Esentialy exactly what it is Jeff.  I are teh like this one honestly.  Sure it has bumps and warts, but the built in speed makes it "useful" far beyond its initial lifetime (aka the pre dreadnought era).  It is Fast, "Tough", and well armed.  Sure with Coal propulsion and VTEs it cant maintain that 24 knots for very long but DAMN man, 24 knots with semi reasonable armour.

Machinery for 23kts is expensive with VTE engines : 5000t => 30% of the displacement.

Very Very true Jef, I have to ask myself if its worth it.  In the end I think it proly is, what I am still not sure about is the belts.  Found this yesterday when I was doing research for my first dreadnought type and now I kind of wonder if we arnt all over armouring our ships... http://postimg.org/image/u164lk6px/full/ its the armour layout for one of the QE designs and shows that the "main" belt was only like 9' tall... so now I am trying to decide if I should shorten it on my ships.

France limit the speed to 21kts for BB with VTE techno (17400t République & Démocratie).

The first class to use turbines w"ll be a 24kts scout cruiser LD in 1905, engines installed in 1906, & commissioned mid. 1907.

IMO, Higher speed for BB with VTE is too BP expensive.

I have built my entire fleet around neener neener I'm faster than you from the beginning, so I kind of painted myself into a corner for this class.  I don't have the dreadnought tech yet so I cant build them, and with "Real" BBs coming online that can hit 20 knots I had to step up my speed anyway (not to mention I had to raise my tonnage for the 11/45 over the original 11/40 anyway).  I originally planned to go for 22 knots but your 21s inspired me to push it a bit further than originally planned, that said 23 is about the limit honestly for VTEs.

Just out of curiosity, how reliable and fuel-efficient were the early turbines? Did things improve with oil-spray and later with pure oil-firing?

Tanthalas

Reasonably reliable but very inefficient.  Efficiency went up alot with later developments.

mostly just messing around with em atm, as I don't have the tech yet but kinda liked this one so thought I would go ahead and post it.  Opinions as always are welcome.

Latest incarnation of my "fast" Armoured Frigate reworked as a 24 month build 21 knots Decent if not great armour aBXy layout.  Personaly I am not to sure about the layout, sort of a bigger faster South Carolina (also not sure I need to keep the 6" guns possibly replace them with a whole horde of 4"?), as always opinions welcomed.
