Adjusting the freeboard upward a bit might give you a bit of extra hull strength on the razee to play with.

On the other hand, Bomb's cross-sectional strength is a tad too low.

I hear you on files.  I lost most of the pre-game stuff with my last computer.  At some point, I think I might attach my current .sship files to the encyclopedia entries so they never get lost.

Yeah, with Bomb, it met CS requirements.  Then it didn't....then it did....ad nauseum.  That's just a matter of adjusting the 'reserve' weight that's been dedicated to DC equipment.  Won't be an issue.

I'll try that on the Razee.  Ultimately I'd like to get it down to around 15-16,000t, but I also don't want a ship with inadequate protection.

More redesigns (ok, new computer, so whole new designs) for the 1922 BB project.  With so much focus of the other powers on larger 'fast battleships' that combine the qualities of Battleship and Battlecruiser, a number of design changes have been accepted, namely that the previous intent of keeping battleships under the 27,000t threshold is no longer possible.

The second design for consideration.  Cutting the main guns down from 12 to 9, leaving the speed the same, and marginally improving the armor on a smaller hull.

And finally, as variation on the theme, a 30kt Fast BB.  Belt armor is reduced slightly, and freeboard is raised the necessary amount to give her passable seakeeping at top speed....though obviously she'd be a much better sailing boat at cruising speed with that freeboard.  The 3 triples are retained rather than the 4 triples, but most of the tonnage for the 4th triple has gone into the engines to push this ship up to proper 'cruiser' speeds.

The quarterdeck armor makes me nervous, given that I believe the steering gear is under it.  It won't suck up a lot of tonnage to improve it, I don't think.

Yeah, I'll probably wind up making some tweaks.  Mostly I'm working through the broad strokes of the 3 types I can get with the available equipment:

1)  12 x 14in guns at moderate-fast speed
2)  9 x 14in guns, a lot lighter at moderate-fast speed
3)  9 x 14in guns, and at true BC speeds

The miscellaneous weight numbers aren't adding up for me, and you don't have enough miscellaneous weight for both a catapult and crane...

Yeah, there will need to be some tweaks, these are 'general representative designs, not a final product.  Mostly I roughed out 3 variations on a Fast Battleship and am trying to decide which one is the better one to fine tune, a 27 knotter or a 30 knotter.....and then a 12 x 36cm or a 9 x 36cm.  A decision of cost/build time vs firepower vs speed......

Another design proposal accepts that deck armor is progressively more important on the high seas with the extended ranges that are anticipated for gunfights.  For the possibility of closer-ranged engagements, the belt is backed by the deck slopes.  This is an effort to make a 27kt battleship with modern amenities on the lightest tonnage possible.  (IRL it's actually not too far off in protection from the NC class).

The "Other gunhouse" numbers bother me.
Perhaps it's a design choice.

That is not *just* the turret roof.
That's the turret sides as well...and rear.

While hopefully you'll always have the turret face towards the foe,
and any longer battle line will only have oblique shots,
even an angled hit will likely punch through.

As for the Quarterdeck issue... I have it on Parthian ships too,
all that's really back there is shafts and steering chains, the former large enough to laugh at splinters the latter fixable after a little bit.
Still, the stern angle is small enough it's not much weight and I've started putting more serious armor there.

The 30mm TDS on the most recent ship seems slightly weak, but with 3.5m deep it may work out.
As the radius from the explosion grows, the surface area massively increases, and the energy per unit area drops, so the deeper in the better thinner bulkheads should work.
While I know there's a waterjet factor, I don't know how to factor that, and depth helps there too.

Yeah I keep running into the issue of trying to fit a quart in a pint pot.

I can build out a 35,000 tonner that's probably moderately competitive, but I don't have a 400mm gun and don't anticipate having one for at least another 3 years or so.  I can build more Monarch-style (Nelson) Battleships that are pretty darn tough, but they also are slow and relatively short ranged compared to the rest.  They're good for the Caribbean, but not much else.

If the Battleships hadn't jumped to 27kts everywhere else, I could have been building some battlecruisers at 28kts with 9x360 and call it a day.  What this fast BB concept is....is how to get something that's reasonably ok as a BB, on a budget.

I'll probably accept an increase in tonnage by about a thousand tons, and see if I can't squeeze another inch into the TDS, and probably about another inch into the turrets to make them 170-180mm.

For my part I was happy to explore the slow & steady concept of the Speed/armor/guns triangle,
but that increase of speed is starting to be noticeable.
While I have strong doubts about the value of speed for battleline dreadnaughts,
and I will probably still build the Kalifern class, they will be my last 20knotters
and the Stormbringer class will be the template beyond that.

The latest 20-21kt battleships that Parthia and Byzantium build are particularly powerful. They don't fear being overtaken by the 27-30kts.

That's the Monarch class philosophy.  Ok, so we're only 24kts, and only 27,000t.  You bring your 35,000t ship over here and still can't punch holes in our citadel while we rip you apart.
