Increasing range increases subdivision as well- the fuel tanks are sealed on all sides and aren't likely to flood the interior of the ship unless it is a 'critical hit.'

That's why the survivability figure is a pretty good indicator of survivability; that's also why I'll be using it to determine how survivable our ships are.

Coal bunkers are NOT sealed, though, there are coal scuttles that have to be accessible to get the coal out of them.  As noted in the NavWeaps article on Torpedo Defense Systems (http://navweaps.com/index_tech/tech-047.htm), these did not tend to survive hits in a closed state.

SpringSharp, in her less than perfect algorithms, doesn't differentiate. ;) Coal bunkers fared fairly well against projectile hits; as you note, it was torpedo strikes where they suffered. For shell hits, ships with coal bunkers actually preformed better than the more modern oil-fired ships.

Be very, very aware that any ship with coal firing will have a little drawback called Poor Subdivision in the Victory at Sea system... which doubles not just damage from torpedoes, but doubles the severity of flooding as well.

I assure you, concerns like these are being addressed 'behind the curtain.'
You might not see the results until a ship takes a hit... but you'll know they are there when the battle reports come out- or if you ask about something specifically, like you just did.

12" casemates would be more a hindrance than anything else.

1.) They would likely only fire about once every 3rd turn or so.
2.) They would also be very, very slow to traverse.
3.) you couldn't really armor them heavily enough... they would be very bad about blowing the ship up.

It is theoretically within the rules, and I would probably allow something like that to be built... if only to see how many turns it took before it exploded. ;)

Yeah, I don't think it's a very viable design either, so far the better BBs I've seen have been 15,000 tons or smaller, the only good 20,000 ton design I've come up with is the "BC" design I already posted.  That one has potential.

And, at the other end of the scale, a small but useful little fellow.....

Ok... I know we are discussing this in another place, but I have to say it here as well:
Seeing this design makes me lean towards limiting these kinds of ships till much later.

Something about every ship in the world turning into an A-Q-Y layout ship with twin turrets disgusts me on a very fundamental level. While I prefer to allow everyone the maximum flexibility to design what they want, I refuse to have every ship in every fleet look exactly alike... and to have every ship from the smallest cruiser to the biggest battleship have the same identical A-Q-Y layout.

This isn't anything against you, but it is saying that A-Q-Y is starting to become a problem for creative shipbuilding.

KWorld,
Specifically about this ship- how long does SS say that the armor belt has to be to cover the machinery and magazine, and how far do the vital spaces extend (distance between the end of the fo'c'sle and the start of the quarterdeck)? I'm just curious, as I am trying to keep my machinery/magazines confined to within the vital spaces, and notice that it isn't quite working.

On this ship, SS3.3 is reporting that I need 114.68 meters of belt armor to protect the machinery & magazine spaces.  That means that the machinery & magazine spaces extend well into the forecastle & quarterdeck regions, which isn't unusual in SS ship designs that are fast for their era.  SS wants to put all the machinery & magazine spaces below the waterline, and will displace other things to do it.

OK, I was wondering if everyone had this problem or just me.
DAMN, do we need that engine slider working!

Looking at it, I probably won't be building any C06Ts, they're too big for the light cruiser role in the Columbiad Republic Navy.  The Admirals Board is hard-pressed to support the building of a ship whose main armament is a 15cm gun that displaces almost 6000 tons.  This should not be read to say that the board wouldn't support a similar vessel of smaller dimensions, however.

A ship along the lines of IJN Satsuma, though modified to fit CRN guns.  I'm not keen on all the hull casemates, but with all the 25cm turrets cluttering the sides, there's no other place to put the anti-torpedo boat battery.
