The Rock Doctor

The Union has been working on a new 350mm/45cal gun for its next generation of capital ships, and the design work for both the gun and a triple mounting were completed at the end of 1911.

With said capital ships likely three years from being in service, there has been some discussion about putting the gun into limited service in order to work out the kinks and assess blast effects.  Somewhat to the surprise of the Navy, Treasury Board approved the funding.  Consequently, a very large monitor will be built to ship one turret around.

It'd be much more seaworthy than ol' Bruno.  I could see taking her across the Atlantic and parking her in Chesapeake Bay.

maddox

She's a about 4 times bigger than poor concrete movable pier Faa di Bruno.

Kaiser Kirk

So it's got a raised forecastle, and the turret is raised so it can fire foreward over it??
For a monitor is forward fire that important?

I presume you wanted the 130mm to be QF?
That's a gun size I'm trying to get around to, but I'm planning 135mm.

Also, the TDS is 1m deep on each side. I know it claims 10 torpedoes...I'd change the depth of protection.

Armor decks are multiple - so like 20mm and 30mm?

Interesting overall.
I've tinkered with some monitor designs, nothing that heavily gunned.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

The Rock Doctor

It'd be one armor deck, so I might've clicked on something by accident.

Kaiser Kirk

I will also not that at a L:B of 4.14:1 , it's pushing the minimum.
For my purposes, it's a solid monitor design, so it is the type of vessel that can reasonably go down that far - different hull form purpose.

QuoteShips approaching circular shape (L:B ratio of less than 4:1) risk moderator-inflicted performance issues.

The Rock Doctor

I was just thinking about circular ships the other day...

The Rock Doctor

So apparently I never posted the K-class torpedo-boat that shows up in earlier sim reports, and the original SS is lost in space and time somewhere, so here's a re-do.

Only four were built, and they'll probably wind up on a colonial station.
