We begin on the picturesque waters of the Danube and Sava rivers of the Balkan peninsula.

Here, with the prospect of riverine operations conducted by Austria-Hungary or Romania, the Ottomans operate a squadron of river gunboats and transports.  The port at Belgrad will now undertake construction of two river monitors to supplement the Danube Squadron.

The 77mm gun is a howitzer, incidentally...

Oh - it'd be three.  Weird...

eltf177

Also Coles/Ericsson turrets? I would think plain deck mounts would be sufficient...

The Rock Doctor

The Austrian monitors I based this on appeared to have full turrets, so I went with it.  The better all-round protection seems useful for situations where there might be fire coming from both sides of a river.

The Rock Doctor

Redone with the right number of mountings.  This freed up some hull strength which I used for misc. weight.

The Ottomans seem to be a little crazy on protected cruisers, with nineteen already in service.  Here come two more - the Baghdad class.  I haven't fully allocated the miscellaneous weight, but the bit below water is torpedos, and the bit above is mostly wireless/flag space.

damn thats alot of PCs, although I can see why you would need so many, as to the ship in question I kinda like it honestly.

I need some for the peripheral areas of the empire.  I'm not convinced I need as many as I have for the main fleet, but can't not build some if I want to avoid a block obsolesence issue.

I'm pencilling in two ACs and three BBs in the near future, so they'll have something to escort in theory...

Edit: To clarify - I sketched out the Ottoman start-up fleet with the old 1:3:5 Capital Ship/Cruiser/DD ratio one hears bandied about, but I think now that the ratio is skewed a bit too much toward the escorts for 1900.  Oh well.

Kaiser Kirk

One area the Italian fleet lacks is these little cruisers, I've got just half as many somewhat larger ones. That was the category sacrificed for BPs.
As for the 1:3:5, perhaps the Ottomans are believers in small craft, or perhaps one of their potential foes has 100+MTBs and so there's a perceived need for escorts...

Overall looks quite servicable.
One question -  do twin 100mm conning towers really make sense? They seem a bit over armored for the foes a vessel that size would choose to tangle with.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

The Rock Doctor

Well, the MTB swarm came after my initial set-up, I think, but that's a valid point.  I'm also not sure whether I'm going to run the Ottomans down the path of "balanced fleet" or "jeune ecole" as the sim progresses.

I think I blindly borrowed the CT set-up from historical German designs, but don't quote me on that.

Decided that the Ottomans would benefit from some armored gunboats.  Notionally, these would be escorting auxiliaries, for the most part.  The armament and armor should be sufficient to deal with a torpedo-boat or two, and probably enough to have some nuisance value against a marauding protected cruiser.

Miscellaneous weight is 5 t up for a short-range wireless, and another 22 t for weight reserve

I'm eyeballing six in 1901.  Yes, I was looking at the Dutch Brinio class when I designed it.  I like those little ships.

I'm eyeballing six in 1901.  Yes, I was looking at the Dutch Brinio class when I designed it.  I like those little ships.

I liked them too :)
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest
