The Rock Doctor

With two armored cruisers in service for sea control purposes, the navy turned its attention to adding heavy firepower in the form of battleships.  Ironically - despite being able to see larger powers building some pretty huge, fast, well-protected vessels - domestic production capabilities were much more limited.

In theory, construction could branch out from the AQY layout to an en-echelon or superfiring layout (with limited firing arcs).  However, the navy had by now absorbed the idea that torpedoes were potentially problematic to the en-echelon layout unless and until torpedo bulkheads could be included...which they couldn't yet.

So the navy decided to stick with a well-armored AQY ship with six of the heaviest guns it could build, on a long-legged, stable-ish yet affordable hull.  Later on, two floatplanes and a catapult would be installed during a refit.  It might not be a peer to Japanese or Byzantine designs, but it seemed like a pretty tough customer for its size.

The navy opted to add more battleships in the 1920 program.  A larger hull accommodates 3-gun mountings in the A and Y positions, but retains a 2-gun in the Q position.  The secondaries make use of the same 2-gun mount and hoist that the current light cruiser does.  Protection is improved, including provision of a torpedo bulkhead.  Geared turbines are added, although the bunker is reduced compared to the 1916 design (not sure why, but it's still pretty sufficient for the operating area)

Revision to the class of 1920:  There are actually no 250 t in the 1905 submarine field, so I revised to 5 x 500 t boats instead of 10 x 250 t boats.

The Rock Doctor

The Class of 1924

This is a bit different.  It's a small depot ship intended to support forward deployments of MTBs, small subs, and patrol craft in some of the shallow bays along the coast.  It's also got a relatively heavy armament and high speed in case an enemy comes calling.  Will it work out?  We'll find out.

This is, obviously, built to military specifications.
