It's cute but there's nowhere to actually stow the balloon when it isn't airborne.

Big box on deck? The British stuffed balloons into their TBs in WWI. I don't think a deflated balloon takes up alot of space.

The concerns of wartime have caused the previously discounted 'large cruiser' to be revisited.  The BBx program would have replaced both battlecruisers and battleships and made 'large cruisers' more of a pointless gesture.  However the understanding that the Royal Aztec Navy might not be able to continue its original building plans in a post-war environment due to budget and losses in other classes, the type has been revisted as a 'small battlecruiser' that can provide a measure of capital unit to the fleet while generally being less expensive than proper capital ships.

Another 'emergency' design drawn up due to the war is a 'coastal' battleship built for the Caribbean theater and more specifically built to accompany the new Implacable class should the Aztec navy find itself without any battleships.  Again, the design plans are to be as inexpensive and as quick to build as possible.  An alternative design using 280mm guns which would match the Implacable class for firepower gun for gun is also in the works.

The beam for that tripled-14" design might be kind of low.  The stats are otherwise not too bad for an emergency build, if an emergency build is needed urgently.

Overall beam or beam between bulkheads?

Both; the lowest beam I can find on a historical 3x14" ship was Nevada, at 95'.

Interesting.   I'll have to fiddle it up to 30 or so then.

Possibly.

Overall I'll widen the beam to 30m and then reduce length and draft until I get the weight/comp down while not utterly demolishing my seakeeping.

Should make for a hella maneuverable ship.  The standards were noted for their tight turning circle and they're going to 'leaner' than this ship.

Obviously in a perfect world I'd go with a 3x3x360mm Battleship.  But I'm preparing for the significant possibility that Snip and I turn the Caicos into Ironbottom Sound.  If that were to happen, then in 1916 I would deploy a 3 battleship battle line.  And call it OCD, but I don't consider a 3 ship battle line to be sufficient.  I consider 4-6 ships to be the proper number for a battle squadron, I had been hoping to flesh out all my BBs into a 5 BB Battle Squadron in the Caribbean.  This is prepping for the Veracruz class, which aren't great battleships anyway, to be sunk or sufficiently mauled that it's impractical to rebuild them.  If I lose a lot of battleships in this war, I'll need something that's functional yet cheap to build as a battle line unit.....so that's why the 2x3x360mm 'stubby and slow dunkerque' design is being fiddled with.

As for secondaries, ultimately they'll be replaced with 130mm twins.  But given the parameters for me to start building this class, I need to anticipate starting it before I get any new guns completed.

Updated version of the Coastal BB.  Points of note:
1)  Beam widened to 30m.
2)  Tonnage comes up by around 2000t
3)  Armor goes to uniform 260mm, all or nothing.....but with quite a bit of extra room in that citadel.  Shows good floatation and torpedo resistance.
4)  A bit shorter, and the BC dropped slightly....she should turn like no tomorrow.
5)  Accident with non-superfiring B turret fixed.  Now it's a Dunkerque arrangement with triples, all can fire on about that 270 arc which should help with FC solutions.

With the loss of a full third of the fleet's mine warfare ships, a desperate need for a fast minelayer is observed.  The current economic pressures due to ongoing capital ship construction that cannot be slowed after Ironbottom Bay mean that a cruiser-based minelayer is not possible.  Thus planning begins in earnest for high-speed minelayers based on existing Destroyer concepts.  Two designs are brought forward, one that can begin construction immediately and another that can begin construction in January of 1915:
