Ahoj!
If I declared that beaches around the old volcanic cones are strewn with diamonds which rolled down their sides, would that be interesting?
And a day when you don't find a nugget when weeding your garden is out of the ordinary?

No it would not, it would lead to dimond inflation.
But then again, it may make Antwerpen a even more important city in the Dimond industry... ;)

It is just that i find a reasonably populous, isolated and fragmented archipelago fascinating, and good background for deal breaking and stories. :)

Joking about the diamonds and gold :)

Glad you find Chuvosa inspiring.

Discovered by Portuguese in early 1500s. Sometimes used by ships going to India. As you probably know, to make best use of winds, after passing the Cabo verde Islands the procedure was to sail South-WEST, and then turn to South-East (that's how Brasil was discovered).

Not very attractive, volcanic islands. Dutch set up Plana at same time as Kaapstadt and for the same reason - to grow veggies :)

The little Orange island to the SE was ceded to the DKB.

I guess I won't offer to reduce the scale of the maps, then, if you guys are keen on this set-up.

Mineral resources - I'll check my books to confirm, but if I parked this over the Mid-Atlantic ridge, the geology will be like Iceland - not very metal-rich at all.  There will be some active volcanoes here and there, especially in the middle .  However, it should erode into good quality soil for agriculture (whether the climate supports good agriculture's another matter, of course).

I do believe St. Helena appears - marked by Jamestown - on the map.

I see no harm in it.

If we go with a Namib situation, would the sea be fishy :)?
Or no fishy?

I suspected that!

Probably the sea will be fishy,I presume it is the major commodity.

The Rock Doctor

Shallowish water, with local volcanic heating/upwelling to help with nutrients.  I'd say we're talking many fishes.

Borys

Ahoj!
OK - very fishy!
:D

Does this look ok?

Plana :
Size: 3884km2
Population: 350 000 (230 000 Dutch, 75 000 Celts, 30 000 Asians, 15 000 Africans)
Largest city: Angustad (Pop 50 000)
Exports: Fish, Meat, Spirits, Bananas, Oranges, Lemons,  Rice.
Industry: Primarily agro-industry, with some large meat and fish canning plants.

Geography:
The island is volcanic in origin, and heavily eroded with most of the island being below 10m in height. The climate is tropical, with almost constant east and south-east winds.
However the land rises towards the west of the island forming what is called the Plana spine mountains. This mountain ridge follows the entire west cost of the island, making that part of the cost markedly more rugged then the shallow east coast. The highest peak is Beinn Laomainn (Beacon Peak) to the north east of Angustad, rising to a height of 282m. Most of the mountain ridge is only between 80 and 120m in height.
There are several smaller rivers on the island, mainly running in a west-east direction. The largest river is however the Breede river, running north, the capital Angustad is founded on it mouth. The lowlands to the east of the spine cover most of the island, and mainly consist of small farms and villages with small forests between them. In later years several plantations have been started, mainly in the west. The east cost is home to a large number of fishing villages.

First settled by settles from the Dutch Isles (The Hebrides), during the 17th century, were the settlement Angustad became an important resupply point for convoys from Asia. During the following century the island was heavily settled by emigrant from the homeland, giving the island a very European feel. In later years there have been significant increases in the Asian and African population, mainly as labour on the plantations that have sprung up on the island.

Angustad: The largest city on Plana, and by far in the entire Flyssen archipelago. It is the economic, cultural and industrial heart of the islands.
The city is situated in the north of the island sheltered on three sides by the Plana spine and on the moth of the Breede river. There are several large fish processing plants, as well as one of the world's larger canning factories in the city, most of the industry in concerned with processing goods grown on the island for further export. Angustad is also connected by railroad to the interior of the island, and is the largest port in Flyssen.
The Marine also got a base in the city, as is the headquarter for the 4th Galloglaich division (From the Gaelic corps) located on the outskirt of the city.
(For looks, think Willemstad, city map to come)

Neblosa
Size: 6627km2
Population: 95 000 (35 000 Dutch, 20 000 Celtic, 25 000 Asian, 15 000 African)
Capital: Niue Hoorn (Population 8500)
Exports: Fish, Bananas, Coconuts, Cocoa, Coffee.
The youngest, largest and most geologically active of the Flyssen islands.
Neblosa is as far from Plana it is possible to get, the island in very mountainous, with a highest peak of 2278m. Roughly half most of the population is concentrated to the lowland plains around Niue Hoorn, with the remaining population spread over the interior or in fishing villages along the north-eastern coast. The north-west part of the island is almost unpopulated, the conditions with high peaks and steep slopes is unsuited for agriculture. There is however a large goat population in that area and the island is famous for its goat cheese.
There are two active volcanoes on the island Hengill and Laki, both in the north.

The Island never got the same kind of mass migration as the other two Flyssen islands, and only in the last 15-20 years have the islands population increased over 30 000. The massive increase in later years is mainly due to large scale plantations being established on the island.
The plantations primarily consists of tree crops (Bananas, Coconuts, Cocoa), often together with shade grown coffee. In 1909 Vanilla was introduced to some banana plantations.
The establishment of a plantation economy on the island have lead to some tensions between the traditional settlers who have lived on the island for generation (who are mainly sailors, small framers or fishermen, often all at the same time), and the business men involved with the plantations. However the plantations have brought much wealth and capital to the island, among other thins allowing for the opening of a railway line across the island.

Looks good so far.  I'm curious to see what the other occupants do with their islands.
