So im still playing aorund with my Regina Elena knock off, and coming up with storyline reasons for various things I have decided (or potentialy might decide) to do.  Latest version uses 11/40 instead of 12/35 as its main gun of choice, icreases deck protection by almost an inch and droped 100 tons for minor increase in speed.  Now that the technical stuff is out of the way on to the important information (aka the storyline justification)

In November of 1894 Italian naval designer Vittorio Cuniberti presented the design for what he belived would be the definitive battleship of its era to the Naval Board of the Regina Marina.  His proposed ship would match anything afloat at that time for firepower while being faster than any other battleship in the world and still maintain a reasonable level of protection.  Having heard his proposal the Naval Board as comittees tend to took its dear sweet time coming to a decision, however in October of 1895 finaly decided that the prposed ship was worth building and placed an imediate order for 4 with options on an aditional 4.

The original plan presented by Cuniberti had called for the ship to be armed with 12/35 armstrong guns, however owing to straind relations with the British crown the decision was made to instead arm it with German guns instead, leading to it reciving the Krupp 11/40.

and now the ship

How is it a problem? I have seen several ships that did not have a compleatly armored waterline.

Sneak home and pray that you'll never know

Since I show the ends armored in the pic it is a problem, but only for someone as OCD as me...

I'm guessing there should be a second mount aft?

No other guns at all, not even 3 or 6 pounders?

Just for maneuverability's sake, I'd go with 2 shafts, not 1.

Early designs like this are problems to sim, I agree: I started to try to sim USS Olympia, but it definitely wasn't working.....

Tanthalas

Olympias bigest problem in SS2 or SS3 is the mount rules we use, that and armor coverage... Conways calls for 6X57mm in adition to the pair of 4.7" guns however I had to do away with them to get the necessary misc weight for the Torpedos... thing was only suposed to weigh in at 873 tons standard but that was just totaly non functional (unless I built it under DD rules which we cant just yet)

Another posible version it deleats one of the 4.7" guns for 6 2.25 (57mm) "secondary" guns  and adds a second shaft (although if I deleat the second shaft and run it with one per OTL I can keep the second 4.7)
