Speed is the big killer, trying to push the Mayas to 29 knots would have likely increased their size by 3,000t. 27kts is the sweet spot right now.

Might want to check your armor coverage.

Why reciprocating and not turbines?

Armor has always been a weak point in my understanding of ship design (one of many).  I've usually gone with the recommended standard or altered the main belt to cover more of the ship than the recommended portion to some arbitrary number, rarely have any reason for it.  What would make it better, and more importantly for future designs, why?

I went with reciprocating engines because the ship it was based off had reciprocating engines.  I'll see what it looks like with turbines.

You have the lovely Main belt does not fully cover magazines and engineering spaces warning. That typicly means boom if shot at.

You are absolutely correct and I did not even notice.  Looks like its mostly fixed now.  I redid it with turbines and a hydraulic drive and added armor.  Gives me a smaller (and cheaper) vessel overall.

Still looks like you have some composite to play with. I would make these a little faster, 25knts feels a hair too slow.

As I was posting it I was wondering if it was too slow.  I based it on scout cruisers but intended it as a screening cruiser rather than a scout or even destroyer leader.  At one point I had print-outs of every other nation's capital ships and cruisers and their basic statistics.  Now its out of date (it was based only on pre-1910 builds).  Can I go down to 0.9 composite? Or cross-sectional?

Trying my hand at a battlecruiser.  I think I did the TDS properly but not positive.  Added a second long-range wireless for redundancy, as this vessel is supposed to be sent far away from the homeland.

A second option on a similar hull with 350mm guns in a triple turret.  Tried to keep everything else the same but the 3x3 option didn't work, too much broadside for the hull to handle, they could only fire end-on.

Kaiser Kirk

First use of hydraulic drives I think :)
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

snip

The Hydraulic drives are an interesting choice. I wonder how much additional height you can add to the belt with the 137t they take up, 2.48m is not a lot of coverage and I think the design would be better served with a more extensive belt than 350nm more range.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when solider lads march by
Sneak home and pray that you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.
