The Affiliation

This will be for the designs that I actually intend to use for my nation.
But first, a brief summary of my nation:

The Affiliation is a loose confederation of city-states that banded together in the early history of the world... shortly after the high technology of the Old Ones died off. As steel disappeared, while iron and bronze were the height of metallurgical technology, these cities came together for mutual defense against a common enemy. A landed aristocracy developed, with smaller freeholders and serfs who worked the land, and a few skilled craftsmen supported them. As technologies like firearms and cannon were rediscovered, the aristocracy coddled the few craftsmen who could create them... leading to an institution of warriors trained in the use of the guns. These 'Gunslingers' formed an elite core to a conscript military (think knights wearing primitive firearms) trained mostly in the use of bows and crossbows.
A common faith kept the Affiliation together- one from Earth-That-Was- and formed the core of their war with a group of opposing tribes. Eventually, a war of extermination was waged against the enemies of the Faith... ending in a massacre of all the members of the enemy tribes "who were old enough to remember the 'face of their father'." This was more than a thousand years ago, during the time of a king known only as 'the Eld.'
Though there were kings and princes ruling the cities of the Affiliation, they only existed through the support of the Gunslingers (much as the Emperor of Japan ruled only by the sufferance of the samurai warlords who supported him). Eventually the Gunslingers deposed this 'royalty in name only,' becoming a de facto law unto themselves. They have maintained this status unchallenged for at least 500 years... it is merely accepted as 'The Way Things Have Always Been.' A central council of the most respected Gunslingers rules with absolute power- a benevolent oligarchy which consists of 13 companions.

Here are the true origins of the Affiliation- lost to the fall of technology and the central computers of the massive ship that brought humans to the world:

The people of the Affiliation are largely from North America- generally the Southeast, Southwest and Mid-West of that continent. They speak a very divergent dialect of American English which is a mish-mash of the slang of those regions, perverted by time. The most powerful of the people of the area must have had romantic inclinations towards the American 'Old West' for the culture of the Affiliation broadly resembles that time period, with feudal elements working their way into the mix. A faith resembling Christianity in basic form is universal among the Affiliation, though time and the evolution of language has affected the way that the Bible is interpreted.

The average citizen of the Affiliation has medium to light skin, with hair colors running the gambit from dark, coarse black to red and fine blonde. Most men are between 5'6" and 5'10" and women are between 5' and 5'5"; this is most likely attributed to dietary factors, because the Gunslingers and the larger landowners are sometimes significantly taller- up to 6'5" for men and 5'10" for women. There are occasionally 'goliaths' of great size and 'miges' of small stature; though they are occasionally objects of ridicule or awe, they are viewed as equally capable and some trades intentionally seem them out to Printice.
Children are considered 'of age' at 16 for both males and females; at this age, schooling ends for all but the most powerful. Most subjects of the Affiliation become manual laborers, farmers or soldiers at this point. The children of the rich and powerful are often 'Printiced' to tradesmen and professionals at this age- the closest thing to 'university' that exists in the Affiliation. Upon reaching approximately 20-25 (depending on the skills they learn), these Printices become Passed Masters and take their place among the elite of society... they are immensely powerful, but they still lack any opportunity to rule.

The Gunslingers alone are different. From the time they are old enough to handle a weapon, they are taught to "Draw the Bow and Speak the Truth." They receive no schooling in the traditional sense, their days instead being spent learning religion, science, history, law and how to handle every weapon known to man. This training is all-consuming; a Printice Gunslinger has little time for the mundane life of a regular child. Upon reaching 16, a Printice Gunslinger challenges his teacher in a ceremony known simply as 'the Duel.' He comes to the site of the ritual with one weapon of his choice- but never a gun- and faces his teacher in single combat. Those who loose the duel are denied their family's inheritance, and generally become priests or soldiers of fortune (if they survive the Duel) and some even commit suicide after failing (either immediately or later in life).
Those who defeat their teachers are afforded the right to call themselves by the name of their father's House and the right to 'Wear the Iron.' Gunslingers are given special firearms made by the craftsmen of their city upon their success, the style of which varies somewhat from town to town, but generally are revolvers. A Gunslinger has an almost samurai-like right to 'execute and excuse'- he may, if the victim is not a Gunslinger, kill first... then explain the reasoning behind the act. He also becomes something of an 'instant captain' in the Affiliation military, taking command of a small body of conscript troops.
On rarest of occasion, a commoner might prove himself worthy of adoption by a Gunslinger 'House'- if this happens, he is given a status similar to that of a squire of old and his son will be entitled to take training as a Prentice Gunslinger... with the chance to take the House name as his own if he succeeds in the Duel.

Affiliation law, due to the uniqueness of the Gunslinger's status, is very Hammurabic in nature. The list of capital offenses is long and varied- murder, rape, child molestation, serious assault, serious thefts, and treason are all capital offenses... as are some seemingly mundane offenses like drunk driving which results in injury or perjury in a court of law. Crimes that are not capital often have disproportionately severe sentences; any imprisonment results in hard labor and branding a minor criminal is commonplace. Only a Gunslinger may preside over a court, and for minor offenses a court may be called at any time or place the Gunslinger finds convenient. Two reputable men (not bearing the brand of a criminal) are sufficient to convict, and a jury trial is only afforded to Gunslingers.

So 'ere's to you, Fuzzy-Wuzzy, at your 'ome in old Baghdad;
You're a pore benighted 'eathen but a first-class fightin' man;
We gives you your certificate, an' if you want it signed
We'll come an' 'ave a romp with you whenever you're inclined.
