Also, I think all of the broadside-mount guns, given how the hull's laid out, would have to be mounted "low", because they're all below the freeboard deck that SS has been told about.   If you want the guns above the freeboard deck, you'd need to lower the freeboard deck and use "upper belt" armor to form your protected battery.

I've always had trouble figuring that bit out.  But it makes sense.  I'll go back and decrease deck armor by a third, increase speed as high as i can get it, and lower my guns.

IMO, a battery battleship, in our game use casemate guns

If you want to have a useful field of fire, yes, I agree.

Hull-wise, this seems to be the same design as before, though it does have a much larger engine and hence some chance of closing on it's opponents.

Darman

Yes that was the idea.  Sorry, apparently I didn't write up a description of the alterations.  I'm working on improving the ship because it is going to be one of the designs that Corporate Sector designers are working towards.  My second one is basically the same except with casemated main battery.  I'm also planning an escort cruiser armed with anti-avian and anti-sea creature weaponry.  There will be a few, mainly used by corporations who do a lot of exploring in the "wilder" parts of the oceans.

Darman

Escort Cruiser
I used an armored deck and belt, its a pre-start model.  They wanted the armor because the ship is designed as an escort vessel for exploration expeditions to dangerous parts of the world.  As such it possesses 4 steam launches for rescue and landing operations.

Okay so actually this ship is illegal... no cruiser or capital ship before 1910 can fire more than 6 turrets on a single broadside.  ooops.... I have 7.  I'd like to ask a second opinion on my interpretation of the rules and if I'm right its really no big deal I'll remove 2 guns.

I read these as being deck mounts, and therfore legal. Turreted guns and mounts with hoists are the types of mounts which that rule applies to.

Gotcha.  I forgot there is a distinction between a "deck mount w/shields" and a "turret".

Deck mounts are kosher- virtually every cruiser from the 1880's till 1920 was laid out like yours. ;)

Similar to my first light cruiser attempt, armor is even worse though. Its 20% bigger but much better armed and faster. Also more versatile.
Your light guns don't add up: 6x2+4x1 is not 20.

Aren't the steam launches at bit too small at 3 tons? Can you sim them as well?

Good catch!  thanks I meant to make that 6x2 and 4x2, apparently forgot to make it a twin.

QuoteAren't the steam launches at bit too small at 3 tons? Can you sim them as well?
I used the values given in the rules for steam launches, life boats, etc.  I believe its under "Miscellaneous Weights"

The cruiser is lightly armored because its not intended for a combat role per se.  It was designed to fight off the local oceanic and avian fauna.  Thus being on the receiving end of enemy salvos was never part of its job description

Here is a common search and rescue vessel, carries 4 steam launches and 4 large lifeboats (in case she herself suffers an accident with passengers onboard).

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
     234 lbs / 106 Kg = 4.5 x 4.7 " / 119 mm shells or 0.2 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 0.95

         - Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.34
   Seaboat quality  (Average = 1.00): 1.21

Hull form characteristics:
Hull has low forecastle, low quarterdeck ,
a normal bow and a round stern
   Block coefficient (normal/deep): 0.650 / 0.655
   Length to Beam Ratio: 6.25 : 1

   Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 0.00 degrees
   Stern overhang: 0.00 ft / 0.00 m
Freeboard (% = length of deck as a percentage of waterline length):
            Fore end,    Aft end

      - Average freeboard:      9.00 ft / 2.74 m
Ship tends to be wet forward

Ship space, strength and comments:
   Space   - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 150.3 %
      - Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 52.1 %

So 'ere's to you, Fuzzy-Wuzzy, at your 'ome in old Baghdad;
You're a pore benighted 'eathen but a first-class fightin' man;
We gives you your certificate, an' if you want it signed
We'll come an' 'ave a romp with you whenever you're inclined.
