Those are some really slow DDs. Sure they can gun down any other destroyer no problem, but forget about getting a successful torp attack off with them. I think I have a couple cruisers that can almost catch these in the same era.

First, these are  gunboats for patrols & coastal actions.

Second, they are not made for attack but for defense.
battleline protection & auxliaries escort.

...& finish damaged slow down enemy ships

4x120+4TT-21kts on 500t, these are 66 economical gunboats.  ;)

I'm not sure how comfortable I feel with these being built to destroyer rules. I know we use to have a minimum speed of 24knts for them and Im beginning to see why.

i"m not sure that all DDs built in this restart have a minimum speed of 24kts... (?)

Jef,

Can I see what these ships would look like if they were constructed to the cruiser rules?

IMO, 24kts minimum speed is difficult to obtain without turbines

-----------------------------
Javelin, Parthia Destroyer laid down 1900
Machinery:
Coal and oil fired boilers, complex reciprocating steam engines,
   Direct drive, 1 shaft, 2,126 ihp / 1,586 Kw = 20.90 kts
   Range 2,050nm at 10.00 kts
Bunker at max displacement = 56 tons (90% coal)
-----------------------
Displacement:
   60 t light; 61 t standard; 63 t normal; 65 t full load

Machinery:
Coal and oil fired boilers, complex reciprocating steam engines,
   Direct drive, 1 shaft, 808 ihp / 603 Kw = 18.60 kts
   Range 156nm at 12.00 kts
Bunker at max displacement = 4 tons (90% coal)
     Caution: Delicate, lightweight machinery
--------------------
Dart-3, Parthian Torpedo Boat laid down 1900 (Engine 1907)

Displacement:
   59 t light; 61 t standard; 63 t normal; 65 t full load

Machinery:
Coal and oil fired boilers, steam turbines,
   Direct drive, 1 shaft, 1,225 shp / 914 Kw = 20.50 kts
   Range 156nm at 12.00 kts
Bunker at max displacement = 4 tons (90% coal)
------------------------------
A-class, Norse Destroyer laid down 1892

Displacement:
   302 t light; 314 t standard; 347 t normal; 374 t full load

Machinery:
Coal fired boilers, simple reciprocating steam engines,
   Direct drive, 2 shafts, 4,156 ihp / 3,100 Kw = 23.00 kts
   Range 1,500nm at 10.00 kts
Bunker at max displacement = 59 tons (100% coal)
     Caution: Delicate, lightweight machinery
----------------------------------
I propose 24kts mini with turbines
23kts mini for complex VTE
22kts mini for single VTE

I counter with the Roman A-Class Destroyers, which can make 24.38 knts on 1892 SREs.

I'm not saying we need the limit back, as I think the engine weight is a much better way of having a limit. I just don't know how I feel about these specific ships under the DD rules. But given those other ships, it looks like there would need to be a broader talk about it if I'm going to contest these on a gut feeling. Given the age of the ships, I don't think it's an issue we need to spend a lot of time on. As long as the ships meet all the legal requirements for being built to Destroyer rules, I have no further complaints.

QuoteI counter with the Roman A-Class Destroyers, which can make 24.38 knts on 1892 SREs.
While Jeff's TGB is heavier, your A-class destroyer is 31% heavier than my A-class (giving your design a lot more 'breathing space' than mine) and 622% heavier than the Parthian Dart-3 design.

I tried to match the OTL British A-class, though mine is slightly heavier than the heaviest of the A-class sub classes, slightly faster than the "27-knotter" group and uses single expansion engine because triple expansion engines are not allowed (and by the looks of it, the A-class were built with those engines).

OTL British A-class destroyer
Built: 1892–1895
In commission: 1893–1920

Displacement: From 185–340 long tons (188–345 t)
Length: 200–210 ft (61–64 m)
Propulsion: Triple expansion steam engines, Coal-fired water-tube boilers
Speed:    26 kn (48 km/h) or 27 kn (50 km/h)
Complement: 46 to 53
Armament: 1 × QF 12-pounder gun, Up to 5 × QF 6 pounder guns, 2 × 18 inch (450 mm) torpedo tubes, Daring and Havock-class ships had a third torpedo tube in the bow, later removed.

Norse A-class destroyer
Built: 1892
In commission: 1893-
Displacement: 347 tons
Length: 200 ft
Propulsion: Simple reciprocating steam engines, Coal-fired boilers
Speed: (sim) 23 kn, (trial) 27.44 kn
Complement: 39 to 52
Armament: 1 × BL 75mm gun, 5 × QF 57mm guns, 2 × 18 inch torpedo tubes.

It is necessary to take advantage of the rules to give the possibility for SS original ships, other than those who participated in the WW1 & 2.

Novelties are good.
