Another auxiliary, a dedicated multi-purpose fast dispatch boat. Good range at a good cruising speed (5500nm @14kts) and space for diplomatic personnel and boats for use in areas without suitable harbors. For fleet use it can serve as a rescue boat and emergency flagship, and it has an enhanced electronics kit allowing it to be used for intelligence gathering. It is not actually fitted with weapons, but has been designed to mount a limited defensive armament suite (25mm auto cannons and short range electric torpedoes).

Comprehensive refurbishment of the Kobayashi Marus. They are close to hitting 25 years old but as auxiliaries don't need new replacements.

Main changes are brand new engines pushing speed up to 17kts, cruising speed to 14kts, and range to a massive 17,000nm (primarily to refuel fleet ships). Defensive armament has also been seriously updated, as well as the misc weight stuff, including adding four 40t boats, improved accommodations, and a sensor suite.

Cost per ship is $1.1 and 0.27 BP

Handy.  Not my style, but it's a lot of guns and decent speed for its cost.

The Chihayas are hopelessly obsolete as scout cruisers but they are still solid hulls. At first I thought about turning them into training ships but then... They have sail rigging, so why not turn them into ASW sloops? You can use sails to quietly hunt submarines. Throw some modern engines in and now you have a ton of misc weight for a very comprehensive and heavy ASW suite, plus a significantly longer range.

QuoteThe Chihayas are hopelessly obsolete as scout cruisers but they are still solid hulls.

Exellent use.

I'm having second thoughts about replacing the engines entirely since the cost would be more than a new aux with 90% of the functionality. So I might do a more modest refit, keeping the original engines but making them 100% oil fired and installing the ASW suite since I don't really need 300t worth of it.

You can never have too many depth charges.

This should be significantly cheaper, while still having plenty of misc weight for an ASW suite.

The Fubukis are big, nasty, and expensive. An attempt at a cheaper "colonial" version that fits in 300ft drydocks. Loses a 5" mount, some torpedoes, range, and seakeeping. Compared to the Minekazes it has significantly improved armament, but slightly shorter range and seakeeping at 250t more (OOC annoyed at those extra 50t). So not quite sure if they will be built.
