It worked?  :o Cool ;D
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when solider lads march by
Sneak home and pray that you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

A slightly later alternative Montana-class AC, delayed to allow the turbine testing of the OTL Chester-class to complete and assuming that Fessenden is successful in persuading the Navy to adopt turbo-electric vs direct-drive turbine propulsion (1906 version has the same assumption for turbo-electric drive, quite possible since Fessenden proposed turbo-electric propulsion to the USN in 1900).

Historically, the USN did not build any small cruisers between the experimental Chester-class of 1905 and the Omaha-class of 1918.  This is a possible intermediate design, for laying down after Chester and Salem proved the superiority of turbine propulsion for high-speed vessels to the USN's satisfaction.  Larger than the Chester-class, it uses a similar, though larger, mixed battery of cannon, and due to it's speed, it mounts it's torpedo tubes above the waterline.  The forward 6" mount is mounted on a raised platform to allow low-angle fire over the bow.

A design based closely on the OTL USS Roe, with 3 4" guns replacing the original 5 3" guns (the USN is more likely to be fighting other destroyers than torpedo boats, so the 3" guns don't really hit hard enough).  Something that's interesting about this design is that the historical design must have been EXTREMELY slender: to get the displacement down to the historical 742 tons normal they were rated at, you have to use a Cb of .345 with the historical dimensions (retrieved from here: http://destroyerhistory.org/early/pauldingclass/).  The OTL Smith class, which preceded the Pauldings, were even narrower: on the same dimensions, they displaced only 700 tons.

Then shouldn't they be in the same place "on centreline ends, evenly spread"?
What happens if you use "Coles/Ericsson turret mounts" for the turrets on top the turrets instead of deck mounts?

Yes, the 8" guns should be centerline ends, fixed.

Switching to Coles/Ericsson turret mounts reduces strength by .01.  In this case, I'd argue that it's not worth it, since the mount has no independent traverse: it traverses as the 13" turret traverses.
