Doesn't really matter to me. For the moment I'm using your regiment-based system for my calculation, but if others wish to use one of the other idea, I could change my plan to that.

I'm pretty much in the same boat.  If someone wants a standardized corps arranged I'm willing to do it for them.  I'm just utilizing the system right now to create smaller units more suited to colonial warfare but also larger units for European land wars.

I've just finished my army.  I'll post it when I get home from work.  Stupid Indian Army was gonna take too much time to create so I made it into 3 "presidential armies" aka army corps.

Edited to reflect that the cavalry regiments are 1845 and horse artillery is 1868, which is representative of the "mounted charge" school of thought that dominates the British Army's cavalry formations.  Additionally, a regiment of the newly formed Royal Garrison Artillery has been formed.

Large army I know but India requires pacification.  So does Ireland.  Canada not so much, same with Australia.

If you have any questions, please, feel free to ask.  A more detailed OrBat with unit names and everything will be forthcoming.

Here's what I've come up with for the US Army, but it hasn't been run up against the budget yet so may have shrink before game start.

   3 Cavalry Regiments
(Cost: $0.6125 and 0.072BP each, $12.25 and 1.44 BP total

(Cost: $1.5 and 0.1875 BP each, $9 and 1.125 BP total)

   270 infantry regiments,
   60 artillery regiments,

Man, and I thought I was going to have a huge army.

KWorld

Heh, well, got to garrison the formerly rebellious South, and deal with the not yet pacified American Indian.  Given the size of the Grand Army of the Republic, and a desire to a) make sure the South doesn't rebel again, and b) settle the West, a larger than historical US Army makes sense to me.  The majority of the cavalry's in the West, in Indian country, while the majority of the infantry's in the South, making sure no one gets ideas of ignoring Reconstruction.

Here's mine for the Japanese Army, based on the historical ToE and OOB of the Japanese Army during the 1870-1894 period.

Infantry Corps (1868) x 2:
   Corps HQ

      Division HQ
      3 Infantry Brigade            $1.175   0.14175 BP
         Brigade HQ
         1 Infantry Regiments
         1 Cavalry Regiment
         1 Artillery Regiment
      1 Support Brigade            $0.650   0.18000 BP
         Brigade HQ
         1 Engineer Regiment (1845)
         2 Logistics Regiment (1845)
(Cost: $4.1750 and 0.60525 BP each)
(Cost: $13.025 and 1.81575 BP each, $26.05 and 3.6315 BP total)

Grand Total
18    Infantry Regiments
18    Cavalry Regiments
18    Artillery Regiments
6   Engineer Regiments
12    Logistics Regiments
$26.05 and 3.6315 BP

Here is a question for you all: My understanding of British Army cavalry doctrine is that until the Boer War there was a debate over the role of cavalry.  Some officers preferred the saber or the lance while mounted while a growing minority preferred rifles and carbines and fighting while dismounted.  In 1870, at least in this iteration of history, the British Army's preferred cavalry doctrine is that of mounted charges, so both light and heavy cavalry will be mostly ineffective at longer ranges and need to get to close quarters to be effective.  Ought I use an 1845 technology level to represent this particular failing of the majority of British Army cavalry regiments?  And can I mix 1868 Horse Artillery with 1845 Cavalry regiments in the same unit?

KWorld

Using 1845 cavalry regiments to simulate a force that's more saber/lance focused over one that's moving towards the pistol and the carbine would work nicely, yes.  And you can most definitely mix regiments of different years into the same higher-level unit.

KWorld

For the US Army, I'm pondering going back to 1845 artillery regiments, because the US Army's artillery is still all muzzleloaders at this period.  The smoothbores are mostly replaced by rifled guns (3" ordnance rifles, 4.5" ordnance rifles, 30-pounder and larger Parrotts, etc), but still all muzzleloaders.

I should, I suppose, work up an Austro-Hungarian army, just for everyone to enjoy.

Darman

I modified my original post on the order of battle of the Royal and Imperial Indian Armies to reflect the 1845 cavalry regiments and the addition of a siege artillery regiment.
