6" disappearing rifles just seemed a bit small to me.  My understanding is that you want a heavy gun because the mechanism for the disappearing rifles aren't worth maintaining for smaller guns.  Besides, the smaller guns can be loaded and fired much more rapidly, the mechanism slows down their rate of fire much more significantly than a large caliber gun, and it slows down their traverse rate.

6" disappearing rifles are totally in period for US coastal artillery, see http://fortwiki.com/Category:Coast_Battery_Design_6-4-Disappearing for an example of a 6" battery from the period.   The US didn't start "casemate" (to use the N3 term) mounting 6" coast guns until after the development of the M1900 pedestal mount.  Some of the current arsenal may get re-mounted later onto that sort of mount, we shall see.  Another source of info on US coast guns and mounts is http://www.cdsg.org/HDCRdata/armament.htm

Darman

Hey no problem.  Use the 6"s all you want.  The only defenses I have experiences with are the ones around Narragansett Bay.  Talking with some of the guys from the CDSG they had said that the disappearing rifle mounts were far better for larger calibers, such as the twin 10" guns at Fort Adams in the 1890s.

How long of a timeframe do we have for ship construction? Also what rules are we following for ship and infrastructure costs?

That information has been posted for some time.

I was just wondering as it has gone back and forth. Is it five years using cash and BP now (at one point I believe it was 10 years)?

Darman

its 5 years, 10 turns, with cash/BP values given in terms of turns (1/2 year turns).  Thats my understanding at least....

Those are the numbers I've been using as well.  Though the USN will definitely have a number of ships older than 5 years on the roster.

Tanthalas

Thats the numbers I came up with that fit best, with 10 years (20 turns) the numbers just got to unrealistic.

I don't want to think about just how many slips/docks and coast guns I'd have ended up with with 10 years of income.  <shudder>

Spread sheet in progress...
What is the cash for ships?
ex: for a 4000t cruiser?
4BP + 0.4 $ (?)
