I notice that neither of the "Devastation's" have deck armor. Is this a deliberate design choice?

That would actually be a mistake.  Thank you for noticing it.
These warships are actually my attempt at creating a standardized template for both a shorter-ranged Home Defense vessel as well as a longer range Overseas Service/Imperial vessel.

And here I thought it was an attempt of the British to save weights on their ships. ;D

the 17" belts beg to differ.

Who cheer when solider lads march by
Sneak home and pray that you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Save weight?  This thing is supposed to be a coast defense battleship and it displaces about twice as much as similar type vessels from the same era.

Walter

Well, adding the "coast defense" bit seems more like something the British goverment did to fool the public as well as the opposition into allowing them to spend more on naval ships. Perhaps it was a project to "repair" older ships similar to what the USN did with the Amphitrite class...

To me it is just another battleship so for comparison to "similar type vessels from the same era" I would compare it to other battleships of that time (the 1890s) and looking around at those, I would say that it is not twice as much but more like the same or lighter. The British might be able to fool their own people, but I doubt other nations would be fooled by the "coast defense" tag added to the ship.  :)

....you don't happen to have a seat in Parliament do you?  No?  Good....   :-X

Walter

If I had a seat then there would be massive riots all over the British Empire. ;D

One thing regarding the design, I would raise the freeboard a bit to make the lowered casemate guns a little bit more useful.
