I'm thinking of building four or even six of these and using them as station flagships in the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, etc. However I may wait to get better engine tech.

My verdict would be "over-armoured and undergunned".
Remember that untill around 1913 no-one will have capped AP shells, so 25cm of armour is more battleships-scale then anything else, a 25cm plate should be able to stop or scatter a 30cm shell at 8km (extreame range).
So i would mount more guns to make sure that you land hits on PC;s as the 10cm guns are somewhat lacking in destructive power against the large PCs we have around here.

I would say too slow. Ottoman ships can trade range for speed, IMO.

French ships have 6000 Nm standard range.

Reducing range to 4000Nm would give this Mini AC a grand 1000 tons extra to put into weapons or speed.

He cannot increase speed due to the rules about shp, the only way for him to get a faster ship is to use  reciprocating engines, and that will kill any weight savings.
And decreasing the range will no really give a lot more weight for guns or speed, as we use light displacement for everything, only a fraction of the weight of the fuel affects the ship.

I have a similar ship, Alikchi, that is about to slide off the ways- though slightly more heavily armed with a 8 x 7.5" gun broadside. They are to be my new 'armored cruisers' in the Gulf/Caribbean.

It is, true on the speed, but a 1000 tons gives 2 main gun turrets and all the armor needed. Or a complete secundairy battery.

1000 ton might give you that, but cutting the range to 4000nm will not give you 1000t ton to play with, it gives you around 150-200 ton to play with, and only around 50 if you keep the engines at 20k hp
Unless of course you make the ship larger, and increase its BP cost.

All of these criticisms are valid, and I'm not sure what to do with the design.

I'm going to drop the armour to 200mm. Range will go down to 6000nm, the range of my new BBs - I know that the Ottoman Navy is essentially coastal, but methinks these could be useful as raiders in, for example, the Indian Ocean, and it's a long journey from Gaza to Kuwait.

Long story short - I don't think I'll build anything until I get better engine tech.

Here is a result - this ship has twice the firepower at the same speed with slightly reduced range and armour.

They both look kind of similar to my Willem van der Zaan-class ACs, but with slightly more armour, and much smaller guns (20 vs. 24cm).
But after looking at my own ship, is the TB really such a good idea? My pretty identical ship can (SS) take 1,4 torpedoes, and you with the TB can only take 1,9.
Would you underwater surbivability go down to something similar, in that case the weight might be better used for something else?

My opinion is that a TBS is useless on anything smaller than 20000 tons.

As a station flagship, it may work.  I echo Borys' thoughts on the TBS on a ship this size.  Especially since you're also trying to stuff wing turrets in, which I'm not too certain about.

As a raider, the speed may be an issue depending upon who you'd be raiding against.

The thing is, there's not much else for me to spend the weight on. I can't put any more HP into the ship - unless I want a 5-shaft armoured cruiser. I don't know if the wing turrets will fit, either - I need to draw it, but I honestly kind of doubt it. I think this is a dead-end idea until I get better engine tech.

I used the tonnage gained from dropping the TBS to shrink the BC a bit and lengthen the belt slightly.

If you made those wing turrets into singles, for a 2x2, 4x1 armament, and adjust the length of your belt, you could probably then decrease the draught of the ship substantially.  That would provide greater speed on the same machinery.  And you'd still have a six gun broadside, which is not bad at all for the displacement.
