After Grossadmiral Enrico de Montecuccoli became head of the fleet, the following features have become prominent in Austrian naval design:
- forecastles, often one third ship lenght or longer, for better sea keeping;
- a cruising ranges of 5000 or 6500 miles for larger vessles, these being the sailing distances from Aden to Viraca, or from Pola to Paranagua respectively
- the switch to professional navy calls for space for acommodation being at least adequate
