I dont disagree, but while the design requirements may be geared as an AC-killer, the expectation is LACs will need to also tangle with enemy battlecruisers as well. Sure, the Roman LACs might not stack up favorably against all hostile battlecruisers, but knowing that IC is unlikely. The worry at this point is while Rome could build a really good AC killer on much smaller tonnage (say a 8 or 12 180mm armed ship with armor to withstand heavier guns), that's a ship that is so specialized so as to be almost worthless outside of the contrived consumption that birthed the concept. Being larger to also tangle with hostile ships in the same size band means the ship has more potential uses in a general scenario. Given that it also means it can overkill its primary prey to such an extent that crippling  damage in return is highly improbable, its a worthy tradeoff in my book.

I would agree with you.  And within enough time as to be useful, you'd be finding out about the Caribbean class.  The LAC can kill them, if not always catch them.  The above Armored Cruiser would be wholly outclassed in every way except sheer rate of fire by a 32-ish knot light battlecruiser with 280mm guns and armor to reliably withstand 200mm shellfire at most reasonable combat ranges.

If I had a gun in that range, I would. Until the 235 is ready in 1918, my choices are a 180 or a 340 (the 210 I have being considered an obsolete weapon). And by 1918, I'd hold any new design until I can throw Geared Drives in beginning in 1919. That ends up making something like this fall out of the Fisherite tree.

Slight revision to the GPC-17C design. Deck thickened to 30mm to keep out splinters from 180mm or smaller guns & thickened to 30mm over the quarterdeck, other armor thinned to compensate.

Two designs that need polish before I can stop slacking and knock off my 17H1 report. The first is a new Large Armored Cruiser. Previously I'd been debating between a strait update of Jeanne d'Arc and a streached version for another 340mm double-twin. Since I need to have something with a A(B)-Q layout, my plan was the streached version. Rather than diddle around with a less functional ship on that armement level than something I had planned on building at one point, here is an updated Tullius Leofric. Will make a nice capstone to the separation of Battleships and Large Armored cruisers before the full fusion in the early 20s. Needs some slight detail revisions for things like weapon year when I'm not on my laptop.

1919 sees Geared Drives show up, so some existing designs are going to get a mid-cycle refresh to accommodate them. First up is the GFD-19 design, essentially an updated Rainier Marion. The additional Misc weight allocated above what the Rainier Marion's have is intended for ASW gear. It also replaces the long 140L55 for a 140L40, specifically developed for use on lighter ships.

I have also tested the 140mm (from HMS Hood) on destroyers. For the moment, I prefer to keep the 120mm (in twin mount if necessary).
The 120mm shell is lighter to handle on a small moving ship and the rate of fire is higher.

And looking at another 1919 design, a more "conventional" armored cruiser. Something that can handily outfight a protected cruiser while having the turn of speed to run from anything which can really hurt her in return. Of course there are some Aztec battlecruisers which make that something I probly dont want to test to much.

Kicking around since the loss of her three sisters during the Caicos Affair, the IRS Vesontio has been in an interesting position. Lacking any other cruisers in the IRN lineup with which she meshes well, to fast to work with old VTE cruiser, to slow for more modern turbine ships, various proposals have been tossed around for her use. Finally, the dropped quarterdeck has won over most parties into using the Vesontio as the test-bed for the new concept of a Seaplane Tender.
