Brazil is looking for foreign-made warships to modernize her fleet after the Brazilian-Chilean War.  The Argentinians have ordered a protected cruiser, specifications unknown to the Brazilian government at this time.

To protect against this threat the Brazilians are looking to acquire 2 protected cruisers and an armored cruiser.
The protected cruisers should have a speed of 21+ knots and be able to cruise around to the Chilean coast and back from Brazil without re-coaling (approximately 5800 nm).  Their main armament should be protected against its own shells, 2.5-3.5" deck and skirt.  6" or equivalent main guns.  Preferably 3,-4,500t.
The armored cruiser should have a speed of 20+ knots and be able to cruise to Chile and back (5800nm).  Main armament of between 8" and 9.2" or equivalent, guns armored to protect against own armament.  Belt to protect against main armament minus 2".  Preferably 6,-8,000t.

Hmmmm.  Any length limits?  It doesn't look like Brazil owns any drydocks, so trying to fit into those may not be a concern, but if it is......

Darman

I suppose there arent any length limits.  None of the ABCs own any appreciable drydocks, any major repairs would have to be done overseas or they need to upgrade their existing drydocks.

What level of emphasis is being placed on armor, speed, and armament for the armored cruisers? Are you looking for an IRN style armored cruiser (emphasis on armor and armament, designed to serve in fast battleline squadrons) or a  Regia Marina style speed demon? As of right now the protected cruisers and armored cruiser is Brazil's battleline.  If that helps.

Heh, I think the correct term is that they WILL BE the battleline.  :)

On the Justicia, I have to wonder how all those casemate guns are going to fit in the space between the main turrets, given that they're all currently at deck level.

Nobody

I not sure if you can put that many guns on something rather smaller, but I have some more pressing concerns about those (rule wise):
  • superfiring (open) deck mounts in 1901? For a - what could be considered a major caliber gun no less - I think not. The earliest ship I can think of with something remotely similar are late WW1 destroyers.
  • you can't just leave out the upper or end belt in an armored cruiser! That's classic "all or nothing" thinking, not yet invented. I think you would at least need something like 2 inches or 40-50% or your main armor thickness there.

As of right now the protected cruisers and armored cruiser is Brazil's battleline.  If that helps.

Heh, I think the correct term is that they WILL BE the battleline.  :)

Nobody, is there any way you could replace the 120mm guns on the armored cruiser with the same 150mm guns on the protected cruiser?  If it means the loss of a few 88mm mounts that would be fine.

Tan, no end belt?  And how would it look if you replaced a couple 4" casemate mounts with raised 3" mounts?

Kworld, on the 8" armored cruiser what does it look like if you reduce the range to 6,000nm?
