Odwazny Class

Not that you'll ever see the preceding class, but rest assured that the Odwazny (was Modig) are larger and more seaworthy than them.  They are, however, not long for the scrapyard at this point.

Odwazny, LN-5,laid down 1891, scrapped 1913
Potezny, LN-6, laid down 1891, scrapped 1913
Wierny, LN-7, laid down 1892, scrapped 1914
Ryzykowny, LN-8, laid down 1893, scrapped 1914
Silny, LN-9, laid down 1893, scrapped 1915
Twardy, LN-10, laid down 1894, to Japan 1916

#3
Wspanialy Class

An original order of five units of this class was truncated at just two, with two others cancelled and the fifth not even ordered, as it became apparent that new technology was overtaking the design.

The class received a useful refurbishment in 1921, leaving them near the cutting edge of pre-dreadnought battleships, which is to say likely to survive secondary duties like shore bombardment and so forth.  The ships were converted to oil-firing, fire control was improved, tertiary and quaternary batteries were replaced, and flag facilities were increased.  Inexplicably flawed protection on the secondary battery was upgraded.

Note this was the Magnifik class when originally posted with Swedish names.

Wspanialy (Magnificent), LN-17, laid down 1902, refurbished 1921, scrapped 1930
Znakomity (Brilliant) , LN-18, laid down 1902, refurbished 1921, preserved as museum ship, 1931

The Rock Doctor

#4
Nieugiety Class

The Nieugiety class (was Orubblig) were the Union's first all-big-gun capital ships, shoehorning twelve larger guns into the same configuration as the preceding class while also making use of new turbine machinery

A mid-life refurbishment was authorized in 1922, with fairly extensive changes including armored bulges, new engines, additional armor, and oil-fired boilers.  These adjustments provide protection and speed approximately on the scale of the subsequent Wrogi class battleships and will facilitate joint operations with that class.

Nieugiety (Adamant), LN-21, laid down 1905, refurbished 1922
Dziki (Fierce), LN-22, laid down 1906

The Rock Doctor

#5
Wrogi Class

The Wrogi (was Fientlig) Class carries the same number of guns as the preceding class, but in triple turrets, including two on the wings with limited cross-deck arcs.  The top speed is a respectable 23 knots.  The class underwent a fairly extensive refurbishment in 1925/6.

The Rock Doctor

#6
Anders Angstrom Class

It's important to note that the government imposed a hard displacement cap on the navy:  27,000 t light.  None of this "40,000 t, builds for five years" nonsense that the navy was TOTALLY NOT THINKING ABOUT.  The government wants the lead unit, at least, laid down, launched and completed while the government is still in power to reap the political benefits of this.

The Navy then had to come to terms with the reality that the resulting ship would not be a world-beater, trend-setter, or otherwise match everybody else's capital ships.  On the other hand, a 27,000 t ship, being less expensive than a 40,000 t ship, is the kind of ship that might see more action, wider deployments, and a wide array of situations simply because it's more expendable.  The navy is also hoping it'll be able to afford a number of the type though that remains to be borne out by government decision-making.  At the moment, they have names for six but authorization for two.

It was then, that the ship should be reasonably fast.  25.84 kts is, for a modern battleship, reasonably fast.  Not quite BC fast, but certainly competitive with early BCs.  The seakeeping and freeboard are sufficient to allow another ~2 knots or so when the ships receive new turbines during midlife refits.

The class was also to be reasonably armored against its own battery and against torpedo/mine attacks, which is considered to be the case here.  This was more or less locked in before the Sino-Japanese conflict due to the Navy's awareness of submarines and the risk of such in confined operating areas such as the not-English Channel.  The end belt might seem like a anachronism but this is intended to protect against ice in the Baltic and North Atlantic and will reduce splinter-related flooding.

The armament is a bit of a compromise.  The main battery is the most powerful gun in the Union inventory and satisfactory for now.  The mountings are a weight-saving consideration, while the layout is both also a weight-saving factor as well as a preference for firepower while being chased over firepower while chasing.  The 10cm battery is a late, Sino-Japanese-inspired panic-addition and tapped the ship's calculated construction reserve; at the time of lay-down, the exact location of these deck mounts is likely still be sorted out.

The class began refits in 1924/5, updating fire control, AA, adding torpedo nets and squeezing a floatplane and catapult aboard, and adjusting bits of the superstructure.

The Rock Doctor

#7
Johann Encke Class Battleship

Almost a decade after the Battle of Dakar, there is still intense political debate in the Vilnius Union about whether armored cruisers/battlecruisers/cruisers of the line have supplanted the battleship as the ship of force in the 20th century.

Complicating the discussion is a growing recognition that the Vilnius Union's access to the larger world - including all its external territorial possessions - must flow through one of two choke points created by whatever we're calling the British Isles.  One outlet is around the isles to the north, through the North Sea, between core Northern Kingdom lands.  The other is around the isles to the south, via whatever we're calling the English Channel, tightly constricted by core Roman territories.

If the Union is at war with either of these polities, access to the Atlantic becomes...problematic.

The perceived wisdom is that a partial solution to this is for Union capital ships to have a sprint capability that minimizes time in these constricted waters and for a hostile neighbour to react to a sortie once initiated.  Bunkerage must also be high to support such a sprint although (SPOILER) the notion of underway oiling is of great interest to Union thinkers right now.  This explains why the Czarownik class cruisers of the line can carry so much more oil than the preceding Szermierz class, and why other, smaller Union combatants have seen their bunkerage increase in recent design work.

All that to say, the next Union capital ship was going to be fast and long-legged regardless of whether it was a cruiser of the line or a battleship.  As it happens, the Johann Encke is considered a battleship, though her armament very closely follows the Czarowniks and her appearance is not that dissimilar.  Encke does carry marginally heavier belts, with greater inclination, and the deck protection is substantially heavier as well.  Of note, the class embarks a single floatplane amidships - unprotected from the elements at this time.

Johann Encke will be laid down in 1/21; a sister is expected in 1922.  It is not yet clear whether the class will extend to four, like the preceding Angstrom class, or if hypothetical battleships G and H will be a later, different class.

Johan Gadolin Class Battleship

This is not quite the simple updating of the Johann Encke class that had originally been envisioned.  Of note, there is more bunkerage, the armor belt is a full deck higher, and the secondary battery is a sextet of the new two-gun 150mm turrets also being installed on contemporary light cruisers.  The hull is consequently a fair bit longer and a little bit higher than the Encke's.

The ship also has two small hangers to house a floatplane each, on either side of the aft funnel, and the superstructure has been updated to replace the somewhat open tripod mast of previous classes with an enclosed tower thingy.  I might yet refine the look of that tower, as I'm not 100% happy with it, but you get the idea.

The Rock Doctor

#9
Jan Ingenhousz Class Battleship

The 1931 battleship makes some adjustments from the preceding Gadolin class.

The armament is a newer, heavier 400mm/50 weapon, still in four 2-gun mounts.  The secondary uses new 150mm/50 2-gun mounts in a hexagon arrangement rather than all on the sides.  The latter allows for a larger but more rational light AA layout.

Deck protection is 30mm over 140mm for most of the length.  The depth of the main belt is reduced so it no longer extends into the torpedo defence system like with Gadolin.

As usual, two units are anticipated.
