Should ships I design be central battery / broadside battery ships or are turret ships possible to start? See

I'm building several Devastation-class vessels myself.  I think as long as you dont make an entire fleet of them you are okay.

Turret ships are possible (the UK is looking at building a design based on Devastion) http://www.navalism.org/index.php/topic,6334.msg82671.html#msg82671.

They are, however, limited in that fore and aft turrets tend to preclude useful sails and rigging.  Keep in mind that period steam engines are NOT reliable, so steam-engine only vessels are regarded as limited to coastal operations.

limited turret vessels would be similar to my Monarch-class, Devastation has unlimited turrets because she has no rigging.

Monarch is an example of a broadside turret ship, built that way because she was intended as an oceanic, long-range vessel.  Devastation, on the other hand, didn't mount any sails or rigging because she was intended as a coastal vessel, and could therefore mount her turrets fore and aft.

Sails & rigging are also to economise coal.
Useful to cross Atlantic.

If not, when you arrive, your coal bunkers are nearly empty...

Not cool to do the work...

As I can remember, they will not be installed on new ships in France around 1880 (?)

The RN stopped installing masts and sails in about 1885, while the USN would keep installing masts until 1889.
