And yes, that's a full 6 year build ship there.....

The decision for me is, whether to look at having a very few of these extremely powerful battleships.....or working up the smaller ships.....or even doing both.

I just ran the guns through Parallel Ballistics in comparison with my 400/45.

The majority of existing BBs run a belt somewhere around 340mm, some go as high as 380mm, and with angling some will probably give you around 400-410mm of protection.

The 450/45 can punch literally anything at 24,000m.....and can pierce 340mm belts at 30,000m.  Basically if the 450 can hit you, the 450 can penetrate you.

The 400/45 can punch anything at 17,000m.....and can pierce 340mm belt at 21,000m.  Most of the time, if 400 can hit you, 400 can penetrate you.

The 360/45 can punch anything at 12,000m.....and can pierce 340mm belt at 16,000m.  It's still a good shell, but it's really overshadowed by the massive guns for being able to reliably punch through armor and end an enemy vessel in just a few hits.

That penetrating power is definitely a consideration for me as well.

I find that requires a really big hull, though - your example wouldn't fit through the Trans-Eryka Canal as it stands, and I have similar problems with my 450mm designs.

I really do feel the catch 22 the Japanese felt when they designed Yamato.  Either I build a fully conventional fleet that cam do well against the Mayans but would struggle against anybody else.....or I pursue ships that are budget killers but also capable of taking on the best in the world and winning.   And new concepts like carriers.

Beginning to experiment with 'Aviation Cruisers'.  Basing off of the Lake-class Frigate, this variant loses the rear half of the main armament and brings the forward superfiring turret down to the main deck to clear room for flight ops aft.  The secondary goes to DP guns and on sponsons, along with quite a portion of the AA mounts, giving a 'gallery' all the way around the hangar.  She loses 35mm of her belt, and loses the end belt protection, but maintains the TDS and the deck is changed to a protected deck with a slightly higher belt to ensure the deck slopes are covered and provide maximum protection against AP hits against her citadel spaces.

In exchange for the deletions.....she gains a full squadron of 12 aircraft, with 4 catapults to facilitate rapid launching and a landing deck aft that can also be used as a flying off deck (but the catapults are there to allow for closer to simultaneous launches).  The anticipated air group would consist of one flight of scouts/bombers with two flights of fighters, and the mission profile would be as air cover for the screening force or independent cruiser squadrons rather than an attack force.  This is a potential alternative to a redux of the Martinique-style 'light' carrier with 3-4 times the air group but no ability to independently behave as a cruiser or self-escort.

So far I've had trouble making flight-deck cruisers work for me, but it's interesting to see others try it.

I take it you envision a couple of waist catapults in addition to the bow-launchers?

The idea is actually 4 side cats at deck level.   Launch overtop the AA installations.  To rapidly deploy maximum fighter coverage.

I'm still ambivalent.   This ship is self escorting.   But a martinique is so much more efficient on the tonnage with almost 4 times the flight group.

I'm going to have to review my cruisers to decide if I can afford to just mk2 martinique for the screen carrier role.

An alternate design.  Only 8 aircraft, and they will have to be catapult launched floatplanes, though I've worked the freeboard to give them an actual hangar and hangar access.  Upside.....there are now 9 x 180mm guns in the familiar ABC layout forward, and the top of the hangar is where a significant chunk of the AA battery sits, which gives it almost a 360 degree field of fire.  So the previous one is more of a carrier-cruiser.  This is more of a cruiser with the ability to deploy an airgroup that is at least functional with the full ability to maintain and sortie aircraft unlike ships that only have armed scouts/spotters.

And finally, in the trifecta of options for a carrier to put with the cruiser forces......I go directly away from something with cruiser armament, or even cruiser armor for the most part.....and go for a pure aircraft carrier with three squadrons (generally doctrine is to have 2 squadrons of fighters and 1 of bombers).  Upside, 3 squadrons of aircraft and full handling facilities.  Downside, requires an escorting cruiser.

And since I'm working on this program of laying down a single BB every 2 years, I need something in between the 1928 HMS Conqueror....and the HMS Royal Sovereign monster in 1932.  So a revision of the Conqueror, the engineering improvements allow for a belt that's 25mm thicker (though tapered), and a slightly thicker TDS.  Otherwise they're basically as close to twins as we're likely to see in this new method of building battleships for the RAN:

These small aircraft carriers are an interesting solution because they multiply the number of flat decks and only require a few BP.

They are interesting.   Mostly for the speed of construction.   The problem is doctrine,  and the question is whether to just spend the extra hy to build a somewhat larger carrier with double the flight group.
