I am a bit surprised the later ships don't take advantage of the ability to have overweight shells.
for the 'battleship' range, it can be questionable because of the effects on MV at different tech levels,
but for the <280mm rounds it seems worthwhile.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,

Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

The Rock Doctor

I considered it, but it added to cost and I felt I was already straining to balance firepower, speed and protection without giving up something to accommodate heavier shells.

Kaiser Kirk

Balance ?
Is that why I see no unarmored 50knot vessels equipped with a spar torpedo ?

Shhhhh, Jef's not supposed to know about those.

The navy had neglected its heavy cruiser arm for too long in favor of a modest battleline; this class seeks to produce something that can challenge Siamese/Deccan/Sultanate units and be a significant nuisance to larger navies.

1928 armored cruiser, laid down 1928
Machinery:
   Coal fired boilers, steam turbines,
   Geared drive, 4 shafts, 101,877 shp / 76,000 Kw = 29.14 kts
   Range 12,000nm at 10.00 kts
Bunker at max displacement = 2,643 tons (100% coal)

Seems to be the only coal fired vessel in this time period.
Intentional?

It looks good except that the 1928 ships can and should carry enhanced hydrophone packages rather than just the basic fit.
