What do you think of these settings?

Just testing the water to see who might be interested in which scneario.  To date, the discussion's been on the Deathworld option, but a less extreme "Retrogressed Colony" could be less difficult to set up.

You can vote twice.  Vote once for a "Deathworld" option and once for a "Retrogressed" option.

Deathworld:  People live in largely self-contained coastal and in-water cities because land is infested with nasty critters.  City-related tech is advanced, but previously non-essential skills - such as military stuff - had been lost.  With nationalism/resource scarcity/boredom now causing tension, war-making skills and techniques are being rebuilt from ancient texts on WW1 and WW2.  Hindsightedness almost inevitable.

Retrogressed:  Colonies were established on a generally inhabitable world but could not be sustained at "modern" tech.  They regressed back to the steam age as they established themselves, and have now started rebuilding into the industrial age.  Demand for commodities, space, and glory drives militarism and the development of tech, mostly from scratch.  Less room for hindsightedness.

I suspect that my take on the setting has always more or less split the difference between the two options - a deathworld, yes, but one just mild enough that truly devoted or desperate settlers can carve out and hold enclaves against the native life, even if only by abandoning nearly everything else. So, hundreds of years ago, people were keeping the native life back from stone walls with machetes and black powder - and now there are enough people to start cracking open the few books that have survived and doing things better.

I voted Deathworld just because of the limiting factors that could result- which would give us a world that would create the perfect environment for a long-lasting dreadnought navy.

Either setting works for me!

You're a pore benighted 'eathen but a first-class fightin' man;
We gives you your certificate, an' if you want it signed
We'll come an' 'ave a romp with you whenever you're inclined.

I choose Deathworld -
Play or don't play , that depend of the clear, simple & logical rules.

I'm working on writing up some rules now.  Clear and simple is the objective.
