The Pas de Calais/Dover strait are UK and French home waters, even by international decree.

Fat chance for getting such a Decree in N-verse.

The Torres Strait is about 80 miles wide, but is filled with islands which extend the territorial waters (12 miles in NS case).
With which the Habsburgs,  naturally, disagree - 3 miles and not a yard more :)

Ah but the Austrians didnt disagree when China declared 20 miles as territorial waters. They even went ahead and attacked the Swiss and prevented the total defeat of the Chinese navy.

NS does not like double dealers so the Austrians can fume or fight. But any Austrian caught whithin 20 miles of Swiss waters will be shot on sight.

A Free Trade League would be considered favourably by the Hohenzollerns.

The position of the DKB is that territorial waters extend out 3 nautical miles, as has been the custom since such things were thought of. Charging for transit of canals, such as the Colombian one, is one thing, as it was artificially created and passes entirely through the charging nation's territory. Charging for passage through international waters is, however, most unacceptable.

The DKB will not pay a single mark for military or merchant shipping passing through the Pas de Calais, the Torres Strait, or anywhere else. The Reich also reiterates its policy of only recoginising a 3nm territorial waters limit, and will consider itself under no obligiation to refrain from its right to utilise these international waters as it sees fit, when it sees fit.

Furthermore, should the UNK, France and/or New Switzerland continue to make their ridiculous claims of demanding payment for useage of international waters, vessels of these countries utilizing the Afrikan Rift Channel may encounter delays.

I agree. I think the majority of nations will not recognize the Pas de Calais/Dover strait as French/UK territorial waters. To be honest, charging a fee for the use of international waters is clearly extortion on an international level.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion is active here in Navalism as well and that this man is pulling the strings of the UK and France:

Prime Minister of Australia (Wesworld). :D

The Rock Doctor

The Republic of Gran Colombia is intrigued by the notion of collecting revenue on shipping making use of naturally occurring, international waterways.  Should the Franco-Norman project appear to be successful, Gran Colombia will no doubt be commissioning a feasibility study to determine the viability of collecting such fees in the crowded straits between Florida and Cuba (assuming a joint program with the CSA, of course), Cuba and Jamaica, Jamaica and the mainland, and the various passages between the Windward Islands.

The Confederate States of America also favors a Free Trade commission, and echoes the position of Swiss Crnfederation, Rohan, et. al in that it sees the limit of territorial waters at 3 nautical miles from the coastline of a nation. The Confederacy refuses to recognize any claims above and beyond a 3 mile limit.

@ Swampy, Easily solved by sinking a few old ships and making a few artificial "islands", considering that theres only a few navigable passages in the Torres Strait, it wll be simplicity itself to make them territorial waters.

@Borys, But the current goverment continues the policy of: Lets surprise and blast isolated cities filled with inocent civilians, and run before we are caught.

"See? The Austrians did not change their modus operandi with their emperor. They blasted the Azores out of the map as Taipei. I am wondering which republic they will attack next time."
"Your old paranoia again."
"Paranoia? All these monarchies are getting further and further in their plans to eliminate all republics from the scene. Who's the next? Switzerland again? All my predictions came valid."
"That they are out to get you does not mean you are not paranoid."

In a Durban coffee house.

"Crazy Normanns. They decided that international shipping interferes too much with the cross-channel traffic between the Isles and France."
"That's the reason they give? Then why did they decided to ban only military ships to cross the straits? Foreign military traffic going along the Channel is less than 1 percent of the total traffic."
"And those crazy Northerners decided it will hurt their trade a lot."
"Indeed. They cannot escort their vessels with cruisers along. So while merchants ships sail along by the dozen, the occasional cruiser or battleship must go around the isles. So they won't interfere with some tramp steamers."
"That was some rational explanation indeed."
"Apparently the Normann foreign policy makers only recover from one blunder to stumble into the next one."

A nearby French sailor overhears that conversation, and Oh wonder, he can understand it.

Later on.

You know, our corrupt politicians did find a way to tax somebody else than the little Frenchmen.

You're joking, right?

Non, Max I just heard it. The G'vment wants to "tax" all military shipping going trough the Pas de Calais.

They're going to tax themselfs or even equaly stupid, the Ukkers?  The only non French or UK  warships that pass by are the Dutch. I don't see much profit in that.  But I have to admit, to keep the Dutch away, ask money.

Desertfox

A Swiss Merchant overhearing THAT conversation.

"Are you sure he said Dutch? Don't blame the Dutch, hell if they ask money from me Id stay away."

;D
