In due course, the Ottomans - like the Germans - figured that the CDS ships weren't really up to spec.  When the Germans ordered the Brandenburg class, the Ottomans paid attention and ordered some (slightly modified) versions for themselves.  The first was built in Germany, the second and third at Constantinople with German assistance.  These probably took a year or two extra to complete.

One of the ships was subsequently lost in an explosion, and I won't be counting that in my starting allowance.

Per the gun table here, those 280mm should remain 35 caliber weapons. If they are meant to be direct copies of the historical 28 cm MRK L/40, as permissible under the historical guns clause AFAIK, then they should have the historical shell weight.

And then the butterflies flap.

Figuring that the Battle of the Yalu doesn't happen as historical, the Ottomans (maybe the Germans, too) don't get really excited about intermediate-caliber rapid-fire guns.  So when the time comes for new battleships, they don't that the German approach of putting 24cm guns as the main caliber.

Instead, they basically stretch their previous class.  This provides space for a uniform main battery, and incremental improvements in most other respects.

All three are built locally, using some imported components (guns, range finders, etc).  I'd wager the third is still building in 1900, and the second might be just finishing as well.

They are indeed meant to be historical, so I guess I'll tweak the shell weights when I do the next round of sims.

Two technical notes.

1) The 1897 battleships need to have 1890 engines. If you move the laydown date up to 1898, they can have 1900 engines. We are going with 3 years after listed date for implementation of techs that happen between 1890 and 1899. Given how you have stated the ships will/could be under construction at sim start, the latter might be a better solution.

2) We are still going to account for torpedoes in Misc weight as SS3 sometimes does not count the weights listed under its torp loadouts. It looks as if all these designs have the necessary weight, so moving the requisite tonnage below the waterline should not cause much, if any change.

Starting to build the smaller units of the navy.  I'm finding that my "modern" fleet costs almost $5 in upkeep, or around 20% of the Ottoman budget, yet I've only spent 202 of 240 BP allocated for fleet purposes.  I have a suspicion I may end up allocating the remaining 38 BP to older stuff - sailing ships, armored frigates, etc., all of which would be in reserve.

Guinness

491 tonnes Light is indeed a big bad destroyer for pre-1900. HMS Havock was only commissioned in 1894 and weighed in at 240t light. The Brits OTL didn't build em that big until the Rivers, completed in 1905. The Germans didn't build them that big until 1905 or 1906 (sorry I can't be more precise, I don't have a better source for German boats than Wikipedia in front of me right now).

You're not wrong.  I was having considerable difficulty successfully simming a smaller type, but think I'm on track for that now. 

Still - this guy has the same dimensions as the German Type 1898 boat, right down to the deep draft.  But even with a BC of just 0.40, the actual displacement is much higher.  Not really sure what, if anything, I can do about that.

But this ain't bad, and the "trials speed" is probably up around the historical class' 27 kts.
