From Kirk: I screwed up and hit the wrong button.
One mod-power is editing other folks posts.
In this case I ..um...replaced Tac's argument with my reply.

Sorry.

Tac was observing that 25t was allot for the relatively simple hydrophone array, and 5-10t seems better, any chance of changing that.
...well it was longer, but that's the gist.

QuoteMy impression is that 10 tons is closer to right.

However, Hydrophones/ASDIC/SONAR are an area that I just don't know much about.
I've read more books about Subs than about subhunting.

My impression is the 25t is a somewhat arbitrary amount, but it's "enough" .

Some decent digging on why it's too much would seem to be a reasonable basis to change it.

Coincidentally, a book I ordered for myself has an unexpectedly long and detailed section on hydrophones.
Tonnages aren't listed, but there was a variety of ways in which they were mounted.
These ranged from a single microphone, to the more common two
there were towed arrays, there were "towed fish",
there were lines of hydrophones in hull blisters,
etc, etc.

I have not had time to thoroughly read it, but will in a couple weeks.
So with some future work, breaking them into subcategories with differing tonnages seems plausible and defensible.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest
